View Full Version : Driving in the middle lane on motorway?

Right just a curious question, driving home from milton keynes today down the M1 the 4 lane bit. I was in the left hand lane with nothing in front of me, lane wise for about 3/4 of mile. Yet there were people queuing in the far right lane because some cunt was sitting at 69 in the middle right lane :wall::wall::wall::wall::wall::wall::wall::wall::w all::wall:. . . . Now obviously undertaking is "illegal" but it proper winds me up. . can anyone shed some light on why people do this, even if you do it yourself! I've just gotta know haha

Sometimes you just have to 'undertake' ive done it a few times on the A19 due to faggots driving in the wrong lane too slow i.e 55mph/60.
Dont go hating.. i care less of your thoughts.

I sit up their arse and flash them to move over, when they don't move over (9/10) I over take them with a unfriendly hand gesture.
I think I spend more time undertaking then I do over taking. The Motorways are a great place to practice.

if theres enough room for me to undertake then theres enough room to pull in, as jeremy clarkson said they should be taken outside and shot in front of there familys :) first rule of the road i learnt was keep to the left

i had a worse hate when doing 3-500 miles a day, when waggons insist on overtaking on a dual carriage way even round a left hand bend and you end up sat there for mile upon mile:wall:

Would you sit in the middle lane for a mile if the inside lane was free?
Many people don't understand that the rules of the motorway is Keep Left! Lane 2 IS an over taking lane but not a cruising lane but many people see lane 3 as the over taking lane and think its okay for them to clod along in the middle lane and for everyone to go around the outside. Morons!

I personally think its a security thing they feel safer in the middle lane. But yeah was just speaking to my dad (used to be a traffic cop) if he'd of saw someone undertake someone doing under the speed limit he'd be more inclined to stop the slower driver.

Personally, I think its more dangerous for someone to sit in the middle lane and for 3 lanes of traffic merge into the lane 1, a over taking lane (Speed adjustments will occur, closer distances, more touching the brakes, likely hood of traffic jams)

No your so right, if everyone used motorway lanes as there supposed to there would be far less accidents, brake usage, ques etc etc etc. . All because some wanker can't turn left!

I've noticed alot of stupid amounts of Dewaoo's and Hyandi's being Clod's lately. Followed by Audi wankers and BMW tossers doing 71MPH in the outside lane thinking they rule the road.
Did the M1 really need 4 lanes from J10 to J13? If all these morons pulled over then i'm sure traffic would flow alot smoother and no need for another lane.
christoph
23rd August 2012, 20:30
i reckon they made it 4 lanes because the traffic was bad, but only because clods made it bad. I even have a picture of my phone of it i've just realized! ha. Thats how much it winds me up. But its the same everywhere. . . Don't get where it comes from though, you don't get taught to drive that way

I'm 15 minutes from J13 and used the M1 to get to and from work when I worked in London. It wasn't 'busy', it was the fact that morons would sit in the outside lane because clod's would hog the middle lane. More and more people went round the outside (http://youtu.be/YVkUvmDQ3HY) and this caused what I said in post #23

Absaloute scum of the earth. I see it most days on my commute. Around 70% of the time the driver is multi-cultural.
I can't stand it, fucking idiots, I usually undertake if it's safe to do so, indicate out and carry on with my journey making them look like a tool. But they are probably so oblivious to anything going on they don't even fucking realise.
Often feel like slowing down and indicating left to right but don't as it could hold traffic up even more / cause them to do something cuntish.

i dont know whether anything came of it but reported a driver to police the other day for sitting in the middle lane cruising at 60 with 3 kids in back not belted, jumping around dont know if passenger was belted and driver was too busy looking at his phone to realise he was holding up the m62, police seemed intrested to know his kirkless private hire taxi number off the back though

On American freeways people pass you from any lane, there is no concept of outside, middle, inside lane. Everyone just passes wherever there is room, nobody gives two shits.
Bad trans-Atlantic influence.

