View Full Version : Window tinting fun!

Had the windows on my VTR tinted a few weeks ago £150 for 13% on the backs and whatever the max is you can have on the front.

Anyway, after a few days I noticed lines in the front windows both sides. They weren't that noticable so I didn't bother doing anything about them but after a few weeks they got so obvious and you could actually feel them if you ran your nails over the glass. (they're vertical lines by the way).

So i called the guy who tinted them for me and he told me he'd never had that before and to bring them back and he'll sort them (he just re-tinted them for me for free) but what he's said is the seal on the inside of the glass (not sure if it's a seal but whatever the thing is at the top of the door that the window touches when it slides up and down) is made of plastic and not felt like most cars so that's what's scratching the windows up.

So now I've got to replace that seal on both sides before I can open my windows again! He did clean up the seals before putting them back on but I've tried opening my windows slightly and it's still scratching the tint.

Anyone got any ideas where I can get replacements with felt or any ideas of something I can stick on the old ones???

Cheers guys, this is driving me nuts!

Yes mate I got told this. You need to get Renault clio ones as the saxo ones do not have a filter unlike the clio ones that doo. It will trap the dirt and stop dirt from scratching the film.

Not too sure as I have not got my windows tinted. Best to ask your mate as he will most probably know. I would guess the newish one. Let us know how you get on tho.

Dunno if you had the rain where you are but everywhere flooded here yesterday, the renault workshop is totally underwater! lol

Basically... the strips/seals on Saxo's and 106's are 100% plastic. If dirt or grit becomes trapped, it will then be pushed against the film and in time will make scratch lines on the film. To prevent this from happening, take a trip to your local scrap yard and take two strips/seals from a Renault Clio (e.g. M-reg onwards). The Clio strips/seals are (should be) direct replacement for the Saxo ones. The reason why I said 'should be' is that when I put them in Mike's (MikeCracknell) car, I had to trim about an inch of them. My ones went straight in. It might be dependant on which model Clio you take the seals from.

I took 2 from an M reg Clio. It solved the problem. Cost me like 3 quid from a scrap yard. Had to retint the front windows thou as a result of the scratched tints!

Problem solved now. Scrappies can be your best friend. Although I have told a few other people about this, yours is the one that I have heard a response from ie did it. Enjoy scrape free tint windows.

Ay? A lot of people have "done it".

Ok I started this thread ages ago but anyway, finally got my windows sorted.

Went down my local scrappy and got 2 door seal bits (whatever they are) off an M reg clio. I had to cut a bit off of each end to make them fit but other then that they went on fine. While I was getting them though one of the blokes that works at the scrappy said to me he tints windows and uses some sort of a felt tape to just cover the standard saxo ones. So that could be worth a try if you want to avoid cutting clio ones up.

Personally I'd rather just fit the clio door bits though incase the felt should come unstuck.

I need to sort my driverside seal, everytime I wash the car I get it lovely window goes down upon returning big wet lines which stain the newly cleaned window.

WTF?? You have scrappy owners who are civilised? The ones I've spoken to in the past have either been 99% brain dead or plain obnoxious! Lucky you!
