View Full Version : New daily drive - Mondeo ST TDCi

Well, I've not posted a progress thread for quite a while, so thought I'd make a quick one for my new daily.

I had a 307 HDi for a few years, which despite rumours, was actually pretty reliable. However, the mileage was getting on a bit and the associated wear and tear and general maintanance items required for it to get through another MOT meant that financially, it wasnt really worth it.

I narrowed down its replacement to an Audi A4 TDi S-line, BMW 320d M-sport or a Mondeo ST TDCi. It had to be low mileage as I plan on keeping it for a few years, so didnt want to be starting on 100k+. The price of BMW and Audi were quite high, whereas the MOndeo was a lot less, for a slightly better level of specification, if not the badge 'prestige'!

I spent a long while looking round for the perfect ST. There were plenty of absolute shitters around, and I missed out on several 'perfect' ones. So when a black '06 plate in 44k miles popped up, I rung straight up and left a deposit. 2 weeks later, it was mine.

Its got the normal ST spec, plus factory upgraded full leather Recaro interior, HID lights and parking sensors, which most ST's dont have. Full service history, 1 private owner and direct from a Ford dealer at a good price. Very happy with it so far.

Only pics I have so far:

Plans are:

to sort the paintwork out, as it looks like the cars lived in a car wash - full of swirls and holograms and feels rough to the touch. A local lad should hopefully be giving it the once over with a rotary to sort it though.
Refurb the wheels as they are corroded (common problem) and kerbed in places. Probably do them in antracite
Lower it a bit - already bought a set of Eibach springs for it
new front mount intercooler, exhaust and a remap which should see a good power increase

Also going to stick a bit of stereo in it, as I still have most of the install I used to have in my old Focus. Will do a stelth install as I need the boot space, but JL Audio sub and amps will be going in, with DB Audio T-rex components in the front, and I have a set of Morel 5x7's on their way to me for the rear doors. Just need a new head unit to run it all, but that probably going to have to wait till after christmas.

Be careful with the six disc changer although they state it's six disk they have a habit of jamming if you put six in!!!

Nice car, shame about the colour has to be the blue!!

One of these was on our short list to replace the family tdci gear, like you we couldn't find a decent one.
So the net was cast wider and we ended up with an Alfa 156 jtdm 2.4 20valve and do far it's proved better than the Mondeo, better fuel economy, more power out the box and very nice to drive

its been good so far. Seats are quite hard compared to teh armchairs in my old pug, but the heating function in a morning is a beauty!
Yeah darker wheels will be much better. Not really a fan of the diamond cut shinyness!

Yeah I looked for a blue one, but they attract a premium on the price, and this one came up with the exact spec and mileage I was after, so coulour wasnt a big issue. Decent ones are hard to come by.

I know the disk changer issue. Mines ok so far :y:

They are ok. Very torquey so its no slouch.. But they are big and heavy so not really a rocket ship.

I'd say they are mildly quick,
My 130 is quick enough for me,
Pulls well even in 6th... Used to hit 130+ with ease when I first got it, it's lost a fair few horses now lol!

Just ride those torque waves lol.

Been collecting a few bits off eBay for the mondeo:

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l234/Kers_01/Mondeo%20ST/IMG_1586.jpg

Got some lowering springs to reduce the nasty looking arch gap. probably get them fitted after christmas now when I get the wheels refurbished.
Also got a set of Morel speakers for the rear doors, and an Alpine I-Phone interface, to match an Alpine headunit thats also on its way. Already have a set of speakers for the front, and a JL Audio sub. The trims are spares so that I can fibreglass some tweeter pods into them.

Just need some sound deadening to stop any rattles, and a hefty amp to run the system. Currently looking at a Vibe 5 channel job to save my boot space.

The car should also be being machine polished this weekend to remove all the the car wash swirls and holograms.

Little pre-christmas present to myself :D

Managed to pick up an Airtec FMIC for the mondeo. Much bigger than the standard intercooler and its reported to give good gains.

