Mathias

Some may know i've had a few projects that have either been uncompleted or broken for parts. I've had some stick from people for just spending money and never using them!
Well this is my last saxo that i will own. I've always wanted this car since i joined the site so when it came up for sale i had to have it!
I'll let the pictures do the talking...... all the credit goes to lewis and pauly dixon for whats been done so far to be honest however i plan to finish the car to the same standard!
Plans for the car involve:
FINISH THE CAR ASAP WITH SPENDING THE MINIMUM AMMOUNT OF MONEY TO USE IT AS QUICLKY AS POSSIBLE!!
car came with a jp4 engine so i've stripped it tonight to change over to j4 head components tomorrow
few pictures

have considered that option :)
however i am limited to budget etc currently. i am a track novice who wants to start somewhere and quickly.
if i enjoy it out there which i think i will then that may be a future option. however im fed up of spending money and endless amounts of time with no fun and end result. I see what your saying and would love to do that in the future however ill be happy with 160-170 at the flywheel when mapped with current spec

Well i hadn't planned to go..... not in the car anyway.
However my girlfriend informed me last night that she has bought 2 x tickets, track time and a hotel the night before as its a 4 hour drive for us!
so i'd better pull my finger out as i also want to put some miles on it before we go!!

cant fit those with the jp4 head gav due to clearance. could fit a larger headgasket but obviously this will lower the compression
have bought some 705's for the jp4 engine.

Always liked this car could of had this instead of building mine own, but rather my own project myself, glad it's gone to you as i know you will look after it;) as gav said go for 743 catcam camshafts supposed to be better than 708's and produce more power. Look forward to more progress on this:) edit just seen your going to use 705's as have a jp4 head, can't you convert to j4 bits to run j4 cams or not?

im going to convert to j4 parts in the head anyway, however after looking into it (as far as im aware) even after doing that then fitting 708's (for j4) i'll still have issues with valve clearance. It will be too close for comfort

As much as i'd love sandy to map it mate, there is somebody local to me who deals with dta regularly so ill use them. Also think sandy is uber busy currently!
RIght i managed to strip the head down today and start replacing the jp4 parts with j4 items. am i right in saying its the springs, followers, valve caps and collets that need to be changed over?
Also when i removed the plugs i found this:
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll271/WIDE-VTR-TURBO/saxo/001.jpg
The 2 plugs on the right were closest the thermostat housing, they were no tighter to remove however as you can see they have a rust build up. its a very low mileage jp4 engine, so has probably been liable to water ingress at some point? or do you think this is something to worry about?
Lewisimo
19th April 2012, 08:48
No idea what that is dude^ prob best to get the geeks to advise you on that.
Just glad the car will finally see the road, my poor old Saxo! :( He's called 'Samuel' by the way! ;)
Mathias
19th April 2012, 09:44
I've asked in work and think it's nothing to worry about. Will have been standing sonewhere at some point and had water ingress.
All parts now changed over to j4, just waiting for head gasket and cams and the head can go back on. Then just paint the gearbox and engine can go in!!
I thought it was called Samuel Lewis as there is a some masking tape on the underside of the roof with a message on saying Samuel :)

Well all the 3 hour sessions are sold out..... plus cant really leave the mrs on her own for 3 hours! haha! and it will be my first real proper time on track so only a 15 minute slot, however hoping that there may be some other slots flying around on the day or something.....
EDIT - i see they've now launced another 8 slots for 3 hour open pit.... think i'll have to leave it though :(
Right got round to wrapping the manifold tonight, few pics of it painted up and wrapped :)

