So, a little over a month ago my friend broke up with his fiance, and said if they dont get back together with a month, then he'll look at a plcae to live, and would I be interested in moving in with him.
I agreed, and we started looking for properties, yesterday he rang and said he'd been to a viewing and he loved it, and it was perfect.
We've put a desposit down, and I'm not uncertain if I can afford it, financially.
I get paid at the last businessday of the month, £930 (ish)
I calculated my out payments (£96)
The flat costs £795 a month, and he said I could pay £400, and he'll pay tax, water, gas, electric.
So thats basically £500 gone, with only £400 left, minus my car insurance thats now £300- £330.
My question would be; how much do you have as a shopping budget, and a disposable income a month?
I'm planning on sandwiches mon-fri as travel a lot for work. And dinner mainly pasta.
Its melting my brain thinking what I have isnt enough, and whats a good way to organise your money?
Cheers for the help

And what if he gets back with her next month and decides he doesn't want to live with you anymore and leaves you in a mess?
I spend about £40 a week on food shopping if that helps.

You'll struggle tbh..
I bring home fuck all, probably £1000 a month after taxes.
I live in my Mums old house as she retired and pissed off to another country.
We just pay the bills, council tax, utilities etc. It works out around £300 each for me and my brother.
Then we have Car/bike insurance on top of that, say £200 each.. and other costs to go with that, petrol and whatnot.
Food wise, I eat crap. I can live off £20 a week food and drink.
Phone bill..
I'm left with around £100 a week spare, but that all goes to shit if we have anything unexpected to pay.
If you're used to going out on a weekend, or modifying your car with new bits often.. you'll struggle.

I know plenty of people who have nothing left after rent and bills. £300 left over is alright, I have 3-350 a month to live on after rent etc
You'll struggle massively.
I would steer well clear until you break the £1.2k a month earnings at least.

He wont, she's gone with someone else now, and he wants to move on.
He's paying the deposit (2.5 months rent)
Why you earn so little.....
I'm a trainee where i've started, review in 3 months, so expecting a pay rise, earnt less in Mcds

I'd be happy with £100 a week. My insurance and car will be same cost as yours, and its only the food I have the issue with.
I'd go out once a month, end of month so I know I can afford too, and my car is modded anyway, and part of my initial 96, was allowing £20 a month towards car for petrol, which I'd use to go to shops as again, I drive work van 5 days a week, and get free diesel.
Thanks for replies
Put it this way, you've got a lot more to think about, life's luxuries, for example TV Licenses, Internet, Maintenance, Fuel Costs and even say if your car fucks up, (because its french, it will) you'll be left with near nothing. That's one hell of a chunk of your wages gone, and on a property that you'll never actually own. I'd rather throw £400 a month into my savings account and after 2 1/2 years there is a mortgage deposit there with ease.

Well, i'm quite careful with money anyway, the 3-350 has accounted for food, which is the purpose of the thread to see how much you guys spend

You live by your pay bracket, If I can afford rent/ bills etc, then having an extra £200 wouldnt really make all the difference in the world, you'd just spend it on something, or get lazy and go mcds at lunch.
Staying focused 350 sounds like a comfortable amount per month to spend on living really, as for the last few months i've pissed £200 up the wall on a weekend, and coped fine.

moving out is SO expensive, me and my girlfriend have got a 2 bedroom bungalow and luckily its family owned so we only pay £200 a month rent, plus all the bills ect. I earn £830 a month at the minute because im an apprentice and my girlfriend earns about £1000, i wouldnt move out unless you know you have ATLEAST a few hundred spare each month after everything!

TV license is included in rent, internet would be £10 each, no landline, everything else included, I mentioned fuel in previous post, I'd use my car to go to the shops, if that.
And I understand about savings etc, but atm, i'm spending £250 living with my mum on rent, and pissing another £300 on nights out and take aways, which is I'm careful comes to what i'll be paying when I live away anyway

If you're just funding for your own food, I wouldnt be too worried.
£100 a month I'd say is more than enough.
Just try to think about other things though that may take your wages (I didn't)
As said, if you're car breaks, you want to go on holiday, Christmas..

What happens if you get a Mrs?
£40 for a meal out minimum, £50 for a good night at the Cinema with a snack after, buying her stuff etc, day out to a theme park £80. There goes your spare £££. I'm not saying this to put you down, if you think you can do it nicely, then do it.
Sit down with a pen and paper and work out the outgoings now, vs the outgoings with your money going to pay someone elses mortgage pretty much. I don't get it, I earn nearly double what you're earning, and have the same outgoings, but end up potless at the end of the month and I don't rent/have a mortgage.

Your post was extremely enlightening.
I have done a rough calculation and my outgoings for everything will be £580-£620 depending.
The left over will be saved or on special bits
I cannot stress enough, when people say if my car goes wrong, I'm putting £20 a month into a pot, that will be for the car, doesnt sound like much, but I will be doing about a maximum of 50 miles with that.
And my car is mechanically fine atm, parked in a secure location
Tell you what, scrap everything i've said, do it :) If it fails, you can always move back out.

