Thought i would make a thread for this as im very bored.
My old man has recently started working in his cousins scrap yard that is always swarming with saxos.
Localy there are loads of grass track/banger events so took the opportunity to enter a car.
so a T reg VTR came in the other week and we are going to enter that.
its up to the stage where its fully gutted, just ready for some welding and cutting.
another saxo also came in the yard with a upper strut brace, a fat K&N filter and a 4 branch manifold so they are getting whacked on.
should be a flyer :)
pics up this weekend for anyone whos interested.
so far its cost £0
and my mate who does rallying is sorting us some part worn nobblys so we get a bit of grip on the fields.
should be a good laugh :y:

larger radiator to make fit somewhere
http://i1116.photobucket.com/albums/k566/rickycrone/IMAG0245.jpg
still a fair bit of wieght reduction yet, got the dash and all the insulation shit behind there yet.
rules are pretty straight forward.
no glass
meshed windscreen
harness
roll cage (not to any standard, just needs to pass screuteniering)
battery cut off mounted on outside of car.
front and rear tow points
doors to be welded shut.
and 2 gallon fuel cell inside car and original tank removed.
thats pretty much it.

For banger racing dont you really need a water tank inside the car instead of a radiator? Radiator might do for inside if you rig up a cooling fan and aux. pump

Its nicer than some of the saxos I've seen...

yeah alot of the boys run steam tanks mounted at the rear of the car instead of rads, were still unsure what to do yet, probably going to do one event with a larger rad and fit twin fans and see how we get on.
if we leave the rad where it is, we will defo need to put something infront for protection.
idealy we would like a bucket seat but rules only state a harness as minimum, but with a helmet on my head already touches the roof and thats with out some sort of roll cage, so eitherfit a bucket seat or modify the standard mounts lower.
the thing i love abou it being a banger car is you can bodge everything, which im exceptionaly good at :D

This and I also thought you needed some side impact bars on the drivers side welded to the cage?
Interesting build something I have always fancied but can't risk injury been self employed.

sorry yeah, door bars are required, forgot to mention.
and what most people do is cut the passenger down half way and fold it in so its easier to get in and out,

not much of an update, but fitted the manifold, and it sounds immense.
going to be running it with straight pipe from mani cut off about 2 foot long.
also fitted bonnet pins (part of rules and regs)

slammed the back end down onto the bump stops now, because from events ive been to watch, alot of the cars are high at the front and low at the rear and they handle very well on the grass, where as the few cars that were on standard hieght all round seemed to roll over quite easy, so this should stop that.
and fitted some 15" worn nobblys on the front, look fucking massive!
having a few minor clearence issues on full lock but nothing a sledge hammer and grinder wont sort out :)
done some more stripping but now it wont fire :( will get it going soon, I HATE ELECTRICERY!
we also fitted the larger rad from my mk2 vtr that i scrapped last week.
put some mesh over the front to protect rad and fan from stones and mud, probably going to put some kind of frame around the front end for protection and try to cover it with a bumper some how, surely think of something.
not sure if we are guna loose drive with the big nobblys up front, havent test driven it yet due to it not starting lol. if we do have trouble with them we have the other two 15" fox alloys with road tyres on so just swap em over, or failing that the other VTR rims with some road tyres.
heres a few pics. enjoy :)

and this is why it wont start! :panic:
http://i1116.photobucket.com/albums/k566/rickycrone/IMAG0319.jpg
apart from getting it going again, theres not really much left to do.
Inline fuel cell.
Mesh windsreen.
Gut the front doors and weld shut.
Cage and front end protection.
thats basicaly it, maybe give it a coat of oxford blue all over as we have a 5 gallon drum of it in the garage.
if anyone close by fancies coming round and having ago at getting it started your more than welcome :) no spark and no fuel but it will turn over all day long :(

water tank is for mostly 'unlimited or national' bangers rads are for everything else for racing to be honest

its for banger racing but its more push and spin rather than full contact demolition derby style.

well starts of as grass but soon mud after the first heat lol
and most the tracks we will be racing on are oval, just some bigger than others.

ive never used a 'bodged' window net in bangers...
all its there for is to stop your arm going out 'if' you go over which is highly unlikely.
most boys dont even use window nets, just mesh on the front window.
this isnt a pro worldwide competition series. Its local banger racing, the idea is to spend £0 or as little as possible.
its basicaly ameteur crop car racing, infact i wouldnt even say its up to that standard, just a bunch of locals getting cars from the scrap yard, stripping them out and ragging them round a field for a couple of hours on a sunday afternoon.
i seen a roll cage in the back of an escort at the last event that consited of 1 X big fat tree trunk behind drivers seat bolted to floor and roof. if he had of went over it would of saved him. jobs a good un.
i dont understand how you can say banger racing got "too expensive for you"
its one of the cheapest motorsports going lol.

well.. 250 a car. then time to build it, then fuel for car then fuel for vehicle whats towing the 'banger' then then you dont that back in scrap, then you got all the spares for the vehicle. so.. it all soon mounts up. :wall:

well considering we get the cars for FREE, get all materials to build cage and spare tyres wheels etc for FREE,
£10 for entry per event, and i think £15/£25 for the racing liscence or there abouts.
only other cost is fuel for the banger and the vehicle towing it on the trailor.
and considering all the tracks we will be going to are at the furthest probably about 10 minute drive it wont use much :)
so yes, its very cheap, so what if the car only lasts one event because its "soft as shit" we will just chuck it back in the heap where it came from and do another.
now stop filling my thread with shit.
i would appreciate it if a MOD could delete all these troll comments.

well you obviously dont know the right people if you were paying £250 for a car to banger race WTF?
no wonder you were finding it expensive. £250 down straight away before even touching anything else.
if i had to pay that for a scrap car i wouldnt be doing it. simple as.

yeah the events are up around the newtown/welshpool area, places called Sarn, Abermule, Miefod and Bettws are the main ones.
the abermule one has already been, next one is 26th august at bettws so hoping to have the car sorted by then!

rick_VTR
31st July 2012, 12:19
no not really.
its low contact banger racing on a oval track marked on a field. simple as that. the idea is to be the first one across the line not the last one standing so to speak.

havent updated this in a while
basically, due to the wiring problems, the mk1 vtr got chucked back on the scrap pile and we decided to build a mk2 vtr the day before the race! lol.
gutted it, built a cage of some shape, inline tank off a dumper in the scrap and good to go!
it looked like this...

http://i1116.photobucket.com/albums/k566/rickycrone/IMAG0342.jpg
http://i1116.photobucket.com/albums/k566/rickycrone/IMAG0343-1.jpg
sadly it only lasted 2 races
i did the first race, and the car cut out after about 5 laps and had to be pushed off by the tractor, managed to get it goin again and dad took it out for the second race but after 2 laps the fuel pump over heated and burnt out so had to call it a day after that.
itwas very wet as youc an see all the mud, pretty gutted it on lasted aslong as it did but we didnt really put much effort into the build so wasnt to bad.
got the bug for it now and goin to build something decent for next season!