Painted gearbox today, fitted j4 sump to jp4 engine. Went to fit the j4 timing belt setup however I have a few queries. Pics tomorrow to explain....
Mathias
21st April 2012, 22:18
Right basically this is the query, you can sew here the jp4 tensioner fitted and the new (to be fitted? J4 tensioner. When you remove the jp4 tensioner, your left with a threaded stud that the jp4 tensioner slides on to. However when you then go to fit the j4 tensioner the hole shown in the centre of the j4 tensioner is too large for the stud which comes out of the block.......
Anyone know what to do?
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll271/WIDE-VTR-TURBO/78665510.jpg
As you can see the roller shown here looks like it will fit spot on:

jeffchiz
22nd April 2012, 08:15
Aren't the jp4 tensioners self tensioning and the j4 ones have to be tensioned manually? I might be completely wrong here but ill check with my housemate when he gets out of bed, that might be why they're different
jeffchiz
22nd April 2012, 08:28
Just checked with my housemate and jp4 tensioners arent a proper self tensioning system like you get on audis, but apparantly they are spring loaded, whereas the j4 ones aren't
Mathias
22nd April 2012, 08:30
Yes mate they are self tensioning, so jp4 needs to be changed as less reliable and not as strong at high revs apparently
Think I've sorted the issue now, I need a shaft that threads into the side of the block then the j4 tensioner slides on and bolts into place
jeffchiz

22nd April 2012, 16:21
Managed to get the head all cleaned up today. Fitted inlet and exhaust studs. Gave the gearbox a second coat of paint. Fitted alternator, fitted rear engine mount bracket and intermediate driveshaft carrier.
Also started making a mounting bracket for my oil catch tank, made a base up for it, however won't be finished until the engine is in as I need to know which height to make it.
Cams and head gasket should be here mid week so I'm hoping to get the engine in by this time next week, then I can refit all the wiring etc. Busy week ahead!
Mathias
22nd April 2012, 18:08
Also started to refit the interior wiring and front section of exterior loom. just needs securing in place with some more p-clips etc :D
Once the interior loom is in i'll get the engine back in then fit the rest of exterior wiring and engine wiring harness and find somewhere to mount the dta :)

Head gasket arrived today, so fitted the head tonight :) just waiting on cams from kam racing hopefully tomorrow. Then they can be fitted, engine timed, gearbox and clutch fitted. Then engine and transmission refitted into shell.
Continued fitting interior wiring loom, rebuilt the interior fuse box and relays back up and fitted behind dashboard.
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll271/WIDE-VTR-TURBO/d5b3ef3d.jpg
The interior loom was also sent off to sandy brown as well as the engine harness, it's now all labelled up and nice and tidy :)

Been waiting for cams, had an email today to say they'd be here tomorrow, but no-one is home tomorrow :( typical! Going to see if I can change address to my works address but doubt they'll let me change now?!
If I can get them tomorrow then I'll get the head built up with cams in and covers on, get the engine timed up, clutch and gearbox on. Then a few bits to fit before engine goes in :D

Spent the afternoon today fitting the majority of the satchshift setup.... followed the rallye register guide by sandy - great guide!
started off by measuring where the upper gear rod needed to go through the bulkhead.
drilled a pilot hole and then got the hole saw out....
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll271/WIDE-VTR-TURBO/004-20.jpg

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll271/WIDE-VTR-TURBO/007-15.jpg
drilled the 4 holes for the interior gaiter for the upper gear rod
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll271/WIDE-VTR-TURBO/011-12.jpg
rear 12mm hole drilled for base plate, and pilot hole drilled for the main gear shifter:
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll271/WIDE-VTR-TURBO/008-12.jpg
where the exterior braided brake lines in the engine bay had been fitted the satchshift pivot wanted to mount so needed to remove them and will re-route tomorrow. fitted the exterior pivot assembly

had to cut the wishbone strengthening arms as they fouled the satchshift monunt
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll271/WIDE-VTR-TURBO/010-6.jpg
left the interior looking like this, the only thing to do now is cut the lower section of dash and fit the under side mechanism in the exhaust tunnel too :)

Thanks :) yes 705's that have been fitted
Why you ask mate?
Mathias
7th May 2012, 17:22
finished fitting satchshift, changed the front braided brake line setup so it wouldnt foul the satchshift. Fitted the under-car section of the shifter. Just need to loctite and tighten everything up :)
Then spent 2-3 hours this afternoon under-sealing and painitng the rear arches and boot floor. There isnt one patch or section of rust on the underside. However wanted to give it some protection and it also looks great against the black paintwork.
No pictures today unfortunately as my phone was playing up. There will be some pictures of engine and together and also fitted in the bay this week :D

