for anyone that has any idea of which any of these bikes are, which would be best in your opinions, Yamaha's WR125x or Aprilia's SX125?

Wr are 4 stroke
Slow as feck in A 125
But the new 125's are all 4 stroke aren't they.. Have aprillia launched a 4stroke one yet?
Defo rather have a 2 stroke but they take a lot more up keep

yeahh WR's are 4's but seem alot more torquey? and i know that aprilia do a normal 125 SX and then a SX125 FP (Full Power)

Don't think they've launched a 4 stroke yet
125 strokers are shite mate, you'll be sick of your life after a few days lol, you will with the 2 stroke tbh haha, but a lot more fun on a 2 stroke, if your mate got one it would make you want to cry when he zipped past you
Does it have to be out of those two?
Edit- yeah ktm would be a better choice, sometimes harder to get parts, but the main bits.. Any good dealer should be able to get fairly quick

Why don't you pass your test and get a BIG bike.
Rather than deciding the tiny differences between 125's

That KTM will be a laugh when riden properly but take it steady or in traffic and you'll be fouling plugs and choking it up like there's no tomorrow. They're not designed to be used as a road bike, although they're road legal. Also fairly often on the rebuilds on those iirc.
I wouldn't want a 4t 125. I had a DT125 and with the power valve pegged open (was pre servo) it had absolutely no bottom end whatsoever but once it hit the 'band it fucking flew!

I'd get the yamaha.

ive had a few kmx 125s over the years as well..if you can find a decent older one theyre pretty nippy for a 125 road bike if you play with the power valve

id go for the sx125 mate, 2stroke beast fast but costly if it breaks :P go for the wr if you want a trust worthy day to day bike :P
hainey
13th August 2012, 20:06
id go for wr125. 4 stroke it will never break down much realiably then 2 stroke an dosent need as much upkeep as two-stroke.. down have the accelration as two stroke but still id go for 4 stroke

Hello mate.
You're 17
Thats old enough to do your test
How much you looking to spend?
A 2 stroke will likely have been ragged to death and ready to blow up (and obviously illegal if not restricted - may aswell ride an R1 with L plates)
The WR is expensive for what it is
I have a honda XR 125
Perfect learner bike IMO, 4 stroke, easy to learn on.
I'm guessing with your budget there is more than enough to pass your tests and buy a bigger bike :y:

in terms of finding parts and so on, dt is a very good idea
uses the same piston and rings as many other bikes, so should never be a problem getting bits for them
lots of knowledge and after market parts for them...which because they were so popular are fairly priced when opposed to others..

I loved my DT! Mine was pretty old though ('89) but was in white/red and I've NEVER seen another like it. Was nice to ride too!
While I was learning I had the power valve in the 'closed' position, lots of torque but only 12hp and ran out of power at 6kish. After I passed my test (only 8 days after my 17th lol) I opened the valve up to give the full 26-28 hp. Then it was bloody good fun! Shit at hill starts though, I remember trying to pull off on a slight hill (3-5% at a guess) with the revs at 3k ish, slipping clutch in first and ended up with the throttle to the stop and it was crawling along, bit of clutch to get the revs up and it was off on one wheel!
Also, as I didn't worry about dropping it I could piss all over my
Mate on his RS125 all day, we were dead equal up to 80 too! Cornered well considering it was on knobblies or maybe that was my 17 year old invincible self taking too many risks lol!

14th August 2012, 19:28
old ones were the best mate..with the manual power valve
my best kmx was an 89..just looked like a kx as it was a hybrid of parts lol
quickest 125 ive been on for the roads was my NSR italian import, full power
nippy for a 125, more reliable then an rs by a million miles
Carl-h
14th August 2012, 19:33
Yeah I loved the manual power valve! Even though you lost a stack of low end power it made it feel so quick when you opened it up lol.
Don't see many kmx's about at all nowadays. Same can be said for NSR's as well I suppose. My mate bought one to replace his RS but never got round to getting it on the road. His RS was quick when it worked but it let him down so many times. He either had a lemon or was doing something wrong.
Saw 2 mito's having a little race the other day. The sound and smell really took me back. I'm tempted to get another 125, possibly a DT after this thread but I think I'm looking with rose tinted specs and should perhaps leave it lol. Wouldn't be a patch on the 'beef I have now but I just bloody love 2 strokes.
Looked at getting an RGV 250 (RS250's have flew up in price and I don't really wanna pay that much) but there's next to none about.
blackie_2k5
14th August 2012, 19:39
yeah kmx and nsr are rare these days, hardly see any 125s around my way anymore actually, too expensive for ppl these days
i only had the nsr last year or year before??..bought it off a mate for a laugh to get me back on the road..quickly remembered they werent quick enough ahah
but was a bit fun for a month or so, been a while since id been on abike properly :(
the smell of it was mint though..it had the "proper" 2 stroke smell...only certain bikes get the right smell :D
might have a pic somewhere on this com.. 2 mins (nothing special..was a shed tbh, just a bit fun haha)
edit- rs are so unreliable..the engines are made of toffee, ppl say "get on thats been looked after" makes no real diff, they require regular rebuilds like most 2 strokes

You can ride a 1000cc at 17... It just will have to be restriced to 33bhp for the first 2 years.
Id personally do your full test and get a DRZ400 if you want a supermoto.. Or get anything like 250/450 crosser and road legal it.
But out of the choice, MX125 for fun, and Yam for everyday.

cant this be a bad idea though, as crossers are ofcourse geared for offroad, so using it as a daily can surely shorten its lifespan? or can you just re gear them and thats that?

You have the KTM? What's it like on the road? I imagine you need to 'clear it out' regularly lol.
I had a 450 'berg, now on a 650, on another level!

Plugs only ever sooted up once. Never had any problems but i thrash it around rather than commute etc as its just a toy really. Amazing bike though! Very light and fecking quick (ok so not cbr quick etc but for a 125!
Oh its also got a different sproket on as it was a bit too front end happy on the original!

As a daily yeah its a good idea to change its gearing, wheels, tyres etc..
But as a sunday blast round the back roads, would change a thing lol
My mate has a crf250r for off road atm, its up forsale so he can get a crf450 and make that road legal so he can ride to the motocross track lol
will take more looking after, more maintance but all worth it for the fun.

Yes you can, in fact I would encourage you to due to the changes in the motorcycle license tests in 2013.
Don't bother with a 125, especially not a super bike style 125, they look ridiculous with thin bicycle wheels lol.

Ultimately, a 125 2t will treat you how you treat it.
Ride it without caring for/about it, it will seize up, cost a small fortune to fix after leaving you stranded when you really don't want it to.

*21 for DAS at the moment I believe it's going up to 24 Jan 2013.
Along with only being able to do your test at 19, and being restricted to 46BHP till you are 24, and then you have to take another test to remove that restriction.
Fuck that.
Oh yeah and if you're younger than 19, i.e 17 - you're fucked. I'm sure I saw something about 2 years on a 125... did'nt really look though.
