Well if his head does 'bin it', it will make for a field day for you tube.

I know hes done lots of prep and stuff but the amount of things that could go wrong, and it only takes 1, is just huge. I shall be watching with baited breath though

Was thinking the exact same, i presume the weather conditions might differ that high up in comparison to what we can see? just a guess

Ross

What's wrong with the weather? Looks calm to me, I'm sure Ross could shed some light on this.

With something that rises so slowly, even a very slight wind will make it drift over such a height. The winds aloft will also be very different to what we're seeing on the ground. Might be <1 knot on the ground, but 3 knots at 100ft (look at the balloons moving, there is some wind there), and perhaps 10 knots at 10,000ft if their lucky. If the uppers (20k ft) reach (say) 50kts or more, it could be grounded as the balloon would be effectively drifting at 60mph sideways for a couple of hours.

They'll have planes up at various heights measuring windspeeds :)

But once you set off your stuck with it, what happens if they get a dramatic change half way up the ascent

Ross
9th October 2012, 12:44
(I plucked those numbers out of thin air (excuse the pun) but just to give examples)

When we skydive normally, you might have only 5kts on the ground, but you may have to exit the aircraft 2+ miles away from the landing area if the upper winds are strong (say 30kts). You drift in freefall a lot - and you'd drift a shit load more if you were the size of that balloon and not falling at 120mph!

The winds aloft are apparently already 18-20kts at 1000ft, so pretty strong. They may well cancel if this gets worse - I dont know what their limits will be obviously.

Ross
9th October 2012, 12:45
But once you set off your stuck with it, what happens if they get a dramatic change half way up the ascent
As you say - you're stuck with it.

That's why they'll always defer to cancelling it for safety rather than go.

christoph

As you say - you're stuck with it.

So in theory, could this not even happen today at all? And we'll all end up waiting for naff all.

christoph

Looking likely tbh, not just theory lol :)

Dang it. Just a curiosity question then, as your obviously clued up on the subject. To what extent can you predict what the weather will be like that high up? ? Cause even the weather guy on the telly gets it wrong most the time for the next day.

AzzAW93
9th October 2012, 13:01
just out of interest, does anyone know his predicted free fall time?
and also i wonder how far he could get with one of those wing'd suits on?

Ross
9th October 2012, 13:10
freefall time will be about 6 minutes. The first 50k ft has very little air resistance so he'll be chippin' - about 700mph.

Wingsuit would be unusable at anything over about 50k ft (guesstimate). So not as far as you'd imagine. A long way mind you - 50+ miles for sure.

Regarding weather prediction would be with weather balloons up until today, and today they'll have a plane measuring at various heights (probably every 10k ft or so) up to about 50k ft to give "live" data of windspeed and direction. Above that, it's relying on the weather balloons and historic data.

gravity

Jay_
9th October 2012, 15:58
Deflate the balloon?

Brettles1986
9th October 2012, 16:00
gravity

I know that gravity obviously pulls towards the centre of the earth but it would surely have to detach the helium balloon from it which then makes it become a very heavy object on its way to earth and very dangerous.

I presume an automatic parachute the deploys to break its fall at a certain altitude?

Ross
9th October 2012, 16:02
once he's on the ground, mission control will remotely trigger balloon/capsule separation. The separation will deflate the balloon, and both will fall back to earth. They have their own parachute systems to control their decent. :)

After the space shuttle disaster many have believed that there would have been survivors if the suits were slightly different and what not.

Space suits are not as flexible as this suit, much more of a nightmare to get in and out of etc..

You are aware that in different parts of the world there are optimum times to launch too? EG UK summer time is not summer in OZ

Like I have seen in other threads, something called high levels of retardation (as seen in the post above). I think most wouldn't guess than the jump was planned to happen exactly 65 years to the day after Chuck Yeager became the first man to break the sound barrier in an aeroplane.

If you can't bother to open a book or even google, there's that film called The Right Stuff.

It's pretty amazing and I'd never have to balls to do it,

But every one keeps saying he broke the sound barrier under his own power...

No he didn't he was powered by the biggest force known to man.. Gravity?
I could understand if he broke it by running etc

Not even slightly close to being so.

Also, it is under his own "power" is as much as he wasn't being propelled forward by an engine.

^^^ Wrong. It is a free fall. Hence gravity in full effect. He went faster than a 500 ft freefall because there is no atmosphere at that altitude.

It's also unpropelled, so not powered. Gravity wasn't an engine last time I checked.

I think I saw that one too. Changed my life.

Mass is the source that triggers gravity, and is acknowledged as a source of power which lead to recent discoveries on how to bend space and time and how faster than light travel can be theoretically possible.

Theoretically, the force becomes zero only at an infinite distance. Similar to the Earth, the sun, Moon and, for that matter, every celestial body exerts a force of gravity corresponding to its size. I hope that's not too much klingonspeak.

I understand what you're saying. But like I said, it's not an engine, physically strapped to him, pushing him to break the sound barrier.

I get it's respective masses pulling him towards the Earth, providing him with acceleration through the air etc etc, but IMO it's still not "propelled" as such.

The second paragraph was a breakdown of a quick search on how to explain to him in a nutshell that he's not correct about that guy self propelling himself using G-forces. Or maybe you expected me to type a full blown explanation that would be way too advanced for the saxperience level that you commonly refer to as "retarded" :P

I love that you automatically assume you're intellectually superior manu.

When clearly, you just love google.

Not forgetting you've been in every imaginable scenario, quite surprised your not spouting out about how you jumped from 140,000 feet years ago, but it was kept quiet. Actually, you remind me of the IT guy from the office.

And I love how you assume about what I assume. Now I can't really make that jump without a $200.000, a NASA team and a redbull sponsorship can I. Then keep it all quiet.

Wrong mod. That was Ryan, not Ross. Genius. I thought you had better search skills than that.

Also, it seems to be commonplace for you. I expected better from the mighty Manu. The one who corrects everybody, particularly women, on their "wrong doings"

I just fell off of it, goddamn gravity. Obviously, trying to explain someone that it is a source of power for warp drives was way too intellectual. I now realize it's a lot less funny than a quick text photoshop with a one liner that will bypass any sort of conversation.
