Hello peeps,
I've managed to isolate a really annoying rattle on the VTS - the problem is I can't see how to fix it and wondered if anyone else has come across it.

The rattle is inside the door skin on the hatch - where the fixings are for the hatch support struts. The strut fixes to a "ball ended" bolt that passes through the door skin to a captive nut that's attached to a large metal plate (to spread the load). When I lift the door up to fully open and then lower it slightly there's a "pinking" (highish pitched metallic noise) coming from the plate at the back.

I can get a hand/fingers down to the plate and have tried tightening the "ball ended" bolt, also trying to wedge something under the edge of the plate (between the plate and door skin) and bending the edges of the plate up but none of these remove the noise (which annoyingly happens when I'm driving over a non-smooth surface). The only solution I've found is to remove the "hatch struts" but that's not the solution I want.

P.S. The VTR does not have this problem and the rear hatches are identical but don't think the misses would appreciate it if I pinched her back door - ooeeerrrr misses lol

Any ideas ?????????????

Try some thread lock on the strut fixing ball nuts(each side)Other solution would be to remove both nuts then get them welded in(eliminating any play)Or a slim washer on the bolt each side.

Ta - but the noise is not the bolts nor nuts - I've done the bolts up really tight and they def don't move - it's the stupid plate that moves against the inside of the door skin that makes the noise :(

Could you not pack the channel between the boot skin with insulation foam?

I like that idea Steve - foam type in a can ?

Is it going to be dense enough to stop the noise? I guess at worse it'll deaden it.

No loft insulation foam on a roll, the can stuff wouldn`t be dense enough mate.
