View Full Version : VTR engine 'Pinking'

Anybody have any idea why my VTR engine would be what I know as 'Pinking' underload??

When I accelerate there is this metallic tapping, not light tappets or manifold blow though.

The EML came on a few weeks a go with a P4020

Cheers

Dear Saladdoger.
I think the " knock-sensor " maybe fitted in the middle of the back of the
engine, underneath the inlet manifold.
You may want to try and undo the bolt that holds it to the engine block,
and fit a copper ( sump plug ) type flat washer, to space the knock sensor
away from the engine block. This may reduce the " sensitivity " of the knock
sensor.
Failing that you may need to try a new one perhaps.
I hope this helps
Vince.

Also the quality of fuel can affect pinking too.

The pinking you are on about doesnt make a metalic noise... And on standard mapped management even with crap fuel ive never seen heard of one pink... The map should back the ignition out until the knock stops, thats why better fuel "can" make an engine perform better because the ignition can be advanced without fear of it detting... Have you had any clutch problems? Engaging? Disengaging?

When I say metallic its like 2 spoons whacking together - definitely pinking as Ive had this on another car

YES - had a second hand box fitted with new clutch kit, first 200miles was a bit tricky getting into 1st and 4th, took a couple of try's - this went away but occasionally it can be stiff coming out of reverse.

Whys that ???

Thanks all

A`h well you rule the fuel out then, more than likely you need a new knock sensor then mate.

Just check your spark plugs are torqued in properly as a loose spark plug can make this sound too. Just an easy check before you carry out more expensive jobs :)

Not difficult just in an out of the way place under the inlet manifold at the back of the engine mate.

Im not sure if mine does it when cold as i let mine get to temp before driving hard.

Either way it shouldnt do it and it sounds nasty hahaha
