View Full Version : Never thought I would say this

I currently own a Golf 1.8T with winter pack and the comfort is great and was a previous owner of a Mauritius Blue VTS.
Never thought I would say this but I really miss the Saxo tbh, even though it was such a bumpy uncomfortable car and arguable unrealiable, the fun factor in them is something to be desired.
Anyone else feeling this way?
The issue I have is that I'm struggling to justify to myself buying another one.
Cool story bro

There have been many people that have 'upgraded' to something else and then go back to a Saxo/106 soon after, whether it be buying one again for a daily or buying one as a 2nd car for the fun factor

Oddly enough though, my 5 year old daughter (coming on 25 btw) prefers my saxo to my golf as well.

I beg to differ, I genuinely think that the saxo and 106 are two of the best looking original hot hatches around with the 106 slightly ahead

What have you got as it's replacement?

This is something i'm worrying about. I'm thinking of upgrading towards the end of this year, but i reckon i'd miss the saxo too much. I'm going to try and upgrade to something equally as fun though.

I miss my saxo like hell! Yea it was always rattling and falling apart but it was fun and cheap! (Except for the insurance).
I went from a 1.2 punto to a VTS and I thought I was in the fastest car around my area haha. I will buy another one day and track it.

Yeah insurance is the only part I don't really miss, I paid more on the VTS than my current car.

Wat? You have issues...
I went from VTR to E30 318iS, to a 90hp diesel passat, back to the E30, then to an S60 D5 and not once have I missed the Saxo enough to think about it for more than 5 minutes and I'm almost certain even if it was a VTS and not a VTR, I wouldn't have missed it... quite literally the only thing they are half decent for is getting to 60 in a reasonable time and I suppose the handling isn't too bad... all this bollocks about them being cheap and easy to repair is something I quite honestly couldn't care about as none of my other cars have cost that much either... I miss my first car more, a 1.4 Rover 25...
Seriously, they are average cars at best, and are shit if you need room, comfort, mod cons or anything else remotely decent... Suppose if you like modding cars to the hilt, then they are good, but not for much else. I'd say every other car I've owned since has been a far superior all around car in terms of day to day driving and comfort etc.

I'm not doubting that, the golf is very good for mod cons, comfort and I don't feel the need to hoon it around everywhere. The Saxo however retained the fun factor that the golf didn't even though it rattled itself to bits.

My 106 GTI was just as quick and much cheaper to run as what my Mini Cooper S is but Mini feels a lot more grown up, is a lot nicer to drive. Plus when driving long journeys there isnt that nervousness feeling something might break.

This is very true.
I had a 106 GTI (coincidentally in China Blue) before the Saxo and other than the fact I had been ripped off with it, it was rapid and a slightly better car.

I agree. I've had alsorts from and escort RS, vx220, golf GTis, octavia VRS and I miss saxos that much I've just bought a Vtr as a cheap runaround/project.
So easy to work on and like you said, the VTS was really the last of the traditional hot hatches.

My gran lives 200 miles away so i make regular journeys and that feeling (people with saxo's/106 will know) you hear a ping sound like a bolt falling off and think, what was that? Suddenly you find the wheel has heavy vibrations and the car is weaving all over the road lmao!

i did exactly the same, had a mk2 VTR which i loved, sold it and bought a 6L cupra.
i miss the saxo so much, i miss the way it felt to drive the most, and the fun i had in it. but i think, what it is, is that i dont miss the car, i miss the times i had in the car, cruising through the night just because we could, hanging round on car parks in cheap french cars when i was 17/18, that sort of thing. thats why i loved the saxo because i was more 'in the scene' back then
as much as i love it, i'd never go back, the 6L is a lot better overall, and i dont feel like a kid when i'm driving it, its more of a mature car and creates a more mature presence.
though everyday i dream about getting a mk1 vts as a project car, one day soon when i've got some finances settled, i will :)

After owning 6 106/saxo's there is no way I could go back (still own a diesel 106)

For me..
There's nothing else I fancey that:
Will be as quick
As reliable/unreliable dependant on which way you look at it
Have as much fun in
That I like the look Of
Cheap to fix and mod
Cheap to insure (believe it not all declared its £500 cheaper then a standard Octavia vrs)
be as economical
And still fall into the category of what it owes me

m11ler
2nd August 2012, 10:47
The only things thats starting to put me off about them is how unsafe they are.
Especially as i now have a hour and half round trip to my new job in rush hour traffic, compared to my usual 15min drive at 3pm lol.
Wouldn't mind keeping it as a toy and getting something a bit safer for the commute, but that would probably work out just as expensive as buying something just as fun and safer in the first place.

