View Full Version : Your chances of winning the lottery - in perspective

its late, i'm bored and like to think...
so what are the chances of winning the lottery?
say around a 1 in 14million chance approx.
In my head, I'm thinking of 1 second over the course of the next 24 hours.
If i were to ask you, what second am i thinking of?
(eg. 3:45am and 57 secs)
- that's around a 1 in 86,000 chance of being correct
So, expanding it a little, if you were to choose 1 second over the course of the next month/30days.
(say for example- 14th aug, 10.09pm and 14secs)
that's a 1 in 2.5million chance of being correct.
Which means, your chances of winning the lottery, are about the same as you choosing the correct second over the course of about the next 6 MONTHS!
Ok, so what about the euromillions lottery? What are your odds of winning that?
say approx. with a 1 in 120million chance.
Which put in perspective, means you'd have to choose the correct second over the course of the next 4 YEARS!
(for example- 26th June 2014, 5:53am and 43secs)
So whose playing the next one then? :P

wow terrible odds... this has made me look at other stuff now :p
Believe it or not the below actually happened to me in poker tournament!!
I could barely keep my face straight!!
Odds of getting a royal flush in poker on first five cards dealt: 649,740 to 1
This has happened to me twice, which seems right as I have played golf for around ten years now on a regular basis
Odds of getting a hole in one: 5,000 to 1
Still no closer to the lotto though!!
Here's a fitting odd for the moment...
Odds of winning an Olympic medal: 662,000 to 1

For the chance it's worth it.
If your luck changes and you win it will change your life forever.
& You gotta be in it to win it lol.

and thats why SOOO many people play thinking like that, plus the best slogan ever because they know its practically impossible..
get £52(years worth)
put it on red at a casino over and over, 10 times and youll be much better off or equal to playing the lotto

The only way to win in a casino is to own the casino. Everybody else is more or less shit out of luck.

Not strictly true. If you get lucky and walk away at the right time, you can make money. You need luck though.

I play the lottery through work each week. I don't think we'll win, but I'd be pissed off if everyone else was sharing out a few hundred k or a few million so I play just incase haha.

Why waste money and feed the fat cat when you can spend it on the lotto? I play the lotto to have a chance to win something but ultimately the money goes to a good cause to help the nation. Mind I only spend £2 a week ;)

There is a mathematical way of winning every to e at roulette. Google it then try on a "free" table. It works.
The biggest thing though is remembering the levels and number of spins to be in for a chance

more likely to die on the way to buying your lottery ticket than actually winning it lol!

Wow, that is ridicoulous when you say it like that! still gonna try and win though!
Although, researching into it your exact chances of getting all 7 numbers correct in the Euromillions is..
3,125,000,000
over 3 billion... :(

what's a £1 worth anyway? less than a loaf of bread for a chance to win a nice sum of money!
LSOfreak
10th August 2012, 08:59
so if someone were to spend £1 every week
£52 a year
£520 every 10 years, its unlikely they'll gain a profit over 10 years from the lottery.
i bet someone who doesnt play the lottery will be better off after 10 years

I just put £10 a week in my online poker account on a friday, withdraw whatever money is in there leaving £10 to start with on each friday :y:
Poker isn't all luck, so it's the only gambling I do really as I'm clueless about everything else and always forget to do the lotto

Quoted from a different website...
Winning the jackpot of the Euromillions lottery isn’t easy. You need to correctly pick 5 main numbers from 50 and 2 Lucky Star numbers from 11 in order to scoop the top prize, and the odds of you doing this are just 1 in 116,531,800. That sounds difficult, and to illustrate just how slim the odds of winning are, many people have compared them with the odds of being killed in a number of unlikely ways. For example, someone living in the UK...
• Has a 1 in 10,000,000 chance of being killed by lightning.
• Has a 1 in 3,000,000 chance of dying from food poisoning.
• Has a 1 in 2,000,000 chance of dying by falling out of bed.
Such miserable statistics might make it look as if you have more chance of dying in a grisly fashion than winning the lottery, but in actual fact this observation is deceiving, because the published odds of winning Euromillions (1 in 116,531,800) relate to your chances of winning one particular draw.
Grisly death odds don’t relate to any particular day. For example, someone in the UK has a 1 in 10,000,000 chance of being killed by a lightning strike. But that is over the course of an entire year. With 365 days in a year, the odds of anyone being struck by lightning on one particular day are actually 1 in 3,650,000,000.
The same principle applies to food poisoning and falling out of bed. The odds of you dying from food poisoning on one particular day are 1 in 1,095,000,000. And the odds of you dying after falling out of bed on one particular day are 1 in 730,000,000!
When you compare Euromillions odds with these specific odds for various grisly deaths, you can see that you’re actually far more likely to win a lottery jackpot this Tuesday or Friday than you are to meet your maker in any spectacular fashion.
Of course, that still doesn’t mean you will win by any means, and the odds of you doing so are still incredibly slim. But it’s nice to know that the odds aren’t nearly as frightening as many media pundits would have you imagine
So not as extreme as 3 billion as previously mentioned!
Anyone put Euromillions on tonight? £148 million jackpot means it makes sense from a gambler's point of view. (£1 x odds of 117million = £117 million plus your quid back) an extra potential profit of £31 million.

try telling my mum that. All you get is..... " You've gotta be in it to win it..... " and...... " Well some people win it ".
Which is true but, i'm kinda with you. Ill put a quid or two on, but some people blast a tenner a week thinking that it increases their chances..... Well, yes and no.
