On the 18th this month I should of been paid directly in to my account from my new job but the HR completely fucked up by one digit on the account number and now the moneys sitting in someone else's bank because it hasn't been rejected (happy birthday to you, cunt)
HR rang me today and said I'd have to ring up my bank to trace the money, in which I did, found out from the bank they can't do fuck all and it's payrolls job to chase to funds :\ so I go in to work and HR explain they can't really do much either just to rely on payroll from now.. so i'm left in an awkward situation... What can I do from here?

It's their fault not yours
Tell them your looking at legal action if your not paid double quick
They've fucked up. Think like this, if you owed your mate a tenner and popped round to his to give it him but lost in the street on the way would you tell him to go and find it himself?
I'd tell them to pay you sharpish and mention tribunals and stuff lol

Funny thing is the lady who processed the account details on system couldn't tell if the digit was a 1 or a 2 and took a wild guess instead of giving me a ring to confirm what it was!

I would be very surprised if its in some1 elses account. I very much doubt your account number will be 1 digit different from some1 else's at your bank.
I bet the money is probably floating around in the banks system.

Even if your account number was 1 digit out your sort code won't be correct for that account. So some one is telling you porky pies somewhere.

Exactly.
For it to go into some1 else account, it would need to be some1s account at your bank, which will share the same sort code. But for security reasons probably, they won't be able to assign some1 with an account number thats 1 digit different to yours. So i would be looking into it even further and don't just sit back and accept it.
Happened to me once, but the account number was completely different to mine. They knew right away the money was destined for my account, but couldn't act on it till i stepped forward and approached them about it. Was just sitting in the banks system waiting for me to claim it. After i went in and questioned them about it, they sent it back to my employers.

Would be highly unlikely to be in someone elses account due to that account number also needing to be part of the same sort code as yours, as mentioned above.
It's not the banks issue imo, your HR department should be sorting it out.

I had a similar situation when I worked at Phones 4 U.
HR had put the wrong pay through my account, I was off sick for 2 days and they hadn't been passed this info by my managers. They took the whole wage out of my account and told me they would put it back within a week minus the two days off sick. I told them because of this I had already missed a direct debit and I was holding them accountable for the charges and any more I get until the money is returned, and I was leaving work that minute to seek advice from Citizens Advice and ACAS. They told me the money would be in my account by the end of the day, and it was.
I don't think I had the right to do what I threatened and just leave work there and then but it certainly worked.

What? The sort code determines the branch the account is held at, It isn't different for every account....

I think he means, for reasons such as this situation, the account numbers for a certain sort code do not go up in increments of one.

Its not your problem.
Your HR/payroll department simply need to deal with their bank to get the money back. Thats not really an issue for them but it should not stop you getting paid correctly.
