How on earth do I even begin to try photographing Lightning?

With Digicam delays ive got to click at least a second before the flash, and lasting just a fraction, I simply have no hope in the world of pre-guessing that kind of accuracy.

I know location is easy to pinpoint, but I guess I need some kind of light sensor trigger device?

I just loving chasing lightning (bout the most exciting weather here int he UK........) so im now up for trying to capture it too :D

Kill the Flash
Make the shutter stay open for about a minute

job done

I tried with a digital one (max shutter time was 4secs) and the results were pap.

Dont think holding shutter open for a minute will do you any good. The sensor will be saturated I would have thought if lightening were to strike.

You need a better camera with quicker response times. You will then be able to trigger the camera quickly enough and tell the shutter to stay open just long enough to capture the streaking effect.

Still a hard subject to capture though!!

wait until a storm starts near your house at night and you can see forked lightning.

this is the general gist of things for DSLRs

set camera on tripod.

select aperture priority mode - Av on Canon.

set to lowest ISO, ie ISO100.

set to smallest aperture ie f32.

the camera now knows it needs a lot of light to expose the shot properly, as f32 and ISO100 will let very little light in - you may find it sets a shutter speed of a minute or something, this is what you need.

press the shutter button and trial and error!
