View Full Version : Sony CD-Less Stereo... can't get old stereo out?!

Hello, hello, hello!
I have a Citroen Saxo Desire 2002 1.1l and the problem I have is that I can't get the old, original stereo out!!!
There is only one hole in each top corner, so I've had to bend the release keys I got from Halfords into a L shape to be able to even get them into the holes to start with.
They then push in and sort of click, but then for the life of me I can't figure out how to get it out! I've done what the website's say which is to put pressure away from the centre of the unit and pull at the same time. Sometimes they feel like they're stuck and sometimes they just slip right out again not moving the stereo.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong! Being a stubborn, money watching girl I don't really want to pay the smelly Halfords man £30 to fit my stereo...
Do I need to take the stereo surround out (fascia?!) first? If so then that doesn't look like it's going to come off either!
Bit stuck on what to do, and was wondering if anyone had any hints before my Dad gets his hammer out. I also don't fancy him destroying the inside of my car by trying to 'help'.
Please helppppp meeeeeeeee!
Thank you :y:

With the pins pushed in (clicked) try and reach up behind the dash from the passenger side footwell and push the stereo from the back. Best technique I know anyway.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll try to push it out from the back.
If that doesn't work then I'll try the screw drivers. Did you just push them in and pull them out, or did you have to twist?

2 screwdrivers, 1 either side of stereo, push them in, push away from centre and rag it out, who cares if you damage it, there naff anyway lol.
chances are you will damage the metal cage too which sits round the stereo, but if you have a new HU it should come supplied :)

Screwdrivers thin enough seem like they'd snap tho?! I'll give it a try this morning to see if I can get it out again before I let Dad attempt it. He'd probably cause more damage that I would lol.

I have muscle but I'm not a man, manning up? Don't think so :p however I am fannying around with it a bit too much I think!

Just a quick update, I tried pushing the stereo forward from the back whilst the release keys were in, but this didn't seem to help at all! Perhaps my arms are slightly too short or I'm not putting enough force into it, as it sort of moved, but more up/down that forwards/out.
I've read that someone couldn't get their's out and needed to take the whole plastic covering, centre console thingy (I can imagine eye rolling at my technical knowledge!) off to gain access to the stereo and wires?! I don't want to resort to that, as Father Dearest would say something along the lines of "Jog on" if I mentioned that was the only way to do it...
Getting a bit impatient with waiting for my new stereo to be fitted :n:
Any extra help would be greatly appreciated! And as a last resort, does anyone know of a garage/shop that does fitting cheaper than the Halford's £30 installation by the smelly staff members?

Dawn Saaaaaaf. Near Windsor/Slough/Maidenhead.
And I can't get any screwdriver into the release hole bits that aren't the size of the skinny little ones as the holes are so small!!! :(

Oh I see. So the surround bit of plastic can come off, and if I snap it I assume it won't matter? Hopefully...
And then just put screwdrivers either end and try to ply the actual stereo out? I don't really want to damage the surrounding area too much though as I don't have the money to make my car look awesome, just hopefully a bit less crap than it looks now, haha.
My budget is about... nothing :(

Ok, so thanks to the suggestions of prising it out (I used 2 blunt butter knives) it popped out no problem. And then confused me... looking at the wires coming off of the back of the original unit, there doesn't seem to be enough places to connect things from the new unit.
I don't know if anyone's installed the unit before, it's a Sony DSX-S100 CD-less unit.
To sound completely stupid, I have no idea where these wires go...

The installation 'manual', if they can even call it that, is absolutely useless and I'm feeling like this dude right here > :wall:
Any help would be appreciated, I will not pay Halfords, goddamnit!!!

OH MY GOD IT'S IN...
That's what she said.
Anyway, it's in, however either I didn't get an aerial thingy or I've lost it.
Either way, does anyone know what adaptor thing I'll need for the Saxo's antennae to the unit's?

you dont need anything, pull stereo back out and there will be the aerial cable, just plug it in :)

It won't plug in, because the original unit had a sticking out park for the Saxo's aerial cable to attach to. The new unit I have, the part it will attach is inwards pointing, and doesn't look like it'll plug into it!
The left hand hole is the one for the aerial...

And the top bit of this wire is what the Saxo's aerial wire looks like (though I assume you already know that lol)
http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSxAfIe_BWO8K6bhmUD2hvu_MbfRWBqu nP9ekBprnoJdCAa1YCG
So it's like I need something to plug into the new unit before I can attach the wire, to make it the 'male' connection, instead of the 'female' connection... ;) if you get my drift, haha.

if you have a maplin near you i picked an adaptor up for £2 or if you cant get an adaptor you can buy a screw on adaptor where you cut and strip the cable and screw it into the new adaptor, took 10 minutes
