Saxo VTS engine knocking..?

My car seems to have developed a loud tapping/knocking noise which appears to be coming from the top of the engine (possible cam issue) although I'm not ruling out the bottom end.. Performance etc seems to be fine but the noise is noticeable and when the bonnet is up it sounds like Ronnie Coleman is swinging a sledge hammer about inside. Oil is fine etc. Just wondered if they are renown for anything going that it may be. I am expecting the worst to be honest.

Checked exhaust at the front isn't blowing or anything or the cat? Cause I was worried last week my engine was making a loud noise but luckily was just a hole in the cat lol