I do sometimes miss my old saxo. But I soon remember how much it cost me to keep in nice condition.
I bought a vehicle that was older, bigger, and slower, but it costs me a fraction of what my saxo cost to run, and can be used for so much more than my saxo ever could.
To get my kicks I now pay £25 for a day at my local pay & play site or go on a jolly to a green lane and have a lot more fun than I ever had in my saxo, plus I don't have the risk of getting into trouble for having fun in my truck.
So yes I do miss the saxo a little but I'd miss my truck a whole load more, if it were a choice between the two.

I think the fact they are cheap and cheerful is the most appealing thing about them, going back a few posts and reading how unsafe they are is one of the main reasons for me selling mine!
I enjoy a spirited drive every now and then, but when your up against your hot hatches of today ie Corsa VXR, Clio GT, Citroen DS3, Mini Cooper S, Mitsubishi Colt. All of those cars are as equally powerful, if not more powerful than a VTR/S, however the safety rating, the comfort, the gadgets etc.. Are above and beyond a Saxo.

I hate the 1.8T bandwagon anyway, the golf is a boring car to look at unless you throw thousands at it on wheels /stance ect and they are slow as stock.
If you didn't have a young daughter I'd definitely suggest selling it and opting for a VTS/GTI lol
I've been thinking of buying another 16v in the near future as a toy, probably a 106 though.

The only one I'd have is in a TT so I look reasonably good.
Don't get me wrong I know they can be made fast for straight line use, my pal had a 240 bhp Cupra with K03s turbo and god knows what else and it kept up with my 300 bhp Focus ST to a certain speed because it was so light...
I just think they all look so fucking dull & kiddies think they are amaze because they are a cheap way to get in to Turbo cheap 'VAG' ownership.

I don't want to look like a kid who has just passed his test when I've been driving a few years now. I don't want to look that immature. Audi's aren't that bad, maybe a little boring but solid cars. And more-so looking like a drug dealer, I'd play with a BMW probably, atleast less child-like than a Saxo.

The only thing that never ceases to amaze me is just how much stick the Saxo gets, on a forum dedicated to Saxo's.
I just don't see some peoples common sense. OK, some of you have grown up and moved on to your VXR / CTR / TYPE R / ST / MPS / M3 etc.... where to be honest, I would expect you to have "upgraded" as you're probably on a better wage, family, wife who won't allow you to own 1 etc...
Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but these "machines" especially the R and the S are like goldust to younger drivers who fancy something to tinker with, throw around on a track day, something that won't break the bank and fairly easy to maintain with torx bits and the problems queries section.
We all appreciate cars and is 1 of the main reasons we come on the forum, but some people need to take a step back and realise that this forum is dedicated to Saxo owners, so there's no need to constantly rip them for it.

last time i drove a saxo my mates mum laughed at my car :(
plus i like my car to be a statement about myself and my personality, and a saxo just doesn't give the right statement.
Why?Don`t feel guilty about owning a saxo mate i`m 45 & love driving my saxo its fun.:drink:

Completely agree with the first poster, I've driven lots of so called "better cars" but always kept the Saxo as my 2nd / toy car.
But just to keep the fun I bought an XR 106 for my daily, it's an s1 1.4 so light and feels nippy enough, does 60mpg, cost me £375, had 140,000 on the clock, still runs perfectly & took me to the ring and back without burning a drop of oil or missing a beat. I do alot of miles & It's comfortable enough for me & cheap to run. Can't ask for any more than that....
P.s to top it off we also have a 106 1.5D in the family, done 185,000 miles and its STILL on the original clutch!

Agree it's all of the above but I'm a RWD pussy and just preferred the predictability of the VTS
that's a fair comment, I was just genuinely interest as it has many of the qualities of a saxo, light, fun, no comforts etc.

