Not sure what section to put this in, but move if its in the wrong section...

Whats the LAW against driving without a bonnet? If any

Also would this have any bad/dramatic effects on my engine obviously if it were to rain i would understand, but if its not and the weather in dry and sunny?

cheers

It's illegal to drive on the public road with no bonnet with the engine showing. Regulations about pedestrian safety and all that.

so long as there are no sharp edges, a vehicle does not require a panel...

hence, kit cars / atoms with engines exposed.

A number of years ago i took one of our minis out after some major work, we had no bonnet, grill, or headlights in. Typically we got tugged down a backlane and they never mentioned anything about the missing stuff. He was more concerned how quick we where attacking the corners lols..

Why would it matter if it rained?

because, everyone is worried about getting the engine bay wet... why, i dont know.

pouring water down your inlet is different to getting it wet.

Not as if the engine stays completely dry when it's raining heavily anyway...

This as far as I know. I've driven to, and from an MoT station (passed) with no bonnet. Mind you, that was in 1995 so things may have changed...

right, from the looks of things i might be driving up to Cambridge area without a bonnet... should be fun.

Surely rain pouring on top of your engine bay as your going 70-80 mph wont do it any good though?

go over 110 at all times then, the density of the air will dry the moisture out before it does any harm.

but no, unless you decide to run without an air filter you'll be ok.

Tontsy

also, make sure there are no sharp edges. thats the important part.

Im picking a bonnet up on the way to FCS and dont want to have a spare in the boot during the show really. Plus it would mean i can only take 2 people.

MiniGibbo
29th May 2012, 19:56
Why not pick it up before or after FCS and not think up retarded plans..?

Tontsy

pick it up, change it over, ditch your old one at the side of a hill for some scrote to make a sleigh out of it.

LSOfreak
29th May 2012, 20:08
what are you planning on doing with your old bonnet? cant you just leave in on the side of the road or something? or is a damaged bonnet worth something?

slammed_saxo_vts
29th May 2012, 20:14
Its not really damaged though, just a few stone chips and a little crease on the corner near the grill so im sure its worth something..... or even if i use as a winter bonnet as ive now got the space to store it.

Be a waste leaving it on the side of the road.

MiniGibbo
29th May 2012, 20:21
"winter bonnet" o my days.....

slammed_saxo_vts

Better that then drive about with a bonnet bra during the shitty months when they resurface the roads...

MiniGibbo
29th May 2012, 20:33
Why a Bonnet bra..? Are you going to get a front bumper bra or a winter bumper too..?

Maybe wing bra's..?

slammed_saxo_vts

I just cant stand having stone chips on my bonnet :wall:

No I want you to realise what a fucking bellend you sound and either collect it another day or carry it around in your back pocket all day at the show..

Again save on fuel costs, not making it another £25-£30 more expensive.
Dont want it in my car during the show, makes space limited. Means i can only bring one other person. May get damaged.
Thats why i simply asked whether or not driving without a bonnet was illegal

Need it explaining again? :wall::wall::wall:

And as for "winter bonnet" that's one of the stupidest things I've heard on here!

LOL a winter bonnet

ive always been stumped why people without polished wheels have winter wheels but a bonnet! you might aswell have a winter car lol

a stone chip probably occurs once every few years, you dont need a bonnet bra

Get a big cardboard box, flatten it, tape it to where the bonnet should be, job done

Pretty sure it's illegal over here, not over in the states though.

There was a big thread over on edition about it, hotrods etc get away with it because every moving part in the bay is covered. If you hit a pedestrian in your bonnet-less saxo it's going to get messy.

I can't bring myself to throw litter out the window :)

It's like people who get a drive through meal and then lob the contents out onto the side of the road, makes me shiver just thinking about it...

Edit - Didn't see the white text until the quote lol

Don't leave it at the side of the road like some pikey twat.

Dispose of it properly you cheap pikey, saxo's have a bad name as it is without you changing a bonnet on the side of the road like a gypo.

Just give the seller some money to dispose of it, if its such a big issue to yourself wanting the bonnet then you would pay the seller to get rid.