If I get a Miss? Well a pizza on a tuesday is buy one get one free, I'm a cineworld unlimited member, so dates wont come to much. If she's for the long haul she'd understand and wouldnt want me to splash out money, rather cosy nights in. Yes, a rainy day might come along, but then life would be too easy.
Theme parks are 2 for 1, literally all year, or savings online, I've never paid for price for a theme park, and never intend too.
As I've said, you live by the amount you get paid, I've pissed so much money up the walls these last few months, being my birthday in june, I went thorpe park, clubbing, spent easily £150 over the days, ate fast food every day this week, I still have £150 to last me till friday. With everything paid off.

I have £900 disposable income most months and I still piss that up the wall in some way or another and that's without overtime.
Food I spend maybe £100-£150 a month on just me but I won't eat cheap stuff.
The bills will depend on your lifestyle and what sort of place you are renting.
An early 1900's house with single glazed windows will cost a shit load more to heat than a 2 bed modern apartment with only 1/2 exterior walls.....

we spend roughly £400 a month on food but thats two adults and a toddler
we have no disposable income every month after bills and food and were fine. Just depends how important having lots of money to spend on yourself is i guess, personally if you have no real reason to move out, i wouldnt bother and just save.

Throughout uni I've had a weekly budget of £50 not including rent.
I'm moving out of my uni house & into a "real" house on saturday and will be trying to cut that down more to get out of debt. But I've been more than happy on that budget including nights out etc. Just need to watch it.
i became a retard last year and landed myself in huge debt, but this year I am slowly dragging myself out on the same budget.

Depends how good you are with cash. When i was looking into my flat i was told by the estate agents to budget max 60% of wages towards the rent and council tax.
Luckily my wages are no where near minimum wage.

And we both have double bedrooms, and i'd use master bathroom, he'd use the ensuite he'd have. The lounge would have 2- 3 seater sofas, my 32 inch tv would be in my room.

Not being funny but have you ever dated a girl over the age of 12? Even someone who isnt a money grabbing whore girls do generally want some form of a life still.
Id check the contract duration with your friend, and your savings. If its a 12month tennancy and you do get into trouble you can always seek a small term loan. Finish the tennancy and then sort out the small gap in finances.

No. 12 years old is my limit, as soon as they are older, they are ruined.
Its a 12 month loan, rolling contract, so we'll resign if we want another year, in the second year we can leave earlier then the 12 months with 3-4 weeks/ months notice (cant remember)

I'm not sure what plannet your living on. After all that cash flow you have £100 left. Your most likely to spend that on a night out or on more food. Have you budgeted in petrol costs?
There are so many other factors, mot, tax, tyres any problems with car. You need some sort of money for any problems that occur.
As Ryan said a girl is not going to stick around to go to the cinema once a month and eat pizza. They want to go out have a good time show them a good time.
What about christmas birthday time, you wouldn't even afford presents for your family/friends let alone the girlfriend.
Srs give it more thought in your circumstance i personally wouldn't do it.

I dont know what prices for flats are like round your area but i certainly struggled! I moved into a flat with my ex a year ago I was working full time and he brought in fuck all, I brought in about £900 per month after tax, i also received help with rent which was about £200 a month, my rent was £475 and that included council tax.. After bills, food shop and my travel to work I was left with sweet fuck all and it was the worst. Probably wouldnt of struggled as much if my ex got off his arse and brought some cash in too.
Now im working again Im going to be moving into a place with one of my best friends or we are gonna stay living at home, work, save up some cash and move out of the area.
Id make sure you can afford it and your friend is defiantly going to stick to it as most tenancy agreements are a minimum of 6 months and you dont want to be stuck with that if he decides to do one. Good luck :)

Hopefully rochester is cheaper than Maidstone as a top floor 2 bed apartment here is like £700+ and that's without the £150 a month council tax and bills!!
I rent a 3 bed with two other workmates at the moment, £350 all in which includes Virgin TV with sports etc in each of our rooms.

I reckon you'll be alright money wise if you're careful. If you get a girlfriend, it doesn't have to cost the earth. My gf doesn't like spending lots of money, and we're happy... We also have no plans to live together, so don't worry about moving her in.
On the other side though, you seem to just be tagging along... Doesn't sound like you got much say in this other than "yes I'll live with you" or "no I wont" which says to me that he's gonna be calling the shots in this place, and you'll be the bitch.

It would appear everyone on here thinks that to have a girlfriend you need to spend lots of money on them, and it must be you who pays, no halves or them paying... Then you remember that only a handful of them are over the age of 19 anyway, so the majority have no clue what they're on about!

It's easy to manage to survive but it's hard when you want to do something decent, for example I went to IOW this week and I'm going to SHM next month, this is going to tax me hard for the next few months. I'd recommend getting a credit card with a 6m low/no interest thing on it for emergencies, for example if your car fucks up and you need it to get to work its a life saver.

Exactly... I know people who value things other than gifts and money are hard to come by, but I'd seriously wait out until I found someone who just valued effort and time together over gifts and money, regardless of how much money I had.
Hell, my definition of an awesome Christmas is just being around nice people and having a nice time... that costs next to nothing. Same applies to every "special" day, not that I value any specific days.

