View Full Version : What other cars - Sports Saloons

haha ok, kinda like the what car should I buy thread.

I'm looking at a new car to replace the Integra.

Ive gone through a phase of wanting an Evo5, but my budget only caters for the lower price band of Evo5's. 4's are out of the question.

I have no decided to get a cheaper car for the time being, budget up to 3.5k I dont really want to spend anything more than that.

I want something that has a 0-60 of under 8 seconds. Preferably a larger engine that is more relaxed for my commute of duel carriageways and also 4 door.

Ive got a couple of specifics some you might think are abit meaningless:

2002 onwards as I find this catches most newer shape models, anything older and they look dated imo
Leather Interior or half leather
Under 100k
4 Door Saloon or Coupe
2.2L or higher
Silver or Black
Not Vauxhall, Ford or Rover
Manual

To give you an idea of what I've been looking at:

BMW M sport Coupe 325's E46's
Honda Accord 2003 Type S (Love these)
328I Sport E36 abit of an exception to a few specifics, but they kinda retain a certain style I like.

So going off these pointers, what other cars do you think are out there that are available.

Thank you in advance.

Yeh Accord Type Rs are highly appealing for what they are, but their appearance doesn't really turn me on lole, prefer the newer shape Accords.

Leon Cupra R? Always like them.. Stage 2 or 3 would have decent power..

They're nice cars, but I would rather a saloon or coupe.

Saab 9-3 Aero 2.0t??

Good shout.
I like these but the interior for me lets it down, the dash reminds me of a caravan. Also heard of problems with these cars.

Im quite particular, and im finding it hard to think of anything else :(

The Accord Type S does look like alot of car for not much money.

The Saab dosn't really have much issue's tbh, cracked bulkheads i think are the main problems. Parts can be cheap as they are just a Vectra underneath, but in no way do they drive like a Vectra. Old man had 1 and it was trouble free, and an awesome all round car. Can see what you mean about the dash, shit load of buttons.

What about an M3 Evo saloon??

Tommo87

Accord Type-R is a winner as it fits all criteria.

Or a newer shape Type-S with the K24 would be nice and these have a shed load of aftermarket support too, and lots of power to be had just from K-pro + Type-R head.

didnt know they were vectras underneath! Yeh I was looing into them a few months ago, cracked bulkhead which wasnt too bad but there was something that was quite costly. Might reconsider them.

M3 Evo crossed my mind, cheap to buy, but expensive to maintain.

Talk to me about the K24 please, as in some options for power etc. I know they have a nice chassis. Might focus on these more so.

Citroën Saxo VTS.

Alot of parts are toyota IIRC? So won't be all that much, unless you are looking for salvage parts, where someone could i suppose push a price up, since there wont be that many in scrappers..

If you like something with a bit poke, forget the IS200. Good, smooth cars, but without the Aero kit and wheels, they look a bit dated. Altezza RS200 is a good shout, 220bhp from the Beams engine. Sadly they go for a pretty penny.

93 2.0t or the Aeros are absolutely awesome.

Dads got one and it's had no issues, thing pulls like a train, looks good standard but even better with some subtle mods. Can be remapped for a decent gain too :)

Decent car, just not so keen on the appearance. Like with the Accord, theres a model which is to the same spec of the Type S but it doesn't have the extra kit, and I wont even consider that model due to its looks despite it being the same engine, interior etc. Same with the BMWs, it has to be an M sport. They just have that bit extra.

This car might end up being long term too depending on what it is.

Possible! Had a phone call back from a dealer just a minute a go asking for my reg to give me a value on my car. This 325 is VERY well priced, might even put it straight back up for sale.

Listen to this man, he knows his stuff lol.

Plus a top example of an ATR will set you back probably no more than £3k, in fact I know of a genuine minter up for £2800 just had plenty of work done and he is selling as he wants a Landy to go off-roading with his mates.

They are also no slower than a DC2 in any area or so it has been said, apparently Leob took one around a track and posted a better time than he managed in the DC2. I know when I get another I'll be goin the OEM spoiler delete option just for the stealth.

The figures are wrong, I got 40ish at least on a motorway and around town 32ish so not bad on fuel.

Yeah a bloke I know runs one with a G23 in it and its an animal, he runs in the VTEC challenge.

