Even if they were armed, there wouldn't have been much they could have done.

something like 9 officers shot dead in the last 20 years. Says it all really.

But do tou think it would make people think abit more, not just with shootings but what a like "petty crimes" like people thinking I do this I might get shot tazzerd.
I think people think what ever they they'll just get a slap on the wrist or a short sentence inside, punishments need to be higher for commiting a crime.
Edit: excuse the spelling I'm on my phone

No. They would probably go on some form of powertrip...
There all on controlling there tazers/pepper spray etc..
We have armed police if the situation calls for it, as said there would have been nothing those 2 officers could have done even if armed...

It's a difficult one because anyone can suffer from some form of breakdown at any moment and if that person has access to a gun then that can bring about dire consequences. (This has happened many times in the army)
On the other hand I do think that people would be more scared of the law if they did carry one.

I'm sure most police are armed with tazers/kosh's in such scenarios...

I'm not sure really, when I was in France a few weeks ago, just seeing armed police at the toll booths and some service stations put the shits up me and I'd not even done anything wrong. Just seeing a gun put the shits up me. It has an effect of deterring people and scaring people, but also puts distance between police and people via intimidation. Is that what people want? I'm not sure. Also, might get trigger happy policeman who get a bit twitchy and use it in the wrong situations. Could lead to the loss of innocent life or unnecessary loss of life.
To be honest, 9 in 20 years is 9 too many, but not that high of a figure. I think it's fair to say that police would really only shoot if shot at, or if there was an imminent risk of being shot, but usually armed police deal with that if they KNOW someone has a gun, if they didn't know someone had a gun, they'd still be shot first before they shot back, in which case yeah the offender gets shot and maybe dies, but you've still got a wounded officer or a casualty.

I live in N.Ireland and its normal here for the cops to carry guns, i think the cops over on the mainland should carry guns givin the amount of gangs running round armed to the teeth.

But they will know that they aren't gonna get shot for a petty crime so it wouldn't take much effect in that respect.

Hit the nail on the head. There are set rules of engagement for any authority using firearms within the UK.
Cant remember the word for word rules off the top of my head but they pretty much say the above.

I'd much rather a limited number of very highly trained police carry firearms!
Police forces do not have the budget to train and equip all officers!!
Another point is that in the states a significant number of police get shot with their own weapons!

Oh i do too, I was just pointing out the lack of intelligence in Americans.
As has already been mentioned, equipping every police office in the UK with a firearm would neither be safe or practical. It would put more strain on the money the police get and to increase that, taxes would go up and everyone loses out.
All officers are suitably equipped for the daily job they have to do and if the need arises we have armed police readily available

Knives do a lot more harm than guns in this country!
A lot of violent crime involving weapons does not get reported by the media!
Certain groups involved have a "tell nuffin" view to the police, which breeds more violence!

Bit of half and half if im honest.. the majority of americans ive met have had serious shortfalls in intelligence levels! Im not saying thats the case for them all, however the ones who i've had the 'pleasure' of meeting seem to have saliva and tongue marks on their windows.

If the police are issued guns, more people on the streets will get them. Standard thugs will get them for more protection etc

There would be uproar if the police shot anyone.. Even if there was a threat of been shot themself..
That case there has just been where the lad was shot dead a few years ago in the back of a car, but there was firearms in the car, and they say he shouldn't have been shot..
Could have a whole debate over that.

Yes and no, theres enough paper work to fill out just to nick someone. Imagine the amount you'd have to go through for shooting someone.
Loosen the Health and Safety / Political Correctness rope around this countries neck. Then send all police out doing what they should be (on the streets) not signing paperwork and then maybe so.
Lets face it. Who they gonna shoot in their offices.
Plus, We've just cut funding for officers.... Who's gonna pay to arm them all. Oh yeah, tax payers. Having said that, if it means the little cunt who kicked my wing mirror off my car " cuz e is a bad man " gets popped a cap in his ass i'd pay that any day lol.

Useful comment.
I refering to the number of stabbings in this country vs the number of shootings (which would include knee-cappings!)

Guns - No
As a side note Taser should be standard issue and most likely will be within a few years.

Agree, they should all have Tasers, even just having the red dot on your chest will make you stop.
The only people that seem to be against the police are the ones who do wrong, I've never had any bother from the Police, wouldn't rely on them at all either though and think a lot of them shouldn't be policing.