Right after getting the engine in yesterday night, have now realised the scuttle panel will need to be cut to give clearance for the itg filter with 90mm trumpets!
Have had a think, and have 2 options, either cut a large section out including the upper lip of the scuttle. Or try and cut the correct sized hole with a template of the filter. Making sure I profile this shape when I cut into the scuttle?!
Not sure which one to go with really? Any advice/opinions?
unreal106

The second option it more thought out and would look better on this car spend a little effort double checking then get cutting

Agree with Tom ^^
If you really HAVE to cut tw scuttle then cut away as little as possible IMHO :)
AlexB
12th May 2012, 08:03
that part of the scuttle isnt structural so removing all of its not a problem (ollys car for example)
i put a hole the size of my trumpets in mine it looks tidier imo

Well I can run the 90mm trumpets without an itg filter and won't have to cut anything?! Would you recommend not using a filter though?

i dont run a filter
its a rear facing engine so.large debris your struggle to suck in
dust ect will get in and over time youll need to redo the valve seats but tbh itll take years for that to get that bad

Id filter it and cut rounded corner letterbox shape in the scuttle - best to fit a lhd wiper setup if you do this (speaking from experience)

I have a lhd wiper setup coming courtesy of Lewis as the shell was already modified for it.
So you mean leave the upper lip, then cut a letter box rectangle shape out And make the corners a nice rounded shape? Do you have any pictures of what you did to yours?

Picture of engine now in....

Then the area that needs cutting, you can see 3 holes that have previously been cut by Lewis to air airflow, going to hopefully decide how to cut this tomorrow!

most just remove the full section in a rectangle shape where the trumpets/filter will sit
from what ive seen anyway :y:

Awesome, id definitely fit the lhd setup - fit the bodies to check, but you might be able to just join the 2 out circles (effectively removing the centre circle) and that'll give you the clearence you need. Otherwise you effectively just need to do that but extend the two outer circles outward to make the sausage cutout wider to fit the filter in it.
I cut the whole area out of the scuttle as due to the angle of the bodies, the top part of the scuttle had to come off to allow me to even fit the filter without it being all squashed against the top part of the scuttle.
Hope the above makes sense.
Mathias
12th May 2012, 21:31
Thanks ross think that's the best option. I'll join the 3 circles plus a little more and go from there!

Personally, I would ALWAYS run a filter. So in that case cut the scuttle in a letter box shape and keep the top lip of the scuttle so it looks standard, if you don't like it cut you can always do a box section similar to mine

I'm with JP. Always run a filter. Won't effect the performance as its a properly spec'd one! And it's the dust and stuff that does damage!
Also, lad on 106oc has done this, and I think it's a tidy job! Post #229

Well after cutting a letter box shaped hole out of the scuttle. i can confirm that the itg filter will not fit :(
The upper lip that is at the top of the scuttle will now be cut this afternoon and something made up - pretty much as above!!
Thanks rich! had seen that before a while back and thought it looked neat! will see what it looks like once ive cut mine and fitted the filter!

Right pictureless update!
Having removed the fuel tank, i needed a couple of new fittings from earls, and some new hose to connect from the rear bulkhead fittings to the fuel pump.
Also ordered some fittings from them to hopefully sort out my fuel pressure regulator setup. Some coolant hose arrived today to make up a hose from the back of the block to the thermostat housing as the heater matrix is no longer fitted :)
so tomorrow night should see the refit of the tank with new rear fittings and lines. the completion of the fpr setup. and also finishing the scuttle modifications.
then interior wiring in properly and carbon panels fitting. fitting engine wiring loom and battery cables too. interior back in, with a few modifications. then a spanner check. fill with fluids and book mapping!!

oh i need to sort a throttle cable too
taking it locally to be mapped, and was told not to run it as the dta software has a ford zetec/duratec base map so will make sure it starts a few times and then get it on the trailer to be mapped

