my saxo had a universal backbox on it when i got it, now i want rid cause it doesnt sit nice and i never really liked it anyways. i am looking at getting a saxo specific one which will 'go straight on' BUT... i've noticed that there is a small piece of pipe been slid in and welded onto the end of the middle section so that the universal box can slide over it and then clamped on with a simple 'U' clamp.

so my mid section doesnt end with a rolled out 'female' looking lip like in the pic below. its got a straight bit of roughly 2 inch diameter pipe coming out about 4 inches long instead.

so im wondering basically what is the original fitment supposed to be like?? cause ive never seen it standard...

if i buy a saxo specific box how will it fit on and will i need a different clamp to the 'U' clamp I have??

for example ive saw this system on ebay for illustration purposes, is this how the standard mid section end and backbox end fitment is originally?

the two sort of widened lipped edges seemingly just clamp together... they dont slide into one another or nothing holds them together at all to form a tight join even before you slap on the clamp??

i need to know so i know whether to order a new clamp at the same time (which one?) and also whether to keep that bit of pipe thats welded to the mid section or chop it off! :)

Any help or pics or good descriptions greatly appreciated.

P.S. - I did a search and nothing clearly answered my query, plus I had a good 15 min read at the saxo hayes manual today in halfrauds and that didnt help either

the standard orrigional mid section end where it joins the back box is just like the one in the pic with an outward rolled flange, the backbox join sits in the rolled out flange and is then clamped down from the top with a clamp that comes down either side slightly holdign it together, i think you have two options either buy a new mid section and backbox or try to put just a new backbox on however you may not be able to mount it correctly due to it not havign the outward rolled flange and thus may need to be welded to ya mid section, personally i'd get a new mid section aswell

hey thanks for your reply, you have shed a bit of light on that.

so basically even if i chop the extra bit of pipe off my mid section it may not have room for any new backbox to go in correctly, cause there will still be a bit of that pipe stuck in there, unless i can bust the weld and pull the whole thnig out.

is the saxo backbox original fitting like the one in the pic or is it different??

as the backbox in the pic is meant to be specific for a saxo, but to me the fitting looks the same size and shape as the mid section end in the pic, which puzzles me as to how one can go inside the other and be clamped if they are both the same size/shape anyway...?

there not the same size the mid section join is bigger and the boxbox join is smaller so it fits inside the midsection join

ok, thanks for your input again mate, appreciate it. when i get my new box i will just have to have a look at it and see what i can do with it. hopefully I wont need to pay out for a new mid section aswell or I may have to get it welded on but didnt want to really do that.

i dont think mid sections are that expensive to be honest, check the forsale section for a vts beign broken for bits as u should be able to get one for about £20 used or if not u can get a stright through section for £59 i think.
