View Full Version : Mk4 Golf gti 2.0 petrol - Opinions?
Typical new car thread...
Found a mk4 golf gti 2.0 (115) for sale literally down the road from me
Up for £2k but might take offers :y:
its a 2002 on 02 plate, black, 3 door, 126,500 miles, mostly vw service history except for last 3 services but has receipts for bits and bobs done
Insurance quote came back at under half what im paying for the vtr? go figure.. so its mighty tempting, I'm just looking for abit more comfort driving, the saxo is getting annoying...
anyways..
Looks tidy enough, couple of dents in passenger door, but nothing major, see pic below?

Opinions? comments, questions welcome :D

To be totally honest with you dude, stay away.
not good on fuel
i'd rather ride a donkey to work, it would be more fun and quicker
overweight
slow
get a diesel.

If I was buying a golf with an engine that size I would go for a diesel. Go have a look anyway.

Pal had one of these, my furio was quicker no word of a lie.
Very slow, bad fuel averaged 28mpg iirc.
Better off with the diesel version.

Ill keep an eye out then :y:
thanks for the info :)
Very slow for a 2.0, bad mpg. If you fancy a golf and have that sort of budget look for a TDI

a mate of miles got the mk3 8v 2.0 gti, cant believe it warrants a GTi badge - portly and slow. Even a standard vtr would beat one.
Remapped and modded TDi in these is the one to go for, or perhaps the 1.8 20v but even then they aint quick standard. R32 though is epic

These were badged as Golf CL's in the US. Says it all really.
Also, have a good look around. The GTi 115's are worth feck all. £2k for 1 with 125k is about £800 over-priced.

Shit slow, heavy arsed crap. Don't bother. Mk4s were the worst golfs ever. End of.
Thanks all for the info :y:
I dont really "Want" a golf...
Just I quite like them, and it would end up looking something like this:

without the dodgy bonnet vents...
not really looking for a fast car, just something that looks tidy and is comfy to be in :y:
What are the 1.8t's like on mpg? Anyone had hands on experience?
Mid thirty mpg average (on 1.8T's), motorway miles might see you in to the low fortys.
Alot of uncared for 1.8T's out there, easy to end up with a lemon.

whats the point in putting money into a car you dont "want". :wall:
get the 20vt or tdi.

Rammed enough money in to my vtr, doesnt make much difference on what I spend on lol
I like golfs, but they arent top of my list... just most mk4s seem to be overpriced for what they are, alot around want 2k + for proper sheds :panic:
One I mentioned looks tidy enough for an alright price, milage doesnt bother me, I dont know why people look at it like a life counter :S
My dads E reg shogun died the other day.. 256k miles and rarely looked after, it was just a work horse :\
Moving on...
Ill keep an eye out for others locally :y:

Derv is what i would get in black. I do like them but they are imo a bit boring to look at..

Id only get a derv mk4.
I like cock tbh but only in black
Racist fuck.
Try to find a 1.8T instead. I've got an octy vRS with the 1.8t and it returns 32-35mpg average, up to 38-40 on motorway and had a decent spread of torque.
Far better engine for daily use and better for tuning too.

Your 192bhp 323 is quicker than a 280bhp M3 3.0?
What are you smoking? Ganja or smack? Can I have some..? :fcuk:
edit- I missed the "When". Very nice word to use, "when" lol

Even at 191hp with its current weight yeah a oem 3.0 would be lost in the cloud of smoke behind me around track.
On the road it would have the legs as you can't carry speed.
I was talking more once I get it back together with a new heart though.

I like the mk4 golfs.
My mate has a 1.6 version (his may be mk5 actually, i don't know) it's not 'quick' but its nippy enough and good on fuel - which suits him as he's not a quick driver.
plus they're nice cars to be in, on short and long drives. decent leg room front and rear for a hatchback, and look quite nice in a half decent spec (not base model, yet not GTdi - or whatever the top spec is)
