My W Reg Saxo Forte is really playing up now, I am struggling to get it into reverse without a lot of grinding, and crunching same in First gear, but now having trouble getting it into any gear, without a real slam down on the clutch and use of great force with the gear lever.

I can only assume its the gearbox that's on its last legs, but read somewhere about gearbox bolts could cause this. As the car is not really worth a great deal I don't want to take it in for repair until I know exactly what's wrong or if it will be worth a repair.

Is there anyway to find out if its the gearbox or a bolt?

Could be, gear linkages (common fault on saxos), clutch cable may need adjusting, you can pick saxo gearboxes up for less than £50 if you shop around, I sold mine about 3weeks ago, for £40 with 60 odd k on it. Worth a look at a few of these options before dropping a new box in.

Most likely clutch cable adjustment. Easy fix.

Some are self adjusting (in which case its possible the cable has stretched past the point of maximum adjustment). Others (generally poverty spec) are manual adjustment. :)

Would I get so much crunching and grinding if it was just the clutch?

I was getting some strange whirring noise whenever I was either coasting or had the clutch down, but my biting point has not changed

sounds like the box is fugged.
