What are people's opinions of the Peugeot 306 GTI-6 compared to a 16v Saxo or 16v 106? Any bad points? Good points? Any things to look out for?

I'm a big critic of French cars BUT I do really like the 306s. However, it'd have to be a 306 phase 3 Rallye!

Yeah some seem pretty cheap. And seeing as I've got a pay rise I want a new track/fast road toy.

What are the gearboxes like?

Rallye is just a poverty spec gti6 with fancy stickers on

I'd rather have the electrics of the gti6

About even with the 106gti up to legal speeds then the gti6 starts to pull away

Make sure the cambelt and pulleys have being done as the belts like to snap and cause a lot of top end damage

Lacking lock in one direction makes multi story car parks fun

I'd rather have another s16 though given the choice

Don't the engines need their belts doing something like every 25,000 miles?
Is there any reason why the belts need doing so frequent?

Did you call a Rallye "poverty spec"? lol That's like calling the R26R a "poverty spec" Megane.

Just because it doesn't have the electric windows, central locking and air con doesn't mean it's a poverty spec option.

They're more desirable than a GTi-6, they cost more than a GTi-6 and they're more expensive than a GTi-6. Everything a poverty spec car isn't...

GTI-6 is a very decent little hot hatch, just look for full service history and cambelt changes, plus worn boxes/ brakes/clutches from wannabe heroes- these are very affordable to most now.

i guess poverty spec is the wrong word. Its a poorly spec'd gti6 lol

bit like how a 106 rally doesnt have foglights/leather seats etc

306 Rallye is one of the best cars I have ever driven, Sir Dave will agree with me!

Excellent handling and decent engine.

As above belts need doing every 25k, make sure the gearbox doesn't crunch.

Also try to get a ph3, has the better front headlights.

Bang for buck, it's hard to beat a gti6/rallye. I absolutely love my rallye, plus, they've aged well.

How expensive is "expensive" for a 306 rallye?

Tom5190
6th November 2012, 09:55
Needs to be a ph3 imo, im a huge fan of them they drive awsome from standard and with a decent setup they handle really well. Anything that you need is available in terms of track stuff too and they have ALOT of room for more power depending how deep your pockets go, 280+hp N/A and 500+hp Boost. Id prefer a rallye in your situation if its a toy.

Axle's can cause problems, however from what ive seen definatly not as common as saxo/106. The belts arn't due every 25K.

Really should be every 4/5 years or 40k, although I have been told by 3 top Peugeot guys 25/30k should really looked to change it

This is a good guide

Yea definatly agree on the 4/5 years. Lowest stated mileage is 54K in adverse conditions. I always change my belts earlly anyways.

Thought you just got that VTR?

I'd just keep the VTR you will only sell the next car and buy another lol

The 306 GTI6 I drove wasn't as nimble as the Saxo but they are a little quicker. I just liked the 6speed.

Yep
Why pay more for less??

It's no quicker than a gti6 and has less if the nice things!!
You do get some nice stickers though

And getting 280bhp n/a is very very expensive, low boost s/c is probably cheaper

The R26R was actually faster than the full fat Megane, and went a lot further than putting a few base model parts on it a la Peugeot 306 Rallye.

Even the 106 Rallyes were more special - with unique parts rather than a marketing ploy of 'less is more'

They are brilliant cars, punch well about there weight. I found theres a big step up in build quality from a vts and they feel alot more planted. The 6 speed box feels great on a fast b road.

If you dont think there awesome look at this video of one around the Ring, this is a guy from gti6 owners and it did a 8.31 lap BTG with a standard engine and is hassling a BMW Z3M all the way around...

read the advert, its being sold as salvage with no warranty or comeback

and at that milage you would want to see history for at least one if not two cam belt changes and tensioner

the rallye is the same car as the gti-6, just with less stuff...

the R26r had parts designed for it to make it better than the r26...

Harry, didn't you just buy another clio? they're very similar in terms of pace compared to the clio, but can't comment on the handling.

I like gti6's though, don't think i'd own one now, but always liked them.

Standard engine you say but clearly running bare minimum of a cat back exhaust system and stripped on almost track tyres and probably not on stock suspension. They aren't that vocal on stock exhaust I know because 2 of my friends used to own them.

Driver also clearly knows the track well and can drive. Your average joe on a completely stock GTi-6 wouldn't be as close as that to a Z3M lol.

Don't get me wrong they are good cars, and quick and handle well stock and I like the 6speed.

Sounds quite similar to my car tbh. Wonder if there are any similarities between the EW10J4S & XU10J4RS.

When did A048's become 'almost' track tyres lol?

But you're right though. could be a confident driver in the gti-6 and a non-confident driver in the bmw.

compared to each other the z3m would pull effortlessly over the gti6, if the drivers were equal in abilities in each car, that's why I don't really buy the "my mate drove this car and he kept up with ...." or similar stories.

I was fishing for the guy I quoted :P

Yeah I mean if they did a back to back scientific test with cars same sort of ages, same driver, set-ups I'd be more inclined to believe it.

Love Z3M's really want one OR the Z4M very quick cars and good handlers iirc quite the drivers choice.

Go for a late xsara vts coupe

Uses the same engine but only a five speed box
Thicker rear torsion bars , interiors nicer and more modern

And you can pick them up cheap

I've always had Saxo's and Clio's. My first 1.2 16v Clio had electrical problems. Never had an electrical problem on any of my cars....But don't own them long enough to experience any lol :P

Just lately gone off the GTI-6 idea. Would love an Civic EK4 though or a 106 Rallye
