Hi guys
I turned 19 on the 24th and was just looking at insurance quotes, it has gone down quite a considerable amount, 1600 fully comp from 2600 tpft
I dont mind spending about 2k on insurance for the right car, or even a little more, like 2500 max for a good quality motor :y:
What cars would you guys suggest as a nice upgrade from my 1.1 saxo? A would like something with a bit more comfort, not too bothered about speed but it would be nice
Heres a little selection of cars I have been quoted for so far, I was surprised with the C2 GT
£1600 - SAXO
£1993 - Peugoet 206
£2097 - 1.2 CLio
£2352 - 1.6 Astra SXI
£1970 - 1.7 CDTi Astra
£2700 - Merc C class 2.5
£2645 - Seat Ibiza 1.9 sport
£2448 - Audi A4 1.9
£2400 - 1.6 VTR C2
£2425 C2 1.6 GT
£2721 - C2 VTS
£2400 - Hyundai coupe 1.6

Sure is, looks like either way I'm spending a fair bit on insurance, Just trying to see if I can get a reasonable car for the money, the 1.1 Saxo has had better days

out of that list i would go for the A4 tbh . . .
but how on earth is it soo expensive for some people? i was 20 when i got my Leon and that cost me a grand, fully comp. 2.0ltr Turbo.
now its less than half of what i paid first time around.

You're crazy if you're willing to spend that on insurance, for those cars.
+1 on tontsy, I've never paid more than 1k for insurance. I don't get how prices are so high?

Just get something small and then when it comes down get something better
Why not try quotes on a furio or quicky, be somewhere inn
Between your current car and a vtr
Nippy enough, an upgrade, and cheap as chips

Wait till you are 21 when your insurance will go down alot more. Imo its a waste of money spending them amounts on insurance when you have coped with a 1.1 for long enough. Just think of the money you will save over the next two years if you keep to a small engine. Is a larger engine that will cost more to tax, cost more in fuel and no doubt tyres and consumables actually worth being stung 2k lol

Is this still true? I was under the impression the big drop is now when you are 25... I hope you're right as i'll be 21 for my renewal.

i dont follow bandwagons, whilst all my mates were "ERE BAH! GET A CIVIK TIPE ARR! " i thought of better ways to spend 20k.
i got my car for a purpose, not for street cred. and thats the mistake the majority of people make.
the rest who pay an insane price for insurance, what do you tell them? you are going to do 50k a year, drive to work blind folded and its been written off 5 times?

tbf i paid £998 fully comp for the first year of the R6, but i bought the bike before even checking insurance! its now like £300, plus european cover, plus ride other bikes and all other extras. winning.

I definitely need a new car from the 1.1, As its in need of new brakes, new gear box, new clutch, idles mad, cuts out, just about everything is broke or about to go on it
Is there any cars you guys can think of that might be cheaper to insure than the saxo?
I could just buy another saxo I suppose, Although I do like the look of the quicksilvers

buy a proper car and stop fannying around in 'boy racer' hatchbacks - thats where the real savings in insurance are

I used to pay out over £1000 for third party on my ZZR.....
Now I pay out £80 per year Fully Comp with all extras like yourself. Bargain!

thats rather expensive! a few years ago at 19 i got insured on a new 3 series for a little over £1k
none of them cars are particularly worth paying that much on insurance tbh
get an average car like a vtr which shouldnt be too expensive and get a better car when youre 21

When I started driving - quite some time ago - I asked the local insurers what the cheapest cars to insure were and they found out for me. Its worth trying.
For what its worth, one of the cheapest cars to insure at the time was a Vauxhall Chevette.

I turned 21 in April, my insurance on the mazda halved. Get yourself on pustonheads and see what you fancy. Don't ask a bunch of strangers what car you should spend your own money on. Personally I'd get a 1.6 A3. Comfy, cheap, low insurance and not desperately slow.

Get a quote on a Porsche 924, cheap, rwd, it's a porsche so when you're 19 it's pretty much the coolest thing on the planet compared to your mates, and the engine's basically from a VW van so parts aren't silly prices.
Or do what all the 19 year olds round here seem to do and get a spankers hot hatch for £20k on finance!
VTR_Bass87

get an old honda you can't go wrong, cost you less in the long run
jasonmayall
1st June 2012, 12:16
Go for a car which you like, not what other people like.
I know I cant really talk (owning a VTR) but everyone now-a-days seems to go for the same sort of cars. They all start off with something small and pathetic, Move onto something small and nippy, then end up with a turbo.
If your 19, not after speed, then dont go for a big power car, its a waste of money. You can have just as much fun in something that handles nicely and you can really push through the corners without laying a brick in your pants.
Not sure if your age will allow it with most insurance companies, but something a bit older, a bit cooler and a bit easier to fix when it breaks would be a choice of mine.
Mk1/2 fiesta? you dont see many of them around, could pick one up in half decent nick for a good price and you'll love working on it. They're so simple :)

As above, I wouldnt advocate a 924 myself as I'm not a fan, but classic car policies are usually a good bit cheaper if you dont mind a car that might need spanner work every so often

theyre the ones wholl get stung if the kids stops paying..
what normally is the case though, is the kid isnt paying for it either.. just the parents buy them a new hatch to show off to there freinds "look what we bought our son".

What about something like a Triumph Spitfire? Probably cost a bit more but you'll insure it for less to offset that, and it's cooler than kittens tits, you'll be able to sack off the likes of asda and get yourself a specialist policy through a broker. Get on Pistonheads and ask more on there, loads of younger lads running proper cars over there.
Hillman Imps are pretty cool as well on a set of minilites or something.

I'd pay the £1600 for the saxo if it's a vt.
Just have to face it that you will pay a stupid price as insurance has gone made in the last few years.
All comes down to I you think it's worth it. When I was 17 I was paying £2k insurance on my vtr, at that point in life I didn't spend any money on any thing other than clothes and going out so a fair chunk of wages being paid for a car I enjoyed and used everyday seemed reasonable to me.

Its the area you live in. More crime = higher premiums.
BT12, 13 14 and 15 in Belfas (Falls, Shankill, Ardoyne, Ballysillan (in that order)) will always be higher than other parts of Belfast, Like Malone Road, Lisburn road etc.
Same goes for Belfast in general compared to other parts of the country. A quote in Bangor will be a fair whack cheaper than the same one in any area of Belfast.
Is this still true? I was under the impression the big drop is now when you are 25... I hope you're right as i'll be 21 for my renewal.
No its not true. My insurance was hovering around the 2k mark for a good while, but when I did a quote (icidently the one that I jumped at for my Sax) in March it went down a good bit. Im 23 in a fortnight.
Those quotes are mad. In which case just get a small-engined car that is cheap to insure and build up a NCB.
I paid over 2.2k to insure my VTS at 19. Sold it for less than that the following year lol.
