1.1 to 1.4 conversion

forgive me if this has been asked many times, but im thinking about putting a 1.4 saxo engine into my little 1.1. is the 1.4 engine any good? and is it just a case of doing a straight swap or not? like wiring etc

I'm in the process of doing this atm. Wiring loom is slightly different, picked up one from a vtr for a tenner, WITH the same ecu plug. . e.g single or triple plug, whatever yours is. As for the engine, yes it goes straight in, same mounts etc etc. Im using my 1.1 box as well. But recommend you buy a 1.4 clutch to handle the increased torque. Only thing else you'll need is a unlocked ecu. Then its a case of lots of shouting and force get do it :)

Iv only ever driven a 1.4, but is there really that much difference from a 1.1?
Why dont you get a vtr engine in it? Its still a TU engine so looks identical, and its quicker, and much easier to source :y:

I'm only going to a 1.4 for insurance reasons. That extra 0.2 cc makes a HUGE difference!

Like i say, there identical. They look no different to a 1.1 or a furio

I know buts that not the point. Not worth the hassle of you trying to claim over your insurance only to find out the engine codes are different.

Seriously, why on earth would they check the engine codes, if its with a high street insurer, this will not happen, ever.

Crazier things have happend. They'll do anything to get out of paying! When my mums golf got hit, she got done over because she had braided brake lines and not normal ones. So shit like this does happen.

I would love to put a 1.6 in personally. As you said its better. . . but hay, make do with what you can!

I have a 1.4 with the 1.1 box on it and it goes like a scalded cat 1st through 3rd. 4k rpm for 80mph sucks though. The 1.1 box is definately geared for round town driving. The 1.4 sx box is much, much longer (in fact, it's the same as the diesel box if I remember rightly)

a normal 1.4 is not identical to the 1.6 (unless you are using an early xsi 1.4), the block is aluminium on the 1.4 and cast on the 1.6. Any copper worth his salt will spot that if you get pulled

1.1 = 60bhp, 1.4= 75bhp, 1.6= 98bhp..... Mine started life as a 1.1 then went to a 1.4 which was the biggest waste of my time (not money as the engine was free) recently ive just converted to a 1.6 8v and its spot on, half decent mpg, has that 98bhp there if you need it and depending on your insurance it isnt that much more expensive. Wouldnt go near a 1.4 if you can afford a 1.6 8v.
