Just to give everyone the heads up on a knocking noise that stumped me for ages!

if you have a knocking noise the fist thing is to find out where its coming from... whether it be front, back, left, right etc.

my knocking noise was every time i cornered. although you could hear it when driving straight.
it sounded like it was coming from passenger side front.
i took it to a few different mechanics who all told me different things.:wall:

first thing i checked was bearings or so i thought. jacking the car up and trying to wobble the wheel which didn't appear to move.

i went on replacing different parts on the recommendations of the mechanics.
drive-shafts, wishbones, bottom ball joints, tie rod inner. all at a nice cost.

after doing all this and it not solving the problem i went back and checked the bearings again. this time it was quite clear that they were the problem, as the wheel moved a lot when being rocked. :wall::wall::wall:

so in conclusion - if you have a knock CHECK YOUR BEARINGS PROPERLY!

hope this was useful to someone.

Would any of the problems you thought was wrong, have shown up on an MOT. My knocking is whenever I corner mainly to the left but I also have a faint knocking noise when driving and it's more pronounced when going up a hill or under strain.

My car passed it's MOT and the tester said that whatever the knocking was it was not part of the MOT test and the only real way to find out what is actually wrong is wait until the problem got so bad that the car broke down.

if the struts moving at the bottom it could be lower arm bushes, tie bar or bottom ball joint

wheel bearing are a simple check, they either move side to side AND top to bottom OR they can have no play at all and grumble as the wheel spins. You can usually tell by driving around corners or swaying the car side to side. The pitch of the noise changes as that faulty side takes the load...so turning right loads the left side of the car. if the bearing is faulty on the left, that side the grumble will deepen in sound. Usually its fairly obvious if its front or back

I had this, car passed the MOT while i was suffering from driveshaft knocks. Basically on the MOT they only static test your car, which means that when the do check driveshafts/ball joints, there under no load at all which can make them seem fine, i ended up taking mine to a garage, have a mechanic drive it and it was a yeah, your driveshaft/ball joint is knackered.
