Hi guys, just wondering if anyone had any information on a situation my girlfriend is in. Yesterday she went across a junction not noticing a push bike going down the road. As she got across the junction the bike hit the back of her car. (obviously she made a mistake but she has only been driving 3 weeks) the guy was fine but he's not demandin 180 pounds to repair the bike, it wasn't in great nick in the first place so
I don't know whether he is taking advantage. Anyone know the laws for when you hit a push bike?
Any help is apreciated

did he take her details?
he's owed something but whether it's £180 who knows.
ask him for a quote from a bike shop then you'll see his true colours...he was probably going to fix the bike himself for a few quid then pocket £180

That's what I was thinking, he's claiming he wants it for cracked pedals, a new helmet and a fucking brake cable

pay it, far better than him going through insurance.
see it as a learning curve and move on
EDIT: just noticed it was a push iron, tell him to jog on, should of been able to avoid or stop in time

were there any witnesses? if not tell him to do one and deny all knowledge of even being in the area.
I'm sure if it was the cyclists fault he'd be quick to tell you to get lost, and as they don't need insurance you have absolutely no comeback

Yer he was on about the helmet being a 60 quid present!
Also about the insurance side I keep saying to her there's not a lot he can do but shes really upset about it and wants to pay him but tbh she is in college and earns 150 a month working at next I'm gonna talk to him myself cos he's notgetting that much money

Personally I would tell him to run up my ribs. Even more so seeing as he was the one that went into the back of your girls car. Unless he was giving Chris Hoy a run for his medal I cant see how he would do that much damage to his bike.

I know it was slightly uphill also so he cant have been going really fast. She's got a massive scratch down her car as well

Firstly, standards are slipping. Half a dozen posts and no requests for pictures - good job I came back.
Now your girlfriend has a couple of options.
1) Pay the money and hope the guy says no more - there is no guarantee with this.
What happens if he goes to the police and says he was knocked off his bike, GF has failed to report an accident, this will cause her a whole world of hurt.
2) Refuse to pay and hope it goes away.
It may do, but is she willing to risk this - a solicitor's letter claiming personal injury landing on the door mat will really be a poor start for the day. And she will have several years to worry about the letter box - how many times have you been asked "Had an accident in the last three years?" - Her insurance company will also not be too impressed if she hasn't reported it.
3) Inform her insurer that there has been an accident and let them sort it.
Informing them, but not making a claim, will increase her premiums.
Up to her really, if you want to pm me some pictures I may be able to give more in depth advice.

If I were you I'd pay the £180 and be glad he's not trying to claim of her insurance and getting the police involved for driving with without due care and attention
The fact shes been passed 3 weeks means nothing when you nearly kill a member of the public
