View Full Version : Do I really need an amp?

I was wondering how much difference an amp would make to my speaker power. They sound pretty good up to a certain volume, around 3/4 of the head unit output then they start to get a bit crackely. Would an amp allow them to be louder and/or clearer?

I have:

FLI Comp 6" - 255w Peak - 85w RMS
FLI Comp 1" Tweeters - 165w Peak - 55w RMS
FLI Integrator 6x9 - 375w Peak - 125w RMS
Sony CDX-GT450U - 52w x 4

Thinking about getting the FLI FL900s 4 Channel amp to power them all, would I notice the difference?

Oh and an Edge EDB12 sub - 900w Peak - 300w RMS

I take it that your sub is active with its own built in amp?

My old car had standar speakers (front and rear) but as soon as I dropped in an active sub it seemed to make the world of difference!

If you amp up your front comps, tweets and 6x9's with a 4ch amp then I guarantee you that it'll blow you away!

Your head unit probably outputs 4 x 50 watts but that's not RMS.In reality, the stereo is putting out approximately 20 watts RMS (ish) so an amp putting out a true 50 watts RMS would make a ton of difference! Guaranteed!

I know that some people don't like 6x9's, but when I was 17 I had a Nova SR 1.3 and we did things old-Skool. 6x9's were the 'in thing'. I remember having standard front speakers, a Philips Dap-300 2 ch amp to run my rear 6x9's and a secondary MOSFET Caliber amp to run my Jamo Sumo Series subwoofer. The moment I heard those rear speakers amped up it made my hair stand on end!......immense stuff mate!

Yeah it has its own built in anp. But by the sound of that it looks like I'm getting an amp then!
