It would not do much good is what it would do.
Go and get some Total 75w80 from Citroen, £10 for the 2 litres needed last time i went.

why not just use proper oil?

Just to throw a spanner in the works here.

Personally I wouldn't do it though, get some decent 75w80 in there as to specs

Lost of brands have lost of diff ideas and spec. For the sake of a few quid why not just change it to the right stuff. Safer

funny suggestion.....but a shit one at that lol, gearbox oil is pretty cheap tbh, i'd rather pay £10 than whatever it may cost for the repairs/cost of a new box!!

I've used and suggested to use expensive redline gear oil in rallycar gearbox. Though have used also standard api4 75-90. If it is standard use, probably it would work some time without much issues, but it is still wrong oil.

Have you ever smelt gearbox oil & compared the smell with engine oil?

There are many additives to gearbox oil that makes it more sticky not just how thick it is, it gets thrown around all the gears & is designed to stay there rather than just dropping off like engine oil would.

But here is also a logic that some oil of the wrong specification is better than no oil at all, so if at 2am in the morning, I had lost all my gearbox oil, I'm 20 miles from home & the only oil I have available is 20/50 engine oil, I'd put it in to get home, then drain & refill with correct stuff later.

Mini's share the engine oil with the gearbox. Personally I'd like to keep my 20CB90 box in decent shape so I run Millers CRX NT 75w90.
