Since the rear seats & trim have all been removed, I was considering just cleaning all the dust and dirt off the metal and then going over it with a rattle can = there's going to be no passengers or foot traffic going over it, it's purely to tidy it all up a bit..

Is it worth sanding down with fine paper and using primer first?

yes tbh it is. Otherwise anything rubbing the paint at all (even putting stuff in the back for a short journey) will risk rubbing it off. Key it a little and it will last a lot longer :)

nice one - cheers Ross. Was gonna go take the front seats and remaining carpet out but the sky has just turned thick grey so might just hang fire for the time being..

Just rub it down with a scotch-brite pad and then paint, shouldn't need to use primer as it should have allready been primered
