Another day, another question.
Does anyone know about Fly Off Handbrakes? I was talking to a guy yesterday about my handbrake relocation when he mentioned this. Apparently it's a button on the dash attached to a master cylinder that can operate the handbrake?
Can't find a lot about them online so thought I'd see if any of the wizards on here could help.
Any information at all would be appreciated.

Yeah normally it's a button on the dash attached to a master cylinder that can operate the handbrake! :y:

Eh?
A fly off handbrake works in reverse to normal. You hold the button in to set it.
You release it by simply lifting the lever and letting go. Hence you can use it for handbrake turning without it locking on like a traditional handbrake.

^ Yeah that!
I've always thought that a flyoff handbrake was a handbrake lever that required a twist to lock it in place. If you just pull it up and let go it drops again, hence "fly-off". To lock it to pull up the lever and then twist the handle to make it hold that position. It's normally done with hydraulic ones as far as I'm aware.

I think the manner in which it operates can change, but in principle it's just the reverse of a normal one - IE, a normal one pulling up by default puts the brake on and locks it on. A flyoff handbrake (however operated) by default doesn't lock when applied, unless you do "something" else (press button, twist etc). Technically my hydraulic handbrake is a flyoff one as it doesn't engage on anything, unless I put a little arm down to "lock" it. Not something you can do one handed though!

I've got a fly off button on my mx5, it basically allows you to drop he hand take without having to press the button in. The button is removed and replaced with a bit of alloy with a catch mechanism, which locks it in the pressed position.
When you want it active you simply press it like a normal button, and it locks. Then when your done being a hooligan you press it again and it works like a normal handbrake would :).
Cost about a tenner, there's a bloke who makes them on Nutz. Alternatively an inch long piece of cable tie with the fat end does EXACTLY the same thing when jammed into the right place, and can be removed with ease after use to.

i went on a rally day and drove a subaru with a "fly off handbrake" but all theyd done was push in the botton and put a self tapping screw through the top. which in my eyes isnt too bad as its easily removable so can get around MOTs and can be used during races/rallys but disconected while parking on a hill haha