Good and bad news today! called where I initially was going to bring the car this week to be mapped, but the rolling road has broken and won't be fixed for a few months :(
Quick call to dta to find out who was my closest and recommended agent and a phone call later and it's now booked in for the 11th June! Cutting it very fine for fcs though!
Means I can get all the finishing touches done before mapping, but then only have 2-3 days to sort an mot and put some miles on it to check for leaks etc!!
Also these arrived today.... Some team dynamics 7j wide with some good condition 888's. Unsure whether to risk driving 4-5 hours to fcs with them though?! Think it's a risk!

As Alex said I've also driven from leicester to the rig and back on r888's, no problem as long as they are legal. If they aren't stick them in the boot and get some road tyres to get you to fcs and back and stick the r888's for the track
Mathias
30th May 2012, 11:16
Thanks Josh, and Alex :)
They are legal, may drive up with them on and no other wheels. Only have 15 minutes on track so it's not a big deal.
Have the compomotives with new Yokohama road tyres so may just drive up there with them and just use them on track.

After putting new fluids in. Got all ready to start it up to make sure all was good. Flat battery!! So charged the battery, and ignition on....... Fuel pump won't prime. Checked I hadn't done something stupid, all earths connected and everything plugged in......
Getting late so I left it, thinking maybe the fuel pump is faulty as it has been standing for 5 years? Got another pump here with a walboro 255 in so I'll change it for that tomorrow and see what happens.
Mathias
2nd June 2012, 09:00

Unsure of where to go now, have checked all earths which are good too!

2nd June 2012, 09:56
Run a power feed from one of the unused fuses to the pump, easy :) or directly from the battery, or from one of the ignition wires, so that when your ignition is on your fuel pump will prime
Trace the pump live wire back and check the continuity of the cable!
There is a fuse for the pump in the bay IIRC, will double check some diagrams I have when I get home!
Mathias
2nd June 2012, 11:12
I'll do that when I get home later, there is no engine fuse box now as there was a custom loom made up.
I've checked the fuses under the dash and all seems ok.

Mathias
3rd June 2012, 15:05
Right, engine now turning over but won't fire. But after asking sandy it won't fire until it's mapped as the default map has the wrong trigger pattern for Peugeot/citroen

Less than a week till Donnington and the car looks like this!
Went into the bodyshop saturday to have the a few sections at the rear painted which had been filled. The paint then started to peel in large sections which meant a small job turned into a large one! always the same!
got the car back toninght as i have mapping booked for wednesday with sandy. he VERY
a spare dta that he put a base map on so i could check for leaks etc before going up. However i've plugged that in and turn ignition on.... fuel pump primes then cuts out as it should. Then i turn it over, however it doesnt fire! After removing one of the fuel lines in the bay its apparent its not getting fuel!
Does this mean the pump is faulty? it primes, however the engine is not getting fuel. i dont think i've refitted the pump incorrectly back into the tank as there was only one way it would fit?!
Starting to think i wont be at donnigton this weekend let alone mapping!!

when i turn the ignition on, the fuel pump primes for around 5 seconds as its supposed to, then clicks off. then i turn the engine over and it wont fire. however when i check if there is any fuel at the fuel rail there is nothing at all!

Put a small pipe in the outlet to a bottle and see if your getting anything direct from the pump.. Could be a blockage in the line
tweeqd
12th June 2012, 21:28
might sound stupid but is there any fuel in the tank?
Mathias
12th June 2012, 21:29
tried that earlier, straight from pump - to eliminate a blockage - nothing coming straight from pump
Mathias

between 15-20 litres of v-power :y:
showing 1/4 tank
i'm guessing thats enough?

So is the pump defo priming? You say you can hear it, I hear something Everytime I flick my ignition, it's not the pump
Try the tube again with a live straight to the battery, if the pump is working, it should fill the bottle, if not then your not getting power to the pump and the noise your hearing is something else
Mathias
12th June 2012, 22:04
no its definately the pump mate.... can hear it clear as day, and also if you put your hand on it when turning ignition on then you can feel it also!

