Picked up my new trials bike last night, quite impressed and good impressions even after the short ride last night seems quite responsive. I've never ridden a 20 so despite being able to ride it seems strange and will be a learning curve as the technique for riding these tiny toy bike things seems different to riding 26s.

So far all I know about the spec is:
Koxx Benito Ross XTP short #163
Koxx forks
Rob Warner pedals
Magura HS33 rear brake
Try-all rear rim (ground)
Some shittty front disc, to be swapped for my spare Hope mono-mini trials
Koxx blox rear pads
Rear magura booster
Don't know what freewheel or hubs
Onza front rim, to be swapped for a try-all double walled rim
Maxxis Creepy Crawler front and rear tires

So does anyone else here ride or used to?

I used to ride a 20. Had soo much fun on that bike

Yeah used to. I stopped purely because being too tall and my center of gravity too high for comfort, then I switched to mountain biking.

You'll need a bit of time to adapt because that is fairly lower, but you'll have a lot more of attack and control on jumps.

I rode a 26" but frequently rode a mates 20"

Literally so much fun, can just throw them anywhere

Had a few mates who rode these for years.. The monty's were always the nuts! Used to always come and mess about where we were riding street bmx

Tbh I can't see it lasting long, I want another 26 already but this was cheap so figured it'd be a good place to restart.

You forgot to buy a seat.

Original, suppose i best get used to this again. however it'd actually help if there was a hole for a seat to go in.

The mrs was on it last night and kept trying to find the seat.

Nearly as good as the bloke that said to me 'you haven't got a chair?'

Hahaha, don't worry, I know there isn't supposed to be one. ;)

I just can't see how it's practical... I prefer being able to sit down on my bike.

Well in no way is it supposed to be a practical bike!

No, it's practical for its own purpose a seat just gets in the way.

Exactly, I meant it's not practical as in you're going to go for a quiet little family ride round the local village green

I had a 20. Onza blade. Was good fun but I never got very good tbh. It's too easy to watch Danny Macaskill and think yeah I'll have a go at that. I was too big for it (6'2") really so sold it a few months back. Bloody good fun but extremely difficult! I've been riding bikes since I was 3 fair bit of mountain biking and rode motorbikes for years so have pretty good balance. After my first minute on my trials I was on my back with the bike on top of me hahaha! It looks easy, it isn't! Lol

I rode bikes for 9 years... both competitively (Lycra wheyyyyyyyyyy)

and bmx..

then I got a licence, drove everywhere.

Then I got a motorbike :y:

Cool story broooo

You're not supposed to go for a bike ride on it.. That's like saying a bmx with only 1 gear isn't practical

How can you build up speed on it though?

What actually is the point of a trails bike?

smiith
28th July 2012, 12:26
Not built to go fast, built to challenge yourself on obstacles..

http://i.ytimg.com/vi/8N-H00YQJlE/0.jpg

ya get me blud?

Same with a bmx... You don't pedal for speed in skateparks, you do 1 or 2 pedals, then pump out of the curve or the ramps to pick up speed..

It's a TRIALS bike not a trails bike, the point is to ride in bicycle trials... Natural obstacles like rocks, man made obstacles like benches/buildings, purpose built like trials courses or skateparks.

They are geared to be explosive!

They are a lot of fun, we had one to play on in the bike shop I used to work and the places you could get on it was really funny. My friend could ride them very well whereas I was more into bmx, he climbed a 4 tier bike rack on a one- ended up about 15 foot in the air balanced on something narrower than the tire

I'll stick to my road bike thanks. Lol

Glen, i realised they weren't built for speed, didn't mean to imply that :) It was more along the lines of saying what's the point of it if it can't go fast :y:

Okay, a way you will understand.. Its like the Harrier.. About technical ability, not pure speed.. Still, saying that, they are silly fast, but hardly moving compared to some fighters!

I'll stick to motocross now.. Why stay on the road, when you can fly through the air!

Talking of bikes.....

I currently live where the Olympic road cycling is taking place and it is amazing how many people fancy them selves as pro road cyclists today. Annoying the fuck out of me.

Also above, I think he meant what's the point in a sarcastic way. I should hope he knows what the point is being in the bicycle trade (although for all I know he is a till/phone monkey lol.)

I wouldn't be so sure as he called it a trails bike, which can be a number of different things...

In my world trails bikes are used for riding dirt jumps, whether not be 20" / 24" or 26" :).

Yaaaawn, I guess you've found them cool for ages as well yeah? Always into it before it got popular lol

I'm a fan of anything on two wheels, I think I have about 8-9 bikes in total road bikes included :).

Yeah I meant it sarcastically. I know why people use them but in no way does it interest me.

I am in the bike trade and I'm not a till monkey. LOL. I work for one of the distributors, not a retailler :y:

I have never needed to know what one is so don't know the difference between the two.

Pretty sure someone did that this year at the TdF!

Understandable, trials and trails are often confused and both very obscure specialist forms of riding and bikes.

needs hydraulic brakes!

Tommo87
28th July 2012, 22:02
Yeah the K&N sticker didn't go unnoticed.

I think I'm going to experiment with V-brakes on this as a lot of folk I've spoken to are now moving away form the hydraulics and back to the V setup due the the responsiveness of them and with better compounds for pads there are Vs that are out performing hydraulics, and if I want hydraulics I'll ride my bike lol.

iVTR
28th July 2012, 22:12
A decent set of V-brakes are absaloutley fine

Cheaper and easier to replace

Just might not be so effective in the wet, but even then, mainly down to user skill