As for comfort the seats are so adjustable and comfy its untrue, did Liverpool to Edinburgh and back to Blackburn and was comfy all the way with no numbness or back pain plus I enjoyed every minute even on the motorway and especially on the A and B roads.

Giraffe
21st September 2012, 12:05
Was gonna say, the figures looked to be making it out to be a devil on fuel. I'd be seriously considering buying a standard one and despoilering it for the price they are. I was just a bit concerned that the seats would be over firm and a bit odd shaped. I like the look of "normal" seats... Only thing that's ever put me off them!

Tommo87
21st September 2012, 12:57
Really? The seats are much comfier than the EP3,DC5,DC2 or EK9 seats which all make me ache and feel too tight on me and I'm relatively skinny yet the ATR seats felt amazing for a factory recaro seats, wider and comfier yet still mega supportive with adjustable leg supports and an inflatable back support means comfort for everyone.

Genuinely I'll put myself on the line and say that the ATR is one of (if not) the best all round performance saloons on the market for the prices they fetch and punch well above their weight.

Nik_L
21st September 2012, 12:59

I drive a Volvo... I've not driven a Honda yet, or anything with proper sport seats for that matter! I'm not massive, but definitely not skinny, so those seats do look intimidating. I'm used to driving around in an armchair. Only comparison I can think of is either an MG ZR's seats or a Clio 172. Both seats in those cars felt very restrictive around my back and sides and I didn't really fit too well in them, always had the same worry about any cars with sporty seats really!

Tommo87

I will say that indeed.

Brilliantly supportive Recaro seats, decent enough ride quality and a general feeling of great stability whatever the situation.

I'm actually going to say the chassis is more talented than either of the Civics I subsequently owned.

The organic steering feel of the ATR is possibly the finest I've felt in any car to date, and I've driven many, many quick motors. I almost cry when I remember that steering feel.

Test drove a new Focus ST while I owned the ATR and neither me nor the salesman could undersand why I was so completely dissapointed.

I'd buy my old one back tomorrow if I could.

I like these but the interior for me lets it down, the dash reminds me of a caravan. Also heard of problems with these cars.

Im quite particular, and im finding it hard to think of anything else :(

I have a 07 1.9TiD, it has the new chrome gm dash with the dials and not buttons, also the SID has been moved from under the windscreen to the dials, looks much smarter.

Also as for saying its your misses car, I also remember you saying it was your car.

So after all this very helpful info, what car you getting?

Mochachino

Unfortunately i had to sell it for a ridiculous some of money to get this:

http://i785.photobucket.com/albums/yy135/alig_90/269945_10150303690913619_592778618_9137425_1442688 _n.jpg

as i have a 40 mile round trip to work and a baby on the way so wasn't really practical with buckets etc

So its a 1997 Peugeot 106 XR 1.4

Came with 51,000 miles and FSH and bought for £700

Currently insuring it for £650 fully comp with personal accident and breakdown cover

Tax is £130 a year

So initial thoughts:

It has TINY wheels (skinny 13" tyres LOL) so its epic in the wet hahaha lift off oversteer FTW!

Its not that slow really feels a tiddly bit slower than my old VTR but feels a lot gruntier low down than the VTS did.

Grandad interior needs sorting with rallye or gti items.

Currently getting around 55-60mpg which is brilliant!

Anyways so far i have added S2 Rallye decals and sprayed the wheel trim covers bianca white purely to give it a bit more colour and less old manish.

Future plans are to pull the black wrap krap off the pillars and doors and replace it with carbon fibre wrap.

Really trying to shake the itch to 16v it and whack on some decent suspension making it a real 5 door wolf in sheep's clothing hopefully i should do as its just a cheap DD.

Any comments/suggestions welcome!

Why are you going to so much effort with your 'misses' car?

What fucking ever! Unfortunately google does not have that roundabout on their maps.

What you can't see is how the roundabout goes back on itself at the exit.

I guarantee you 100% if you tried to do that faster in that car you would undeersteer hard off into the kerb on the other side like an awful lot of people have.

This is why most people take that roundabout at about 10mph.

Watch the video again. Watch where i turn in and the back wheel comes about half a foot off the floor

Bear in mind its a completey standard 106 with 13 inch wheels and ridiculous tyres. There is no way round that roundabout faster in that car.

