Came to fitting my turbo manifold yesterday, then putting the alternator on but the alternator does fit properly as touching the wastegate outlet on the plastic. Im sure ive fitted alternator correctly and i know the manifold fits around the alternator. Here is some pics-

Do the 8v alternator set up bud

Normal. You need to run a different alternator (8v or early vts one iirc is shorter).

An engine I had used washers to space the Alternator way out, and reversing the Bottom pulley the other way around. It worked. But the 8v Setup if you want a proper job.

Not the best of pics.

But you can still see that the 8v setup sits much lower

I use the early type GTI alternator setup on mine as the later (2001+) gti alternator didn't fit (touched the manifold like yours is showing in the photo).

I was thinking of the 8v setup. Whats needed? Just the fittings?

Yes must be the VTR set up as other the 8v dont bolt on to the cast iron block, speaking from exp.

Does the vtr setup produce the same amount of power as a vts one?

May look for a early type vts as i put the one off my mk2 engine onto the forged mk1 engine.

Do i need everything off a mk1 16v setup inc alternator or do i just need the brackets?

I`d imagine you`d need the alternator as well mate(may be wrong):y:

You just need to brackets all the alternators are the same except the connectors on so the later ones (3 plug ecu) can still use it though.

iirc, you will also need the early alternator - my late s2 alternator touched the screamer pipe.

So that was till touching with the mk2 alternator, mk1 brackets? Just no point me wasting money on another alternator when not needed.

yes. We tried the mk1 brackets, with my then current 2002 spec gti alternator. didn't fit, so bought an early alternator and that works (as you can see in the picture above). That's my experience of course, and likely not the same due to the parts-bin style of allocating parts on french cars ;)

So need the whole lot then... :wall: haha. Well danny who made the manifold had a early 106 alternator would of been mk1. Can you fit the alternator bolts wth the engine in?