12th June 2012, 22:18
Strange, i checked mine for fuel earlier (to check which was the feed and which was the return fuel pipe) and i had fuel pissing out within 2-3 seconds of the pump priming lol
Mathias
12th June 2012, 22:31
Haha! That's exactly what should be happening with mine :(
Mathias
12th June 2012, 23:26
Could it be a split / broken breather or vacuum line for the tank building up pressure and starving the pump?
SunderZ
12th June 2012, 23:40
have you had the pump out of the tank..check the little filter bag on the pick-up aint full of crap or damaged?? yeah you can hear it running but.. start from point 1. the fuel in the tank and where it should travel... throughout the pick up into the pump... bla bla bla... track it's route.
not the most helpful comments but take a step back and start with the basics i find that a good start :)
hope you get it sorted!
love the car too.

Have removed the pump and changed for several others. The one that's fitted now has only covered 50 miles max so is like new
Gandi699
13th June 2012, 00:57
Ghetto as it sounds I'd be inclined to remove the pump from the tank and try it pumping from a container of petrol. Obviously being extremely careful mind you

Have you touched the wiring for the fuel pump?
You haven't by any chance got to polarity of the pump the wrong way round?
I've got a body loom in my living room at the moment, check which pin your feed is on and I'll check mine if you like?
Just a thought? Trying to think outside the box a little

Fuel pump relay? Long shot, I know. (Hell, I might be completely wrong).

The interior loom was tidied up by a previous owner, out of the 5 pins on the fuel pump multi plug, I have one blue, one pink, and two green and yellow. (one is missing/blank - pin 3.)
The two green and yellow wires are in positions 1 and 2, with the blue wire in position 4 and then pink wire in position 5 on the multi plug.
Hope this makes sense?
I believe the blue wire is the feed wire

Gutting for you mate. Could you still not take to sandy and he may be able to see what up with it within a hour or so? Then can still get the mapping done once its running.
Ross
13th June 2012, 08:47
does the pump run in your hand? IE, fill a washing up bowl with fuel, two pipes one in, one out, does it churn through fuel? That eliminates the pump. Next is the breather as discussed.
Beaniemoo
13th June 2012, 08:49
Yeah the wiring colours are right, just check using a multimeter that your feed is coming in on the blue.
Failing that, as Jsdvtr said, can you not ask sandy politely if he'll have a look at it before mapping?
Mathias
13th June 2012, 08:54
Already checked with a multimeter too :(
Really strange one!!
Well we are around 6 hours on a trailer away from sandy so 12 hour round trip, think it would have taken 3-4 hours this afternoon to map it, so any extra time isn't really an option. Also have a track day on the 21st i probably won't make either!!

13th June 2012, 08:58
take the fuel filler cap off and try again, if it works its a breather issue
send 12v straight from the battery to the pump, if it works its a wiring issue
Ross' suggestion of doing it in washing up bowl is a good shout, but it does sound like wiring, especially if its the wrong polarity and its just churning fuel in the tank!

Haven't read the whole thead/issue. But when mine wouldn't start i checked fuel over etc didn't think it was getting any turned out to be the crank sensor in the end.

no fuel is coming out the fuel line. Not engine related.

Right thought i'd update this....fuel now cming through when pump primes, fault WAS down to polarity of wiring. Managed to get the car into work a few days ago, just to do a few jobs that needed the car on a lift really. hoping to get that lot done by middle of the week and then i can get it down to have the paint finished off, and up to sandy to be mapped. few pics in work

Finally got the car started today:)
couldnt understand why there was no spark, after a quick question to sandy it turns out the engine loom had been configured to use an older style black plug coilpack.i was using a newer stle grey plug coilpack.the trouble is that the black plug requires 12v to power it up at a different pin to the greyplug type. fitted the older coil pack and cranked her overand she fired :D
does sound a little rough, thibk the exhaust is blowing underneath, and possibly a little loud, but its not as bad in person. cant wait to get it mapped now!
