every time i start the car up the pump start to whirl its got 3/4 tank of petrol in tank any reason why

after disconnecting all the wire's etc it was the petrol pump whirling

yes. The pump primes to build pressure. It's that you can hear with the engine off.

Can't hear it with the engine off only when you start engine and the noise stays Untill you turn engine off

Sorry - you weren't clear on that in your original post :)

Noisy pump then. Due for a replacement shortly. Ideally for your convenience, prior to it failing (seizing) when you need to use the car...

They can be noisy to some extent - if you've removed any sound deadening or carpet/seats etc, they can be very intrusive. But if you can hear it with the engine running, driving along, with a standard interior, then it's on it's way out. Very easy to replace if you get a complete pump/swirl pot setup.

Also would a p420 fault be caused by a faulty petrol pump
