View Full Version : Freddie to box... lol

Just read this, Andrew 'Freddie' Flintoff has announced he is pursuing a career as a professional boxer and hopes to make his debut in November, Manchester.

Fair enough if he had a fighting background or gave himself a longer timescale to train but 2-3 months at 34! Well, he could fight Kimbo Slice :homme:

Upper body strength and stamina would be pretty awesome seeing as he plays cricket. I wouldn't want to underestimate him tbh

only he retired a few years ago and stopped training totally.

Good luck to him though, clearly something he wants to do for a bit of fun

hes a big lad and a natural athlete ok against many he wont stand a chance but even one fight as an undercard against another lesser known boxer will do them both good, especially financially.

i have always like freddy even tho i dont like cricket, just seems like a proper sounf guy and comes across so genuine.

people take career changes at all ages, just because he chose boxing doesnt mean he will be completely shit at it.

He's 34 and wants to have a professional bout with 2-3 months training having never boxed before and already being out of shape. To say he wont be completely shit is an understatement.

Fights tonight! Hope the cunt loses, making a mockery of our sport, by thinking he can turn pro with no amateur experience.. An the years of hard work we put in to fight he thinks he can do it in such a short timescale..

You suck flintoff!
Although his opponent is bound to be carefully picked, hope he's fighting a no bouter with amateur experience.

You go and fight him then! I wouldn't like to seeing some of the punches he can throw. Yeah ok, he might be diving into the deep end but if its something he has always wanted to do and hes put the time and effort that it deserves then good on him.

I agree his opponent has been carefully picked and he will more than likely win. I was watching the program on Sky last night and its amazing to see how far he has come in a few months. His body size and muscle mass is amazing compared to being a chubby pie eating and pint downing machine.

I hope he wins and I hope he shows all the other retired sportsmen out there that by showing willing and desire your ambitions can be fulfilled if you try hard enough. He could easily just lounge around at home becoming a nobody; he doesn't need the money at all but its good to see him moving onto his next sport of choice!

I am sure he mentioned on one of the older versions of League of their own he always wanted to take a step into boxing - Seems a genuine guy, should be good entertainment! He did have a knee op tho and seems to drink heavily.

This..

I would actually happily fight him! As ive boxed competitively for 9 years now compared to his pathetic few months!
Even if he has 2 stone on me!

So if he does win, surely that proves he CAN do it in such a short timescale? I hope he does win just to make you look even more of a plonker.

Whats wrong with someone wanting to try their hand in another sport?

if usain bolt wants to try and play football after his running career, will he be making a mockery of all the professional footballers?

The guy he is fighting looks soo out of shape and not too young either with only 3 fights!!

he is 3-0 but what's to say that he wasn't lined up with absolute shit fighters to get 3 wins on a card to make it sound like flintoff is an absolute underdog...

http://www.contactmusic.com/pics/lf/freddie_flintoff_2_291112/freddie-flintoff-and-richard-dawson-weigh-in_20011902.jpg

I wouldn't get soo emotional over the fact he has only been fighting 2-3months...

He was a professional cricketer and he has made his living from that, he wants to try his hand at boxing then let him! He's trained and dieted hard for it so it seems so at least he has taken it seriously even if it is only for a short period of time!! And lets be honest he represented England in a major cricket match and was pissed up all the time!

He just enjoys himself!!

it's motivated him to get back in shape and is no doubt a massive lifestyle change for the better and helped him financially

A lot of people that are new to training in an area of fighting want to step into the ring and experience it for real....

It makes me laugh though how he was put out of cricket with a leg injury and forced to retire however boxing is obviously less demanding in comparison to cricket so it's viable.... hmmmm

Fully agree with this as per my previous comment. If he wants to do it, let him, hes obviously enjoying it and that is all that matters in life.

He isn't undermining the sport at all doing it in 2-3 months, maybe people are just jealous that they want to be in his position on the big screen in front of tens/hundreds of thousands of people but haven't.

As with the cricket, bowling (which he was a great bowler) takes some serious abuse on your knee and ankle joints far more than boxing. He was a serious pace bowler, with a massive run up to which you slam your leg down as hard as possible to generate force and momentum to sling the arm forward and deliver a fast ball. I used to play a bit of cricket for a local team and bowling only 6+ overs used to seriously hurt my knee. Bearing in mind he would be doing 20+ sometimes it takes its toll on the cartilages and ankle joints :y:

Chavez jr/Senior had no ametuer experience, not exactly shit is he?Roberto Duran, never had much ametuer experience.

Neither did Bernard hopkins, who is the oldest guy in boxing and all time legend.

I reckon he will win this fight tonight. Its not like he is fighting an amazing guy.

We'll have to wait and see, my money is on him getting slaughtered, the other guy has had a very rough life upto now (Check it out), boxing is all he has left to get himself out of a hole. Freddie doesn't have that mind set and won't be willing to go as far.

1-0 lol was a piss poor attempt at a boxing match from both sides. Coddling in the first round slapping instead of punching. Needs to keep to his day job.

As said by David price that would have been a good amateur fight but it deffo wasn't a pro fight.

He's been pro for like 4 years and is going to be 30 soon. How long does he expect to be 'working his way up to world level' for ? Will he be fighting for world titles at 40 odd ? Last 3 fights have been against bums, he needs to stop taking easy fights and step the fuck up.

Tyson Fury, Tomasz Adamek, Dereck Chisora, Eddie Chambers. They would all test him and wins over any of them would bump him up the rankings alot faster than fighting Skelton or Harrison.

Lol tyson fury? He has already called him out! He would smash fury and chisora! Fury has fought worse people than price, so how does that work?
