Hi,i'm going to Uk soon and i was wondering if installing racing steering wheels, racing seats, carbon fibre parts and so on is road legal or not? i know in Germany you can homologate several parts trough the TUV but how does it work in Uk?
Thanks in advance.

Your can pretty much do anything to your car in the UK, just need to tell your insurance to declare them.

Yea, make sure your insurance cover any modifications and you're good to go.

Its one of the last vestiges of freedom we have left, for how long we are not sure..

there are sound limits regarding exhaust decibels and you cant have wheels with an offset allowing them to petrude from the arches but apart from that, i cant think of much else.

Some mods are legal, others are not permitted. Such as removing airbags, steering wheels etc.

Can remove airbags if you want
Provided you remove all systems and traces of them

dont you need them all back in though for MOT? I thought that if the car came with airbags then it needs them come MOT time? Im probably wrong

If its not there is cant be tested
If you remove all traces then it's fine..if you steering wheel has a place for airbag and it's not there it will fail.. If the light comes on and goes off.. And you have no bag it will fail

Cool, where are you going?
and to be honest, don't worry about the police, it's not like Italy, if I go into a ZTL over there I get fined via post!, we don't do anything like that with international visitors, just keep under the speed limits and don't be silly and you should be fine.
Also, beware of UK drivers, it's not like italy, we're more likely to get in your way than out of it

Probably in London, yeah i will drive carefully there and keep under the speed limits, maybe the "worst" thing is to get used to drive on the left instead of the right side, thanks for the tips. ;)

Wheels can stick out past the arches, tyre tread can't.

Another question, how much pounds per liter does the petrol costs there? here in Italy about 1,8 euro per liter.

It's about £1.40 a litre by me, that's 1.76 Euros I think?

That's the UK conversion rate, it's a bit better from the other side. The british pound is really weak against the euro

Some parts such as seat belts, tyres, lights and so on do have to be approved to BS or ECE standards. But once there approved as long as there fitted properly its free game. Also any big chassis and you to have to get the vehicle inspected and approved. For example if you cut a bulkhead out or mount the engine in the rear when it was once in the front.

Italy is weird though!
Some places fuel is cheaper on a weekend, and it's cheaper if you pump it yourself rather than getting a minion to do it!

Yes that's right,i guess the price is steady there ...
Anyway,in Italy you can't pretty much do anything,no racing sets,no carbon parts,no modifications to the engine,no steering wheel that is different from the original,no spacers and you get it,let's say that anything beyond changing a bolt is illegal.

You can't get an MOT on a car without a cat, however lots of people manage ;)
a lot of people just have a spare one for MOT time and swap over though.
