View Full Version : I have joined a gym!

For someone who used to be very active, I have become very unfit. Not necessarily overweight, but unfit and unconfident.

This morning I decided to do something about that - so I revved up my car and went to look round some local gyms to find out how much of my hard-earned cash I might spend joining, and what I'd actually get for my money. Being a "gym virgin" I started off, rather appropriately, at Virgin Active, which absolutely blew me away; it was all funky and colourful, and the facilities could be described as "The Ultimate Gym" - it really was amazing. It was also rather expensive...

Secondly I went to Cannons Gym, which, frankly did not impress me. The facilities didn't match up, but it was marginally cheaper. The thing that put me off though was the atmosphere - it was full of very serious people - skinny people too, and it would be the sort of place where people would look down their nose at you, a mere mortal. That was a "no" then...

Thirdly I went to Fitness First, which didn't look like a gym at all, (the reception area was more like a traditional pub-restaurant,) but the other facilities were good and the people were very friendly, however there was no swimming pool. That sort of ruined it for me; there's no point joining a gym if you can't use a swimming pool...but it was the cheapest option...

When I got home and talked about it, it became clear that Virgin Active was the clear winner - the atmosphere was very motivating, I didn't feel like a freak for being a size 12, and the facilities were not to be beaten. I am now an "Off-Peak Member" on a monthly contract, so I can go between 6:30am and 3:00pm weekdays (although I can get there at 2:55 and stay as long as I like,) and 3-8pm on weekends. It's also directly between my house and my uni campus - very convenient. I shan't tell you how much I am paying, because it's quite a lot - but if it makes me happy, it gets me fit, and it keeps me out of trouble, surely it's worth it.

I have jumped in at the deep end (although not literally yet) and I'm going for my induction tomorrow morning, at 7:00am.....so I'll let you know how I get on! Prepare to see a fitter, happier, more motivated, less-flabby Lozi! :zainy:

well done, i am also at virgin active and i love it there, sometimes you do still get the odd arseholes who gather rounda machine and talk shit rather than work out but its life. you should have joined the 12 month contract so you still all the benefits of full time membership, but you are tied in for 12 months. another bonus of it is that the price you are on now is fixed for life.

best of luck with your training and dont be one of those who stop going after the initial buzz has worn off, it has to be a lifetime hobby from here on.

Thanks for the advice k9 - i looked at the 12 months membership but, having never been in a gym before, i decided to start off on the monthly plan to see if i liked it - i'll probably go onto the 12-months after a couple of months :)

theres a thread saying how much people pay for the gyms, i cant imagine its that much...

i pay 45 a month, someone on here pays 60 a month

but then is it really that expensive if you go 3/4 times a week, boosts your confidence making you feel good about yourself and life, helps you lose weight, and gets you fit and meet new people

dont really think you can put a price on that!!!

Matt, you're damn right. In my opinion i've made the right decision and it's wholly worthwhile. I've only been 3 times (in 3 days lol) but already I'm dicovering muscles I didn't know I had, and I feel energetic and less lazy!

Leckie, the gym was the only option for me too - I tried running and I didn't have the motivation. Now there's money involved, and I'm paying for a gym, I'm going to bloody well use it!

'Treadmill, exercise' arent the kind of words that Jay has in his vocabulary. 'Weight' he can only relate to a pork chop. Good try though Viper

On a serious note though well done for taking the step to joining a gym, thats often the hard bit. Once you get into it ull soon get into a bit of a routine and feel much better for it :)

Thanks v much to whoever gave me the good rep for this thread :Y:

I am really enjoying my new lifestyle change, feeling better and happier already. I am finding that taking my ipod along also helps to motivate me even more, takes my mind off the fact that my knees/arms/arse is hurting... Hooray for exercise!