Agree with what most have said. For the past few months I am having to drive a fair bit further to work then i normally do. If i miss traffic I can do it in about 1:15. But come rush hour its closer to 2 hours :S But its not because the roads are that busy. Most of the time I just get stuck behind people sitting in the outside lane. I understand they move out to get past the trucks. But when don't they pull back in after. Or at the very least speed up to the speed limit :S

Overtake them, then go in the outside lane and slow down so they overtake you, then overtake them correctly using the inside lane, then go back to the inside and let them overtake you again and repeat this over and over again.
They piss me off too and I like to make a point of staying in the slow lane then swerving to the inside lane leaving a few meters between me and the lane hogger, then swerving to the outside lane again. They usually get the point, if they dont then im amazed at how dumb they are.
Taxi drivers are the worst on city duel carriageways though. Once on the motorway I was following my mate and we were behind a taxi driver driving the exact same speed as the car on the outside lane for about 5 minutes, which is a long time on the motorway, it was at 1am and the road was empty, so I followed my mate and used the hard shoulder.

This pretty much. Undertaking isn't illegal at all.
Driving without due care and attention is - thats what your charged with if pulled up on it, and you'd only be pulled up on it if you did it dangerously tbh.
Someone in the middle lane at 50mph undertaking at 70is fine. Swerving round them tho is naughty ;)

I understand your point! Totally agree.
Although most the time im too busy worrying about my fuel gauge or something to even consider being in the outside lane, lol!
How ever, on them rare occasions when i have enough fuel to drift into the outside lane, sometimes if some cock is right up my arse, ill happily sit @ 70 mph, because that is the legal speed limit. :)

I don't like middle lane drivers, but I remember driving in the slow lane and the ruts were so bad in a small car that I had to revert to the middle lane. It was an exception but it can happen.

Yes i do, and?
So your hoping other driver's do something, to make it MORE dangerous?
This can do two ways...
Speed limit is there for a reason. Fact of the matter is 95% Of people travel TOO close on motorways. Fact. This really annoys me when people sit yards off my bumper, especially when they do it back -_-

But on a three lane motorway the middle lane is also classed as a fast lane. So sums that up!

Taxi drivers after midnight are real pricks... fecking love giving them abuse. Especially as they think they own the road at that hour. I'm sure Danny VTS know the a453 quite well... feckers on there do my nut in.

I thought any sort of undertaking was illegal
blackie_2k5

undertaking is only illegal, as said, if you do it for gain..eg you swoop out then immediately back infront
or if your dangerous in the motion you do it
if you cruise out at safe speed...past the car your underaking..keep it going a bit longer, and safely move back over you should be fine

Exactly this. There is no law specifically outlawing undertaking. It's covered under driving without due care. So do it sensibly not aggressively and you'll be fine.
If I come onto an otherwise quiet motorway and someone is in the middle lane doing 60mph, obviously I don't go across into lane 2 then lane 3 just to overtake. Just do 70mph down lane 1. They frequently get the hint.

copper sails up behind you youll get done..or if spots you from the side when speed checking
and its daft..thats what the hard shoulder is for..if you cant control a car to the left safely off the motorway in most cases you shouldnt be driving IMO
if your in the middle lane and car dies..and then traffic appears..your going to lose momentum daft quick.... and still be in the middle lane
with probs no proper brakes and no power steering..you telling me thats safe?
yark it left if in slow lane you dont have to worry about other cars or killing other ppl

One of my spacker mates made this excuse up to me as well...
If something spectacular does happen...
a) You're closer to central reservation where cars are going much faster
b) you stop in the middlelane, cause a traffic jam and fuck up my journey.
if you think your car is that likely to fail in such a way that you drive in the middlelane, you need to take it off the road.
hate middlelaners so so so badly. Wish I was foreign and had diplomatic immunity so I could just t-bone these fuckers into a hedge.
