Hey guys and girls, I'm fed up of the shift I work.. I am planning on attempting to negotiate a change of shift to enable me to work a permanent day shift as opposed to a 6-2pm one week and then 2pm-10pm the following week.

The main reason I would like to negotiate a change is the fact I want to goto college in the evenings and have a better standard of life.

I was wondering if anyone had ever negotiated a shift change or had any advice for me as to how to go about it.

My work place is notorious for being very defensive when people ask for any type of change but I think I at least need to attempt it and then weigh up my options at the end of it.

Advice please :geek:

Who do you work for?

More than likely tell you to swivel unless you have a very good reason for doing so

I used to work for a major company who manufactor a lot of household names

They were changing shifts to "relays" from continentals

One bloke could not do the relays as he had just split from his wife and ended up with the kids? (well she fucked off with his best mate but hey ho). Anyway they said his personal life was his problem and if he couldn't make it work then it was suggested he hand in his resignation.... To witch he now has and lost everything apparently

Some companies can be brutal and don't give a fuck and it usually is the bigger firms

So telling them you want to basically so you can in time find a better job by going to night school isnt going to go down well

Just ask them the worst thing they can say is no and then you are back to the same position. Explain your wanting to go to college and they might look at it in a different light. You get no where without asking.

It's worth asking. Good luck when you do.

A line used by one of my old managers at a big company I worked for was "you work for us, we don't work for you". As shit as it is it's true unfortunately. I'm just glad I work for a small company now working alongside the owner of the company although if I wanted to change my hours permanently I imagine I'd be told no lol.

Edit: or find someone who only wants to do the 2-10pm shift and see if you can do his earlies and he does all your lates.

Be 50/50 really because if you say your going college they will assume your going to find another job soon and may replace you..

so far I have written this....

Dear Operations Manager,

I would like to request a change in my shift schedule. I am currently scheduled to work a double day shift 6am – 2pm Mon – Fri alternating 2pm – 10pm.

Due to planned changes in my academic schedule, I would like to change my shift schedule to a permanent day shift 8am - 5pm Mon – Fri.
This shift schedule change has a work life balance in mind thus enabling me to attend college and further my education and to hopefully progress within the company and take on more responsibility and improve the level of production.

I understand the work demands of a Print Press Operative and the importance of having key members on the floor at key hours within Etifax. In keeping with the company's needs in mind, I would like to give a few reasons as to why I think this shift change would also benefit production and the company moving forward.

With the introduction of Prism and the added importance of having a successful implementation I would like to take on responsibility of its operation and logistics to ensure that production needs are met consistently on a daily basis.

After making notes on the operation of the line I feel that production relies largely on three key areas within the Prism line itself;

• The flow of resources, between the point of origin and the point of destination – Ensuring batches are created and sent successfully, Covers are printed and laminated within a timely manner and work is fulfilled in date order. Technical Issues are raised immediately and followed through with colleagues to completion.
• Covering the machines in the absence of on site engineers. Between 6am and 10am the machines are prevalent to downtime. I feel I have demonstrated a strong ability above others to ensure machine up time to maximise productivity.
• Liaising between colleagues to ensure that production deadlines are met. Ensure shift change over at 2pm is a smooth transition and the line does not stop running. Organising any make ups to ensure that batches are complete and checked off before entering gateway thus reducing their work and increasing the company’s productivity on the whole.

In Parvis Kamapours absence I take on responsibility of ensuring that the samples are batched and completed on time. It has been suggested to me before that I take on the samples full time and I would really like the added responsibility.

Below I have listed other viable options that fit my schedule and I want to give you the flexibility to determine which option would better suit the business as a whole.

• 6am – 2pm Mon – Fri
• 7am – 3pm Mon – Fri
• 10 am – 6pm Mon – Fri

I would love to be able to have a formal discussion with you about my request and answer any questions you may have.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
your worst fakkin nightmare

They will blatently tell me to fuck off... but nothing ventured, nothing gained eh

you need some kind of over-ruling factor, like child care issues etc

letter is far to long - much better to go and ask.

I work for a big company and we have to be far more lenient than a small company because it is expected - bigger companies can carry more chaff apparantley. However it comes down more to the strength of the union, bigger companies usually have a stronger union.

Will you lose your shift premium? 15% for double days. Surely there are people on days who want to earn more money? Better off asking someone to swap shifts so the comapny has nothing to lose. Try to create a win/win situation.

I am one of the few who doesn't have a shift premium, another reason why I would like to transfer to days

They do not give a badgers bollock about you.

Good luck buddy :y:

Why don't you just ask face to face?
