Take the fuse out (or switch off the circuit breaker) for the lighting circuit. Take old switch off, put new switch on :y: Double check the power to the switch is off when you take it off the wall with a meter just to be safe.

If you end up changing the switch, turn the electricity off.

Dont want to shock yourself do you ;)

Like everyone has already said its a broken/sticking switch. Just make sure the power is off to the lighting circuit (or if you dont know which fuse/mcb is for what circuit trip the Main RCD)

Then its 3 cables, there should be identification on the back of the switches to identify which cables goes where. But it wont matter if you get them mixed up, saying that the earth needs to be in the right place. Just make sure the cables are secure in the terminals and they cannot fall out.

take a picture of the back of the switch
upload it on this thread

and i'll try and tell you whats wrong :)

As above it'l be the switch, best bet is just to buy another switch, and replace it with the old one

It's only really a 5 min job too, make sure the main switch in the consumer unit is off, unscrew the two screws off the face of the switch, pull the switch off, unscrew the 3 bits off cable out the back of the switch, re wire the 3 bits of cable into the new switch in the same places, screw new switch into the backbox in the wall, turn main switch back on, jobs a good un :y:

I've probably made it sound harder than it is but honestly it's pretty easy

Edit: just seen your neighbour sorted it lol

I read you instructions and you are saying you can diagnose if the switch internals are broken from an picture. That will show a bit of black plastic with 2/3 cables sticking out.

you remove the switch.
and if all the wires are in the correct place,
then you know the switch is broken

Er, no mate.

Disconnecting one side will finally diagnose the switch is at fault and you haven't got a short between your live and switched live in or around the fitting.
