It could be down to the quality of the spray can you are using.

I sprayed my citroen badge and interior air vents using spray cans from halfords and they turned out perfect.

Make sure you are doing light coats for with primer , colour and then laquer.

Make sure the surface of the grill is clean and spray indoors.

As said above it can do with the quality but what I find helps to get a good finish with a can is put on a misty first coat of laquer 5 min later while its still a bit sticky put on a heavier coat than the first and you should be able to see it run into each other and smooth out hope you get what I mean :P

as above the best method is to appy a dust coat of laquor and wait a few mins for it to go tacky and hit it again, also it being cold doesn't help either.

Heating the part Up even with a hairdryer before painting helps to prevent runs

If the runs aren't too bad you can wait for it to be pretty much dry and use some very very fine sandpaper, lightly wet sand it and then buff it up with some rubbing compound like g3. Not too much rubbing though as you could rub through the lacquer.

Are you takeing the shinyness out of the base colour before laquering giving it a quik key?

Why would you do that? There is no need.

Try it with a base coat with loads of silver in it or any metallic for that matter. You should never touch the final coat with anything other than a tack rag.

Bit sarky aint it? And obviously not much into painting but I rattle canned mine and the laquer said to take the shine away from the finish before applying which I did with 1500 wet n dry and got the perfect finish with mine and that was with wicked red paint cod ekqd

the paint will flatten out, spray it so it looks rough and it will smooth out. lots of thin coats better than a thick

Why would you key it and then lacquer it? Your then just going to shine and seal and scratchy bit of paint. . doi!
