"Throw money at a problem, it’ll usually fix it. Ask any F1 team, or Michael Jackson. Going fast is the same – if you write enough cheques the chances are you’ll have a fast car. But take away the money and things become a lot more interesting . Bravery, ingenuity, skill and a healthy dose of luck are your tools."

Just wondered if anyone on here has done it or thought about it?

ive had a bit of an attempt at building a car to the budget with a vtr
managed it but never competed as i got bored and blew the budget haha

its actually quite interesting to see what some people come up with
and its also a nice challenge to make things and bargain hunt
puts a whole different twist on going fast

yeah the concept really appeals to me - only snag is that my vts cost £800, and although I've only had it about 3 weeks I've already spent about £400 on bits for it (bucket seats, 266mm brake set up, vts gearbox, oil cooler, poly carb windows, air feed and loads more)..

So I'm already over the £1k challenge bit, but would love to get involved in something like this. Maybe in a year or two when clio 172's are cheaper still :)

well you can sell 250 quids worth of trims ect to get back in budget on the car

i had a vtr for 500 quid bare just engine box and rear beam no struts no wheels no brakes i managed to get it built for about 950 quid with a048s and allsorts it wasnt a bad car all in

its now my mark 1 front ended track hack lol

Alanapone on here has done a track build for roughly 1k, again though, no competing. Looks like a good thing to do though :y:

think some guys from metropower did with a pauper spec metro fitted with a 160 vvc. Looks like something fun to do

the challenge, whilst good fun ,is meaningless unless there is a rule which states that at the end of the event you MUST be willing to sell the car to ANYONE who offers £999

Well some people in the past have sold their cars for 999quid in the spirit of it and to prove the doubters wrong

so if i were to sell my car to someone for £999 then they could run a mega s/c car with 6 speed paddle shift squential ,etc ,etc ,etc--thats why there must be a rule which says the cars must be for sale at a fixed price at the end
a set of good tyres will be £500
so to be sensible we are talking about std cars with no mods ,no safety equipment what ever

a used set of tyres thatll last a day arent 500 quid
it must have valid mot (safety checks there) and its built for 999
bying a pre built car is seen as "not in the spirt"
its more for fun than serious competition if you look on the forum
also selling at the end means you loose your toy
several cars are re used several years snd developed on literally a zero budget
quite interesting to see people ingenuity selling whats on the car to fund something else they make fit

one guy even used an old lamp post to make his rear axle on a kit car as he couldnt afford one

its a challenge to build a car you can race at the end ofbthe day not who can buy the best for 1k

Aye there will be one or two who bend the rules, but on the whole paying £50 to arse about in bangers and mix with other enthusiasts = I reckon it'd be a right laugh..

I suppose I could always return the saxo to sub-£1000 budget by removing the bucket seats and expensive items/only leave in bits upto a value of £1k :) lovely job!
