View Full Version : Seized Bolts

Was changing the pads, discs and 2 calipers on my rolla today, all was going smoothly.
Then went to take off the caliper carrier on the rear, the bolt was seized on and ended up rounding off!
Not really sure what would be the best way to sort this? Read about filing the edges then using a smaller socket but I'm not so sure.
Think I might just take it to the garage on monday, think this would be a big job? Concerned it would take a while therefore big labour charges:n:

Smash a smaller bit on the end. That would be my last resort :D
Picture of said bolt would give me an idea

Huh ? I'm changing the discs and pads all round. Have to take the carrier off to remove the discs

either smack a 16bit socket on thats slightly smaller so a 13mm.
weld a fatter bolt onto the head of the rounded one and use a cracker bar to get it off
if those 2 dont work then your stuffed you will have to cut it off drill it and re thread it

Juts take the whole caliper off, leave the carrier as it is on the caliper.
Anyway, it wont take them 5 minutes to get it off so dont worry, might charge £20 though if they weld it off.

Mate I have the caliper off, it's the carrier bolt that has rounded off! Need to remover the carrier to fit the discs.
And 20mins? Ideal, suppose they have the right tools etc

Why do you need to remove the carrier to remove to fit the disc?
McGuire86
26th May 2012, 21:17
On my car the carrier over laps the disc, if the carrier is on then the disc wont come off
Mochachino
26th May 2012, 21:20
Just hit it off with a hammer mate :y: will come straight off then, pull back the boot on the carrier add some grease and it will slide freely. Smash the old disc off the hub afterwards if its still on!

I think we're getting muddled up mate lol. I don't mean the caliper bolts that screw onto the carrier slider pins, meant the actual bolts on the carrier that connect to the hub.
Might be able to see what I mean here http://www.nrgizerbunny.com/toyota-corolla-technical/front-brake-disc-pad-change/

Is there any point in downloading porn? I prefer to find something new each time.
It's a real struggle not getting bored with the other half.

Got enough room to get at it with some mole grips? Get some wd-40 on it then get the grips on tight enough that you need both hands to close them. If that doesn't get it then I'd be stuck lol.

I would angle grind the bolt to a square and stick some mole grips on it

Not sure what WD40 would do apart from make the weak grip on the mole grips even more weak lol

No not on the bolt head, on the bit where the thread starts if you know what I mean? Works wonders that stuff does!
And I've usually had a pretty good grip off mole grips! Usually leave some nice deep teeth marks in the bolt anyway.

That looks good mate I would order 1 now but I need it done by monday :(
Maybe my mate will have one..
If not then I'll nip it down the garage, from the replies it doesn't seem as big of job as I thought so they can sort it for me, plus it's only a 1inch regular 14mm bolt so they're bound to have one to replace it :y:

First one should do the job, but buy the second one as well, just in case you get a wheel nut stuck :)

Weld another bolt onto it, then undo using that. Done it a few times to get out shitey bolts.
should use the proppa size socket in the 1st place :)
