Hi guys,
So been thinking of getting this (http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201224475757509/sort/default/usedcars/model/saxo/make/citroen/postcode/st66ns/page/1/radius/1500?logcode=p) car, however I'm getting quotes of 8k plus. Cheapest I found was £2,800 with co-op young drivers but that still seems way too steap for me, especially for a 1.0 saxo.
Can anyone here offer any advise and point me in the right direction?
Cheers.

The right direction would be the bus stop
Insurance companys just dont want to insure young drivers anymore, so the premiums are sky high - They do it because they can get away with it
I have a 1.1 saxo and my first quote TPFT was 2,600
Im looking to renew this year, had a quote off elephant for 1,600 fully comp

Why do you think I learned to drive? To get away from buses and public transport in general. Also, I'm 20 not 17. Still young but I should still be getting cheaper insurance. Will ringing up make any difference?

yeah always ring up they give you the best deals
EDIT: 2,800 is rediculous!

Get a Fiat Seicento, lowest insurance group..
This (http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201224475127634/sort/default/usedcars/engine-size-cars/less_than_1l/fuel-type/petrol/price-to/1000/transmission/manual/radius/1500/page/4/postcode/bh255al?logcode=p)is also nice. 0-60 in never.

Paying £2800 insurance on a £350 car is stupid.
Try quotes on something other than a Saxo.

Tell me about it friend. I've tried a range of cars and keep getting the same. I've even been getting quotes of up to 20 k lol.

I dont like it but if it saves a stonking amount of cash then play the system. Drive like a granny and thats a lot of money that can go towards a new car in a year or so once you have good no claims discount and some decent driving experience.

Have you got both parents added as named drivers? Lowered the annual milage, and all that jazz?

These quotes are coming from the co-op young drivers' insurance btw. And my mother doesn't drive so I can't add her as a main driver. I'm gonna give them a ring to see how they justify charging near 3k. Disgusting!

wouldn't bother mate, with co op young drivers scheme you can't get a quote over the phone.

No not as a main driver, just as a named driver, it means they are legally allowed to drive the car. Pretty sure you can add anyone, family, friends. As long as they have driving experience it should get you some money off.
I've got both my parents on mine. Theyre never gonna drive my car, but I think it knocked around £100/£200 off?.. cant quite remember exactly, but still worth looking into.

Managed to get a Citroen C2 for £2100. Looks like that's the best deal I'm gonna get. And hopefully with it being with co-op young drivers' scheme, I'll get a discount after 3 months.

Premium changes for everyone using a number of factors, including occupation, age, number of years youve had a licence, where you live, type of vehicle etc, however regardless if you're 17/20 if you've only recently passed your test and it's your first year insurance, companies will quote highly as you are a higher risk to them.
At the end of the day when learning you have a qualified instructor with you at all times and you adhere to the limits and law, when driving alone you get a sense of freedom and do as you please and evidently leads to accidents through lack of experience.
Why don't you try one of the insurers which is promoting the 'black box' to assess driving and also if you don't drive between 11PM an 6AM it will lower insurance premium.

do you know what i dont know. i have two named drivers both female and i live in a good area in torquay so its a win win situation on that front. my first years insurance was a killer at 2500 for the 1.1 but after i kicked up a fuss when they wanted 1800 quid at renewal for my 306 dt it just instantly dropped since i have been driving i have had like 9 cars all with a pretty high insurace group at about 10 but since the first year i have never paid more than a grand and have been with admiral since i passed my test :D i think they just love me  but i hate them they are crap and 9/10 times they have crap customer serive so everytime i ring up and they are rude i soon tell them and file a complaint! but now i just speak to one person called sarah shes nice :D and welsh.... NOMMMMMMM !!! last time i was on the phone insureing the saxo she was saying how she just brought a vts that has been bodied :D my kinda gal!

If you lied about where your vehicle is parked can they find this out? I know it's risky and could potentially void my whole policy if they find out but could they really find out such a little lie?

I got a quote of 2600 TPFT but it was with iKube.
When I was speaking with the guy on the phone, he said that they have a lot of claims from cars that are insured for less than £1000 and if you paid more for the car, it'd bring the insurance down. When he compared it, the insurance quote for a 1.1 saxo for £500 was £3200/y and if I had paid £1000 it would bring it down to £2600, so that's what I did.
I am restricted in my driving hours, but it doesn't matter to me as I don't intend to drive in those hours. I'll also get my 1 year no-claims bonus at the end of my policy so I will probably be able to get better deals elsewhere without the restrictions.
TL;DR: try insuring the car for £1000 or more

They will never be prove where you park the vehicle at night but it is cheaper to either garage it or park it on the road mine is half and half so I just put it down as parked on the road :) 2600 is a lot though I would even concise looking for a different car tbh

They might be able to prove you don't own a garage though.
Think about it, car gets stolen off the side of the road over night.
Insurance assesor comes out and says.....'its meant to be parked in a garage, why was it not? Can you show me the garage?'
All of a sudden you are fcuked.

Putting your vehicle in you garage puts the insurance up! I have been playing around since this thread was posted! by putting your vehicle in your garage it Is an increased risk due to if your house gets burgled your car keys will undoubtably be on show to the thief. Witch means all they have to do it check you garage hey presto a get away vehicle . No forced entry no noise where as if it is parked on the road the have to find the car brake into it if the dont have the keys and drive away. There are more chances that the thief will be caught in the act by a naighbor or be caught down the road due to witnesses and the police so always say your car is parked on a street not on a drive or a garage especially if you live in a nice area as these places are targeted by scum more often! I hope this clears a few things up for everyone.

With this (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1997-Vauxhall-Corsa-1-2-Petrol-/280895087496?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item4166a6e388) car the insurance would be £1800. The miles are little off-putting though. Thoughts?

Ahhhhhhh no! 130 k on a 1.0 L run a mile and hide somewhere it will have nothing but problems my mate has one an it's in the garage every other week!
Try cars that young people don't normally go for :/

Why get a vtr at 17 any way I was happy with my 1.1 people with VTRs an and vts's are just a liability to other road users at the age of 17 the amount of young lads I see "big pimping" around Torbay in vt?'s and getting them self in shit because they have fucked up on a corner in the wet is un real. But that's just my opinion people may think differently I am guessing te insurance company's share my views as well hence the 3100 pound price tag for mostl likely a 400 quid shit piece!!!

£3k is the insurance company saying 'we don't really want to insure you but if you insist, here is a stupid price'

Car insurance is different for everyone. all aspects count including where you live and how many miles you think you going to do.
There are things you can such as lower the amount of miles you think youll cover each year, change when you want the cover to start and adding named drivers. i added my gf onto my cover and it cut it down by £200.
This is my second car.
no no claims discount and i am 20 yrs old. £777 a year paid in full.
this is with elephant.co.uk

Get a sex change. My Audi is insured with the missus as main driver as it saved us £80.
Neither of us technically are a main driver as neither need the car to get to work so its all above board lol