As Dom has said, If you got a Mrs, would you really want her to be living with you and your flat mate? What happens if in the unlikely event she doesn't get on with him?
Logic_guy being very unlogical once again.
I spend around £30 - £50 a week on food but its dependant on what you are buying. I have just moved into a 3 bed house with garage and rent is £600 per month, guess im lucky.

Ok I shall put it how it is, I had no choice to move out my parents split up and both moved away
So not matter how much money I have/earn I had to get a house so to choose between gas, electric, water and food over going for a meal ect I think I know what I want
LOL Valentines day. Are you some sort of pussy whipped bitch who makes an effort on shit days like that? Wouldn't dare have a gf who believed in shite like that. Am I the only one fortunate enough to have a girlfriend who genuinely doesn't want stuff that costs money?
This is not aimed at you, its aimed at the op, i didn't want a life story.
This guy has the option of moving out or not.
You both live up the country. Srs come to the south east and see how expensive life is first. The op is in the south east £100 money left over will not get you very far.
Lol valentines day is just the culture of society nothing wrong with it at all. I'm man enough to admit i will go out and spend some money on my gf unlike your broke ass.

Spending money on valentines day is the norm is it not, is that what the other 90% in a relationship do?

My food costs around £40 a week/ £160 per month for 2 of us. It was hard moving out and I have no disposable income at the end of every month but it's the best thing I've ever done! I say go for it - You can always move back in with your parents if it doesn't go well can't you?
A sensible option would be to save £400 each month for 2 years as stated - but it's up to you - what do you want?

It would appear everyone on here thinks that to have a girlfriend you need to spend lots of money on them, and it must be you who pays, no halves or them paying... Then you remember that only a handful of them are over the age of 19 anyway, so the majority have no clue what they're on about!
Even when paying halves if you decide to have a night out and go to a fairly respectable restaurant, you will be paying 30-40 quid.
My gf pays halves but you still have a cost involved, some people do like to leave the house though and venture into the outside world.
People are just being honest with the op so he is aware of things, especially baker who is from the same area where you can't buy a house for 50p.

Don't always have to do stuff that costs money though... For the record, I spend more time out of the house, than in the house. I'd just stick to what I can afford, or I'd eat in then go outside, but I like stuff like walking and hiking etc, not necessarily going out of the house to go and sit somewhere else inside...

I actually do fancy giving fell running a go, as every time I walk I end up thinking about Lord of the Rings when Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli are chasing the Orcs that have Merry and Pippin, and it makes me want to be able to run forever, chasing Orcs...

I've read all the posts in this thread and would like to address a few issues formally raised.
Living in kent, a standard 3 bed house costs about £850 a month, this is a penthouse apartment in Rochester for £795, I am contributing £400 for the rent, everything included, my friend will be contributing about £700 worth (paying all tax, electric, and water bills)
I have explained varies times, after rent and monthly bills i'll have £300-350 a month disposable income. I drive my car once a week, for 10 miles, its hardly going to get thrashed, considering its mechanically sound.
I will be taking out a credit card, and using it in emergancy situations, and my parents are extremely supportive

Sounds like you've sorted it mate, However i would be wary of your pal paying £700 a month when your only putting in £400. Surely if he found someone willing to split 50/50 you would be out?
If you wanted a 3 bedroom house £850 a month will get you a dog terraced property with no parking. Being realistic your looking at £900-£100 for anything decent.
Is it any of these...take the one with the view of the water?

Volcano insurance is overrated, we specified tornado insurance along with earthquake excess policy.

Funny thing is Rochester isn't even a great town, prices are relitively cheap due to mass redevelopment recently.
Same as gillingham and a few other Medway towns, you can get reasonable places for what is 'cheap' compared to most down here.

Ofcourse I can. I merely did it so you can refer to it.
The whole point of having 3 months of savings is for an emergency, NOT a deposit. Its much safer than a credit card, in wether your the person that will get yourself into debt (and lets not start this "i can manage my finances" talk).
You wouldn't possibly know if you would have a job in future times.
The whole point of having a solid amount of savings is to support youself/family.
So if you have disposable income why bother with a credit card? Especially when you have very supporting family.

It does seem a little pricey when you're only earning 900, not that you cant do it, I'd just prefer to have money left in the bank and live in a £500 house/Flat then save the rest for a new house etc

To live comfortably at a young age (i.e no kids, living in a flat etc.) I'd say you want £300 a week at this age split with someone else.
With 300 a month left, you won't be able to save anything for car issues/clothes etc.

I understand it's ideal having 3 months wages tucked away for emergencies but it's just unrealistic for someone moving out into their first home.
I've recently moved in with my mrs so after paying the deposit, buying all our furniture, booking a holiday and countless other expenses my car decides to blow up. I need my car for work so anyway I just bought a cheap runner on credit card and will pay it back over a few months. I really don't see the problem and if you're the kind of guy who can't resist going out on the piss on the credit card then maybe you should evaluate if you're mature enough to move out.
