help, controversial issue

for my first Uni assignment i have been asked to find a 'story' that is factual but debatable ... its a icebreaker exercise to get everybody into a social discussion but i feel it would be better if we discussed something that isnt so widely heard of ie. not the headlines/abortion/animal testing!!!!

I think smoking and driving is just as dangerous as using a phone.. If you drop a fag, you have more to worry about than if you are talking on a phone.. You ARE going to have to look down to find it before you get burnt, or your seats get burnt..

The fact that weed is not as bad for you as cigarettes or alcohol (based on the number of deaths per year directly associated with each 'substance') yet it is only illegal because anybody can grow it in their own home and therefore the government wouldn't be able to tax it and they would lose out on money because people would stop buying alcohol because weed is better.

yeah.... alcohol abuse has led to suicide on thousands of occasions I don't see your point or how one example is relevant to the bigger picture.

you can't just say something in general like, "weed affects people in different ways, with some it causes mental issues so therefore it should be banned".

1. You can die directly from drinking... Alcohol poisoning
2. I don't have any evidence but I suggest more people die from doing stupid things while drunk such as aggressive behavior, thinking they are superman, passing out and choking on their own vomit etc than people do while high.
3. There is no evidence to suggest that weed fucks your head up and makes you go mental... however there is evidence to suggest that drinking gives you liver disease.
4. The lad who went your school - it's unfortunate that it's happened to him but he is one bad case out of a whole population of weed smokers... How many cases of death are related to drink problems in comparison? Again, I bet it's more than weed.

You see, this is a good topic to debate at uni... There are people willing to defend both sides... I never stated that weed wasn't bad - I just stated that it isn't as bad as alcohol or smoking... yet these are legal... so why isn't weed? :wacko:
