saving up for a second car what do you guys think about the clio 172 phase 2

Good cars, nicer place to sit than a saxo and its faster than a vts.

I loved my 172 Cup, wasn't the cheapest car to run but the cost was justified by the pace :).

devilsadvocate
29th June 2012, 06:44
I have just bought a 200 and it's a world apart from a VTS.

I was a passenger in a 172 a few years back and it was a decent little car, better than a Saxo anyway.

I'd personally get a 172 cup if I was buying one, better suspension and handling out of the box plus you get scene credits

I must say i sat in a ph1 172 in the scrap yard today (everything intact, for now) and i felt soo tacky and cheap. Its all grey and shite imo.

Shame i like the exterior of them..

must admit the ph1 imo has a shit interior, the ph2's look better, however my mum had a ph2 1.2 extreame little bits like the glovebox lid not sitting right when closed annoyed me lol even my saxo plastics all look in place

a clio sport is something ive always wanted, but i speant more money on the saxo and glad i did, ive had a go against a 197 and pulled on it im not saying a standard vts woudld do that though, i have put about £3k in to the car in the last year so id hope it would! lol couldve bought a clio sport for that lol

but for the price (as they are quite cheap now) you cant beat a clio sport

Carlvtr88
29th June 2012, 13:37
I like the look of them. But ive kinda of set my heard on a type R. But TBH, anything that rattles less than a saxo cant be bad lol.

adamm
29th June 2012, 14:05
I really don't mind the interior of the ph1 well mine has 182 interior except the dash but I don't mind the dash, I can see why people would hate it though its not the prettiest.

Trophy is the best of the the lot imo but you pay for that or the 172 cup if you want it to be more raw.

Racing blue is by far the best color of the lot.

Gandi699
29th June 2012, 14:18
Colour is subjective I prefer the metallics myself - Trophy is great but apart from the excellent sachs suspension its pretty much a normal cupped 182 with optional parts, oh and also the v6 spoiler which means the hatch doesnt open fully.

adamm
29th June 2012, 14:21
I always say if you can afford the trophy get the trophy because the extras you get are well worth the extra money not forgetting the recaros as well.

Agree colour is personal preference.

Ph2's look far better than a PH1! The interior of a PH1 just feels budget.

Love my cup, buy one, cheap as chips now. Paid £2300 for mine.

Make sure you get one thats had the belts done recently at a specialist such as BTM, Diamond Motors, Rentech, Birchdown etc.

Gandi699
29th June 2012, 14:33
In all honesty though, once you start modifying them the 1*2 range are all very close. Theres video on youtube of a 172 cup more keeping up with a trophy on track

No nothing about them but i thought id take the chance up and sit in whilst it was still in good nick and it did nothing for me at all. :/

Driving it might change my mind but id hate sitting in it everday. Much prefer my saxos interior and thats saying something lol...

Edit; so it would have to be a ph2 if i was considering one.

If interiors are important when choosing your car then I'd suggest something rather than a Clio, phase 1 or 2- they are both shit.

The ride and engine make up for it though easily :).

Nik_L
29th June 2012, 17:47
Why do people rave over the trophy so much??

I would rather save a shit load of cash and buy a regular 182 and just fit some fancy seats and a good suspension upgrade and still have some change. Thats if the reason for the above is just for the seats and suspension.

sorry but even a trophy would need a lot of money to be an evo chaser

even leeroy will admit that and he loves clios lol

two drivers of eqaul talent and the evo would own it cosiderably

only way would even get a sniff would be a really short track with very tight bends where the evo wouldnt really be able to use its assets to their potential

just becasue you see confident drivers on track going past evos and scoobs etc.... doesnt mean a confident evo driver wouldnt show them how to go on on a different day

too many ppl try to get big powerful cars and cant drive them for shit as its too fast for their ability

I have to agree with Leeroy. The trophy is an awesome motor. My mate Sam works at BTM Coventry so is developing parts in his and it's just incredible.

Custom springs, & cam etc. Super sweet! Love them!

Im not disputing that they aren't better than a regular 182. Both cars will still have tired, worn old suspension though. And from what i gather, the Sachs units need regular-ish rebuilds.

Im saying buy a regular 182, and use the extra cash to buy a decent suspension kit, and i bet it will out-handle a trophy on its circa 8 year old suspension.

Maybe 7/8 years ago, yes. But not nowadays if the suspension hasn't been rebuilt. Even if it has been rebuilt, you could still buy say the Gaz kit, fit it to a normal 182, and have a better handling car with a shit load of change.

Sachs can last well over 8 years if looked after.

No Gaz kit is going to get anywhere near a Sachs unit pal

I've always liked them, the 2 litre lumps.

Coming from a clio 1.4 sport I don't know if I could ever go back to renault again.. It was utter shite.

I have no experience of GAZ suspension, im just going by what Gibbo has said on previous page.

In what way do you mean looked after?? Rebuilt every so often is the only real way to look after suspension unfortunately. Its a wear and tear item which is subjected to harsh use. Only other way to look after it is to not drive the car. Quick search shows that rebuilds are required from as little as 16k.

P.S, remove the blinkers.

Personally I like the PH1. I own one too with the lighter alloy bonnet though its a non runner at the back of the unit now - some electrical issue I cannot be bothered to fix. Might break it for parts or put some interesting engine in at a later date...

Only Ph2 worth getting is the trophy but its a big jump in price for a negligible gain in suspension performance.

They all make a nice hot hatch for everyday use. Ride quality is a step up from the saxo's, overall spec is better, but still has french build quality.

adamm
30th June 2012, 11:42
^^ Someone with taste ;)

You not a member on cs anymore Kam? My ph1 needs a load of money spending on it really and I'm loosing interest too :(.

KamRacing
30th June 2012, 12:09
The RS Ph1 stood out as it was significantly different bodywork to the run of the mill versions. The ph2 simply is not as extreme a difference.

We stopped our trade account on there as all people were buying were Eibach springs (low margin items). I felt it was a lot of effort to sell other items against more well established traders despite often having better products. Its £200 a year to be a trader so we thought we would spend the money and time on a few other things instead this year and see what happens.
I still do discounts for CS members though :D

We still are working on a number of cool products though like top mounts that are cheaper and better than the AST or compbrake version.

To be honest I loved my Clio when it worked, but I simply do not need it now so there's no interest in fixing it. (it broke same time as my twins were born and I bought an Audi Estate). Its a car thats very easy to drive hard and fast and works well on small roads or open carriageways.

I'm going to be working on a new supersprint exhaust system in the next month or so as well.

Thought I would throw my opinion in. I really like the MK2 Clio's. They look lovely and with the right mods have a great motorsport look. Handle well and built a lot better than most french cars.
The engine though (F4R) is the worse NA 'performance' engine I have ever driven. It feels so lazy and dull, relentless power. Just feels a bit like a diesel engine to me. They can be made awesome as cam'd and throttle bodied ones rev like they should have from the factory. Expensive though.

However, saying that, I have driven 197's and 200's which use the same F4R and drive amazingly well. The updated touches and maps obviously made a big difference.

hard_corejoeboy
30th June 2012, 12:42
Whack the twingo engine in it! Bags of character if a lack of performance.
Mine howls like a banshee and all ive done is removed the airbox bung :)

Skoda vrs any of them

KamRacing
30th June 2012, 14:43
the engine has VVT so its very linear. Responds well to a good exhaust and induction with an ecu remap. Add of course the ported inlet manifold!

hard_corejoeboy
30th June 2012, 15:14
My twingo has vvt but its got a bit of a flat spot is this the same in clios? Like there will be a brief pause and then you get the proper power after say 4k rpm.