I think you are probably one of those people that say

'yeah we went round a roundabout in my mates scooby at 70mph'

Bollocks ENTERING a roundabout at 70mph and then understeering to 10mph doesn't mean you went round at 70

doesnt sound like just having alaugh to me.

And Jay Honda Accord Type S, going to get a DC5 LSD fitted to the gearbox, decent sound system, decent tyres, mugen spoiler and possibly some recaro's thats what id like to do, if it happens. But yeh Accord Type S. Got a few people interested in the Integra now.

Carl-h

When I looked into evo's the servicing isn't actuall that bad. Isn't it just oil changes every 6k or so? Obviously mounts up at a main dealer but I change the oil in whatever car I have every 6k anyway. Okay there might be 'box or diff oils too but they're not difficult. My bike has an oil change and valve adjustment every 150 miles hahaha

I think for the car your getting that isn't bad at all! Obviously if your doing 30k per year it's a bad idea but if like me you do 10-12 maybe it's not too bad at all really. Depends who's doing it and how much it's costing I suppose.

Only thing stopping me from having one is the insurance. I'd sell my bike car and a kidney and still work my balls off and save like fuck if I could insure one for under 1k. As it is I'm not paying 4k a year on insurance haha.

Also, going by how much petrol his gets through I'd be looking at around a £5k fuel bill.

Nay chance.

Wish I could get insurance like that! I'm 21 too. What sort of miles do you cover? Probably cost me a fair bit in fuel but I wouldn't mind in an evo haha! Literally my dream car alongside an R35 GTR

My average for the last 4 years has been 15-18kish.

That's only going to go up in the near future, will be diesel time when that happens.

Yeah that's a fair few miles for an evo. Ideal scenario is to have one as a second car but I've got my bike as a toy and do hardly any miles at all on it. Never seem to find the time. Would be the same with a fun car, and why not have a caterham then?

The servicing costs of an Evo is what made me buy an Impreza STi instead a couple years ago, otherwise my heart was set on an Evo 6 GSR UK spec. Just running it as a daily would be painful, service intervals were tiny and genuine parts cost a lot.

I'm sure you'll find a nice one.

A mate has a 2.4 Exec with the same engine, it's an absolutely lovely car.

Yah, just waiting on the balance to be paid off on mine then im off to view one that I have had my eye on. There are 2 possible cars on the market at the moment. Hopefully their descriptions are accurate!

Got a few plans for it:

Evo 8 Enkei Wheels
Decent Tyres
Yellow Stuff pads
EBC Black discs
BC Coilovers
De-chrome
Double Din HU
8" sub
Component door speakers
Hopefully some recaro recliners
LSD

LSD

Things do usually seem better with the addition of LSD.

Good luck finding your new car, hope you get what you want. Btw just have a look at the Mugen catalogue as to what is available for these.

haha ;) LSdiff

Mugens nice just expensive.

Mugen Grill and rear spoiler look smart. Aswell as their body kit, it almost looks like a high spec OEM model which is good, not an in your face obvious body kit.

if you take a serious look at evo ownership you will be surprised at the running costs, my 600 bhp 8 got better mpg than my old SC'd EP3

dont get sucked in by the whole philosophy that they are tempermental and require a specialist to change oils, on top of that they're worth bollock all these days anyway

That be the point of the Mugen stuff for these motors, they seem to have gone for an almost OEM+ to it, yes it is expensive but the fit and finish is always top quality.

Agreed, I dont think its as bad as people make out, just the transmission is a higher cost to maintain really.

Yeh it looks spot on, will be looking at some parts from them.

Just waiting for the balance to be paid on mine then go to view one, just phoned them again and they're holding onto it for me.

Let me know what it's like, as I've had these in mind for a while but never knew anyone with one.

what makes you think the transmission is a higher cost to maintain? yes clutches are expensive, i think my last triple plate set me back around 1600 but i ran a 6 speed box and standard rear diff for over a year without a problem. i did hear many stories of them detonating at over 500 bhp but i didnt have an issue and when i did drive the thing it got death

from my experience of building and running a high spec one i'd say they are a strong all round car and with the correct maintenance and respect they are no more troublesome than any daily beater

As in servicing them more regulary and parts cost if anything goes wrong like you just said. Also I know a few people that have built a few Evos and know them inside out that have said that.
