I am 20 years old, I have been driving 3 years and have now come to buy a new car. Something nice but economic and cheap.

I have looked at a 1.9JTD Fiat Stilo, or a 306 2.0 HDI.

Fiat was 1.5k cheapest and the 306 was 1.9k cheapest.

I do not understand why it has become so expensive as I have never driven less than a 1.6 litre car. My first car was a VTR for £2k the year, second until recent was a 1986 1.6 Golf Cabriolet for £1300 the year.

I often hear about other young drivers getting super cheap insurance, I am 21 soon so is it worth waiting another monthish for my 21st? Are there any decent companys to go with? (I have heard of cheap insurers that give you classic car insurance for cars 10y/o + ??)

Or do I do what my first year was with my parent as a main driver? :geek:

I thought I would be paying less than 1k by now :wall:

If you can wait till your 21 mate, mine dropped £1400 when i got to 21, got 2 years NCB the same month aswell

:panic: you saved £1400? :A:

I might make a quote faking I'm 21 for a test.. that would be smart. If what you said is true, that is mental?! :y:

My twin brother is 20 and has a 1.9jtd as his first car, started driving when he turned 20 and he paid 1.7k for his insurance with Adrian Flux. Could try them?

However what I would recommend doing is not putting your mum as main driver as that is fronting, unless she is the genuine main driver of the vehicle. Limit your mileage, say you keep your car on the road, not the garage as many people think is the cheapest, try adding both parents to your policy as named drivers, that knocks off a lot for me, and can be useful if they need your car, but wait till your 21 mate, as it is going to be considerably cheaper. I know it's a ball ache but you won't be regretting it when you're paying a lot less.

I'm 20, 2 years ncb and am paying £635 on my vtr fully comp with an accelerated NCB plan with Elephant.

Your insurance is astronomically cheap. :panic:

Is adding both parents better? I added my Dad and it made it a lot cheaper, I was going to test it again with my mum (probably be cheaper as she is female) and I am yet to try a quote faking that I am already 21 to see if waiting a month will give a big change.

Best quote for a 1.7CDTI Honda Civic (03 plate) - £1300.

It's getting better! :boxing:

Jeez, expensive insurance...

Yes, adding on more experienced named drivers is beneficial. Add your parents.

Postcode plays a big part in it as well. Have you tried fully comp with a higher excess? Sucks if you need to claim, but if you don't then it brings your premium down.

apparently there are many quirks that seem advantageous, like saying you keep the car on the road instead of driveway or garage...

Try coop, i currently drive a 306 hdi, im 19, live in a D postcode and i have 0 no claims, My mom is the main driver tho but its only 900 for the yr.
I done over 60quotes with all different types of cars, Dervs are the cheapest by far and small engined cars dont seem to make much difference on the price of insurance for me.

This is with £300 excess, i'm quite positive about the 1k quote at 21 on the 03 ctdi civic. Would be my lowest quote ever, and If I have to make a claim I would like to get some money from my car. :y:

That is fronting my good sir  however my first year at 17 I did it with quinn, still got my no claims, could drive other vehicles and only paid 2k on a VTR. :A:

Both parents = 1.2k, then if I wait a month its only 1k.. :panic:

That's on confused, I'll try all the other comparisons and then direct to the company see if it's cheaper. 1k Nectar points with confused though!

maybe a odd idea and i know its not what you are after but have you looked at kit cars? i got a quote on a robin hood 2b when i was 24 (2 yr ncb, no claims ect) with a cossie engine for about £380, turbo'd with 450 bhp was about £560. im looking to get one but put an rb26dett lump in it, pushing 500 bhp with nos. got a quote of £500. i wont tell you what im paying on my vtr, it will make you cry...

Shit that just made me realize i'm due a thousand nectar points from confused and never claimed them! Bah such a waste.

You knocked down to 1k already? That's good going, if you try Admiral, Elephant and Bell they have 10 month policies which is what i'm on. Gives you a full years ncb that can be used with any company after just 10 months. Could potentially save your self some cash for the future, but it swings in round a bouts as the policy isn't a year but it's cheaper than a year policy and after 6 years you're essentially getting an extra ncb hah.

As I mentioned earlier my 10 month plan is £635 if I went with a full year it was like £700

no offence but these kinds of threads are just pointless, We all know that insurance companies pull nice big figures from their arse and laugh all the way to the bank, so many factors to consider its pointless moaning about!!!

Which is costing you more per month than if you'd gone for a 12 month policy..

10 month policies are a false saving in reality.

My lowest quote was £1k from Bell (Admiral), but they require using one of those black box devices? No thanks... :n:

But there are methods to getting cheaper insurance, such as putting both parents on it which I have now learnt. If you don't want insurance tips then I do not mind if you stay out of the thread.

Sky, I have only heard bad reviews from your company. I am 20 with 3 years driving but 0NCB. Insure me on a '04 1.7CDTI Civic, for under £1k, and you have a sale. I doubt you can though.

I seriously doubt you could get under 1k for him, you wanted 900 for my vtr- same sort of area, 10 years ncb and im 32!!!!!!

You are correct, it is costing me more per month, but the difference was so negligible I thought to hell with it as my renewal is now in April instead of June, and I can't wait to get rid of this shit heap saxo it will just save me 2 months extra waiting come renewal when I get the new car. I probably will never go on a 10 month policy again after.

Seems like you've done most of what you can already, but another big factor is your job, if you can maybe be a bit creative with that.

Just a bit of trivia though for people talking about extortionate premiums - although they're high, insurance companies make very little out of car insurance on the whole. A lot in recent years have actually made some hefty losses.

You don't know that lack of revenue is what is creating the losses though...

Have you tried seeing how much it would cost if you put down you are already 21 as you keep saying you are going to but dont update lol I got a new car a week before I was 21 and I tested it out and it also dropped 1400ish so I waited a week and then took out insurance.

Yeah but I can't lie about my job though as it would invalidate my insurance. I'm a cargo handler/baggage handler. Don't know why that would make it any better or worse but it proves I have a completely clean criminal record, am required to drive airside and around the aircrafts so I can't be a terrible driver. I also go to college and tried it with or without putting that and didn't really change.

Yeah I save 200ish IIRC, as I did try it. I was wondering whether I could go a month without a car and considering I work at silly times that seems unlikely. :n:

I will try a quote with Sky but I heard they are partners with this other company and they basically stitch you up to invalidate your insurance if you try to make a claim. Apparently according to tobomoto they are rip offs too. I'll give it a go though.

In no way true, my missus' old man had his modded Focus insured with Sky the entire time he owned the car. Best price/policy with mods, when someone reversed into him in a car park it was resolved straight away, no questions asked.

It's why I try them every year.
