been given a couple of options by the insurance company but I'm stuck on what to do.

Yeah was due a clean. It's where I work there's loads of seagulls. Looks like it will be written off. Has only done 41000 miles aswell. They said they would give me 1200 for the car then minus my excess. I'll be left with about half of that :(. They said I can buy the car bk for £300 would be a cat c tho. Just doesn't seem worth it.

Insurance companies are out to make a profit and theyll offer you next to nothing for the car... Fix it yourself, the roof will be most expensive but a good pannel beater will sort it out, dont forget its no claim not no blaim, you claim and its there for 3 years minimum... Youll have to pay excess if your going through yours and theyll take that off the price of the car... If its their insurance write it off, but if its yours FIX IT!!! Lol

I know, so is going 75 on a motorway and yet even the Police do that. I just think that it would make more sense for cyclists to go on the pavement, most pavements have ample room for a cyclist to pass a person. And if they don't have room then any cyclist with sense would slow down, hop off and walk their bike past said person. :)

You're gonna have a claim on your record regardless due to the cyclist. Even if you counterclaimed as previously suggested you're still going to get saddled with at least 50% of the blame, so 50% of any compensation he gets.
Say you end up with £600, buy the car back for 300, and fix it with the other 300, thats an option, but you're still left with a Cat C car which would bother me but might others.
Otherwise its take the cash and go find a new car. As mentioned above though, try and negotiate on the price

I'm thinking the people slating cyclists are the one's who swear at folks for the smallest of reasons on the road and think they own it because they're in a car. Aka, knobs.

Drivers are far to impatient when it comes to cyclists.
They get right up behind them and will do anything to get past, even if it means getting close.
People need to chill out on the road and slow down a bit, waiting 30 seconds to pass a cyclist because of oncoming traffic is hardly going to make you late and if it does you are a cock for not leaving earlier.
Not directed at the OP by the way and I rarely cycle on roads, only to get to the offload tracks :).

Funny thing is, if it was a car that had gone through the red light and hit him, the other driver would be at fault if it was proven they went through a red light. Why do cyclists get different treatment? They are still 'road users'. IMO, if the cyclist went through the red light, and you have a witness to prove it, they are at fault.

as is the lack of care from cyclist. everyday I cross the traffic lights at st pancras station and 9 times out of 10 there a cyclist who cuts the red light and ploughs through walking pedestrians. I think there needs to be some sort of identification system on push bikes now just so they get slapped with a fine for cutting red lights.

Or ruling that they can just be slapped by a pedestrian if they're being an arse.. I like the ones that cycle more so in the middle of the road than to the left, I also beep as I go past them, hoping they'll get a freight and fall into the bushes.

haha there should be a thin wire running the width of the road when a light goes red. that way if a cyclist tries to cut the red light he/she'll get close lined off the bike.

I wouldnt say 'IF' you know the right people.
New roof panel is £140 from citroen. I was quoted £400 max to fit and paint the roof from a body shop. And that wasn't maes rates, just standard labour rate. New windscreens can be had for £100ish from local firms. Its only the likes of Autoglass that charge the earth for them. Wing, either live with it or buy 2nd hand for £20. Thats circa £700 max to repair it, probably less, assuming the visible damage is the only damage. At least op could keep the car and with no claim it wouldnt have a Cat C stamp on it for the rest of its life.

Most cyclists also own cars, and most car drivers also own a bike.
Why does every car owner hate bikes when most of them ride bikes too, and vise versa?
I have a car, and i cycle to work every day. Its better for my health, its fun and its considerably cheaper. Its about 6-7 mile each way, so i pass a lot of traffic on the way, and not once have i ever cut anyone up, or anyone cut me up. A cyclist should know that theyre not the biggest things on the road, and keep an eye out at ALL times, of whats going on around them, most importantly, they need to make themselves SEEN. Its a lot easier to get distracted when your driving a car cause you're comfy, sitting down and probly warm too, so there really isnt enough credit given to the cyclists.
I feel sorrt for the cyclist who got his by the OP here, but no doubt, he should have stopped for a red light as he was on the road, so really it was his fault. I also feel for the OP, but in all fairness, you should have seen the cyclist and more of a look out is needed when you're driving in the future.
I get that your car is a write off, but i bet the bike is pretty badly damaged too, and at least you both got out alive.
Would you have felt it was his fault if he had died, or would you be a wreck and be scared of getting in a car again?
Viley10

Well I wasn't speeding was at a cross road junction which only lets one set of traffic through at a time and goes in a clock wise direction. Like said before if it was a driver or a car then it would be a completely different story. I'd like to keep the car on the road and just been quoted £450+vat to fix it, that's a new windscreen, dents taken out of roof and sprayed. I'm not too bothered about the wing like said can just get a 2nd hand one. My insurance said if I fix it myself then it will have to have a mot and a vic check. Is this true? I thought that was only if I buy it bk?
Llardy
22nd May 2012, 13:43
if its technically not been written off then It won't need a vic check or MOT. you only need one when it's been classed as a write off, and that will only happen if the insurance company get a hold of the car. either way I'd still get an MOT afterwards just for safety purposes.

cyclists who have discipline are fine. cyclists who don't look where they are going and ride in the middle of the road deserve to be mowed down.
also, cyclists who ride 2 abreast deserve a blunt force trauma directly to the face. if you want to go for a ride with your mate then fine, but ride infront or behind them. in that situation the best thing to do is pass as close as you can to them, give it a rev and a beep in the hope one of them falls off and creates a domino effect, dicks.

Cyclists are a pain in the arse.
a) Because they are too slow.
b) Because the are usually up their own arse.
c) Because they wear ridiculous skin tight leggings.
They can't have it both ways. If your on the road you should have to pay insurance and tax like motorists. If not, get your self on the path and ride at a reasonable speed so you don't mow any grannys down.
Although horse riders are worse... as above but feel it's ok to leave piles of shite all over. :n:

That sucks mate very unlucky. I wouldn't say the car was a total loss though as long as the car hasn't been compromised structually. I do feel cyclists need some form of numberplate/identification etc so if they are involved in an accident they can be tracked down and if they are idiots they get their bike smashed up/taken away lol.
I have seen lots of cyclists run red lights as some of them don't think any part of the highway code applies to them. He should have stopped at the red light but it pays to take great care turning right at lights especially when you have to wait for a gap etc in oncoming traffic - never assume vehicles are going to stop at the lights because they turn red sometimes they might be proceeding though at speed. You usually have enough time after the lights go red to make the right turn if you are out in the middle of the junction but always beware of traffic around you and judgement of speed is vital to safe driving.

Cyclist's have a right on the road.
Motorist's have a right to overtake them - why would we want to be sat in a car paying tax/insurance/fuel going the same speed as a cyclist?
I alway's give plenty of room - but when there's 4 at side of each other hogging the road, it's fucking annoying.

tax, insurance and licensing would never work. would that mean a 3 year old learning to ride a bike can only do so after taxing, insuring and licensing their bike? if not, where do you draw the line?
they also wouldnt be taxed anyway, based on the fact that no emmisions are produced