I beg to differ, I genuinely think that the saxo and 106 are two of the best looking original hot hatches around with the 106 slightly ahead
I hate curvy looks, the MK1 saxo looked decent, mk2 is horrid!
I think the Clio Valvers bulky square wide arches, and bonnet vent made it look awesome!

i constantly look at new cars, currently looking at a maxda 6 mps but im stuck in a catch 22 situation i will never be able to sell my saxo and i mean never! But at the same time i want a new car.
Obviously i dont mean they are the best things going and will never 'upgrade' but it will be kept in my possession untill one day (finger crossed i dont) it gets crashed,
But im coming tfrom a different direction though as im keeping it for sentimental reasons, and i agree with manu if you dont like it then your just one of those people that dont like them end of, im the complete opposite i put up with it because i love it, i dont care how much it rattles etc.
And i also seriosuly dont care what i look like driving it, again if you do care then the saxo isnt for you end of, i actually get praise by people telling me that they are impressed by it as they can tell im not the typical saxo owner, I had one guy on fb slate me slate my car because he knew i had a saxo i added him as a friend and he suddenyl changed his mind and said my car is "cool as fuck" (his words not mine lol) after he saw the pics of it so i like to think that i am doing the saxo reputation some good, on a one man crusade! :panic: ha

Exactly this. Obviously someone could read that and not fully understand what you mean but like I have already stated, when I start college I'll be mixing with kids who are just passing their tests and I don't want to look like one of them. I don't care too much what other people think, a lot of people don't appreciate my current car but then I find some people who adore it. I just want something a little maturer and respectful that is all.

Yeah in many ways they are Saxo-esque. Both lightweight, both about 150bhp both completely impractical in many ways but the vts always put a big smile on my face, whereas the VX always had me on edge.
Both fun, in their own ways but driving a Saxo is like watching a no brainer movie and the VX was like a film you had really think about

I cant see me moving on from my VTS anytime soon. Its fun, reliable, rot free (mine is) etc. Decent ones are getting harder to get hold of too.
Dont care what people think either tbh. Why should i?
Safety thing is always at the back of mind but thats about it.
edit; and no wonder you're getting bored. Its a mk4 golf :homme:
edit 2; theres older people and little familys ive seen run about in 3dr desires etc so it cant be that bad. Lol.

If you drive your family round in a saxo you need help - death traps.

Yeah, suppose it boils down to what you can afford. :/
Can you afford to move onto another car and all that jazz.
I know id rather have a baby in a safer car but the above would knock that on the head for me and many others most likely.

Completely agree with some of the statements in this thread, drove my mums new corsa today there well built cruise control air con can hear the radio no rattles etc but it was just boring. I honestly just wanted to be back in the sax personally felt the sax was easier to drive. I drive all types of cars at work new audis, peugeots, porsches apart from the porches no other car feels as fun to drive.
Although the sax may have issues from time to time which get sorted it is a real fun drivers car.

I feel like this, I got my celica after wanting something bigger and faster and well to be honest im regretting getting the celica! Its more comfortable to drive, its faster and the sound system in it is brilliant but it misses that one thing. The 'fun' factor. Im tempted to get rid of the celica tbh. Not sure weather ill be going back with the saxo but I think small hatches are more my thing!

I miss my Saxos too. Maybe once my house fund is sorted I'll buy another as a weekend runner and something to take things apart on.
Girlfriend is currently looking for a cheap run around at the minute, but the reliability of my VTR put her off so my plan of getting her to buy one won't work :n:

Yeah n/a 2.2 147bhp. Not sure what the 0-60 was but it felt quick although no quicker than my old vts when I had the cams in
I'd have another as a summer posing machine but would have to be a turbo.

5.6 seconds to 60, they arent dog slow, higher up the mph they suffer a little.
Quick enough, it isnt a straight line car anyway.
Could always go s/c na, or over to the darkside and stick a s/c c/c honda or audi in it ;)

I'm confused, what do people find fun about a saxo?
The fact that you could die at any moment whilst trying to keep them in a straight line at 70mph on a dual carridgeway.
I got a right adrenaline rush the other day when a kid in a Leon FR couldnt even get close to my back bumper, just thinking the wheels could come off at any moment.

My first car was a Saxo Eastcoast, loved that thing! First car kinda love anyway...
Sold that a year or so ago, and bought an Astra Mk4 SXi, was so nice to have something remotely comfortable, but it bored me to fuck! Pined for a saxo :( so decided to take an accident in the Astra as an excuse to do what i should have done in the first place... Bought a VTR lol :) Never looked back, and am finally happy with my car again.

I don't miss the saxo.
I had a 2001 VTS and yes it was great fun, but as standard the backend was a little light (a lowered Mk2 Golf completely obliterated me in a twisty-road showdown) and there was always a curious rattle under the car which 4 different mechanics could not diagnose.
I can see why people miss the fun factor, but I found that perfectly replicated in the Civic Type R I also had later- similar revvy N/A powerplant, no real driver aids, decent chassis and superbly nimble- while being much faster, much more stable, much better driving position, better gearchange, better sounding and infinitely better built.
The saxo was alright back in it's day, but I wouldn't have another.
