Hi, i'm thinking of buying a Saxo VTR next month and been reading reviews and they seem OK. Are they good cars to buy?

Take one for a test drive?

Reasonably (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BE8A3xmpa-U/Txdnh6IwL6I/AAAAAAAAAMk/9QueJ90DtoI/s320/shit.png)good performance..
Good mpg. Good running costs.
It will break, but usually easy/cheap to fix.

Allthough you might aswell get a vts...

VTS is a joke on insurance whereas the VTR is affordable. Can you elaborate a bit more of why they're crap cars?

More or less the same car except it doesnt have a 16v.

Just check for rust in the boot, engine and camber at the rear.

That's alright, just means that i pull of slower than 16v cars right? Other than that the car looks alright for a 1.6ltr. Its either the Saxo VTR or the Fiesta Zetec S, and the Saxo VTR is a lot more cheaper ...

From what i read they go ok? lol till you hit 3rd gear. Not drove a vtr so i cant really answer. Plenty of folk here to answer that though.

Surely it's worth it..

Just to avoid the embarrassment.. when your cruizin in the vtr, pull up at the lights, look over then you see the shiny 16v badge.. :homme:

Even though the vtr would pull away cos more torque?...

But at the end of the day, it's a saxo... as long as your not expecting too much they're good cars! I've had mine a year, apart from a few minor problems, its been seriously reliable little car.

They're fun car's for the money.

Few things what let them down are -

Clutch release bearings are wank. (just means when they break they make a whirring noise in neutral but still function perfectly..)

Gearbox's seem to be pretty weak - Just depends if the box has had a hard life or not.

Rear beam's are prone to failing (mostly when lowered wrong) But how can you expect a beam whats 10+ years old to still be working perfectly?

Few thing's what make them fun -

Strong engines.

Good handling.

Cheap insurance.

Decent MPG.

Cheap to repair if something does break.

I've owned my VTR for almost 5 years - done 50,000 miles in that time..

Had to change the rear beam for a MOT - £120 second hand, still perfect now.

The gearbox went - Bought another second hand - and that went. But that's the risk in buying second hand. Finally found a good condition tight box.. and that's been on for 20-30k.. (1.1 box for £20)

Driveshaft started making a clunking sound - so bought 2 second hand ones for £30 - still fine to this day..

Also if the suspension part's haven't been changed - they're obviously going to be worn after all these years.

Not the end of the world tho - as I bought new suspension brand new and it was cheap and will last lots of miles! EG

Wishbones £84 for the pair
Drop links £24 for the pair
Track rod ends £12 for the pair
Top mount's £30 for the pair

Every car need's maintaining.. Hopefully that should be enough for you to make your decision?

Welcome,I've only owned my VTR about a month and so far so good. Been cheap to run and reasonable fun to drive.

good engines in both the vts and vtr allmost bullet proof.easy to fix.parts are cheapish.build quality is poor.but a great tuning market.gear box dont like to much stick.clutch bearings are real bad.rear ends tend to camber with naff bearings.but hay every car has its fults.get on you will love it.