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l234/Kers_01/Mondeo%20ST/F20A4772-C475-4AAE-A034-A433FA240DB2-61338-00001227E5C8DEC5.jpg

Looking into getting a set of Forge Motorsport silicone pipes as well before fitting it. After christmas I think I'll be looking into getting a decat pipe and full exhaust, then getting those, the FMIC springs and audio fitted and wheels refurbed. Then It will need a remap to make the most of the new parts. Probably be getting a Bluefin for it with custom map, so that the remap can be removed when it goes to Ford for servicing.

Also, my Alpine headunit arrived last week, although it was broken due to the seller not pckaging it correctly. BUt having a part refund on it via paypal so can order the bits to fix it at no extra cost to myself :D

About 270lb/ft whatever that equates to in new money.

A remap will see near 200bhp and over 400lb/ft

That's without upgrading anything and it's safe as well??

Dunno about safety but it's been done more than once on standard internals. I'm assuming FMICs have been used.

Regardless, if you look at the in gear accelleration, it outperforms the petrol version in almost every test

Andy_K
17th December 2012, 15:15
Your looking at £6-7.5k for a good low mileage version, depending on exact spec. Upper end of that sale get you sat nav, recaro's etc and full dealer history. If your not bothered about mileage, you can pick pre-facelift modles from £4k

They certainly aren't slow. Just don't feel fast due to size and smoothness. But breathing mods and a remap opens them up massively.

Andy_K
17th December 2012, 15:17
And yes fmic upgrade is necessary as standard one is tiny. But they are only £300 at most and direct fit

Bit more shopping done for the pile of stuff ready to fit

Picked up a panel filter and a decat pipe. Went for the panel filter to keep the induction noise Down and reading around it seems an induction kit doesn't do much extra on these.
Also a stainless decat which should free up a bit of torque and power. Going to get these fitted ASAP soon as the snow goes.

Right, well after an extremely busy month at work, I may get to spend a bit of time playing with my cars next weekend. Bonus to busy month is lots of expenses so the mondeo will be getting a few treats.
First up, it's due some new tyres. So whilst that's happening, I'll be having the wheels powder coated in a metallic grey or anthracite. Picking up a spare set of st rims today to have done so I can still use the car daily, and will order tyres off camskill on payday next week.
After that, I'm hoping to get the car booked in at a garage to have the springs swapped for the lowered ones.
Next weekend the plan is to fit the decat and k&n filter. And also to clean out the egr valve to try and cure a slight stutter the car has on light throttle.

Andy_K
24th February 2013, 09:44
Oh and also I was going to paint the front grilles black instead of the grey and chrome they currently are.

Now just need to drop them off at the powder coaters during the week and pick a colour ;)

Andy_K
2nd March 2013, 20:51
So I found this today :'(
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l234/Kers_01/7DF92D68-D214-4884-B3D1-BA9CE1732670-36542-00000AF3A332D3A9_zps19f70f90.jpg

Tyres holding pressure currently but it's not going to last long.
Luckily I had a delivery from Camskill on Friday with 4 new tyres arriving. Only hone for nankangs for now as I'm on a budget, but I've used them previously and they were fine. Only £52 each as well for 225/40/18 so can't moan.
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l234/Kers_01/08CD4486-5EC3-4122-8C86-7930560C1557-36542-00000AF3A8F26858_zpse839aa91.jpg

Anyway, my wheels should by now be in a nice shade of metallic grey. Should be picking them up Monday or Tuesday from the coaters and will then get the tyres fitted and onto the car. Painted the centre caps up today in chrome.
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l234/Kers_01/E198E587-D94C-4274-89D8-896248D2E54A-36542-00000AF3AE4377AB_zps8bc05751.jpg
Once fitted you will only see the bolt heads so Won't be too in your face. Also ordered a new set of decals for on the centre caps.

Andy_K
10th March 2013, 17:34
So I picked up my wheels from the powder coaters this week. CAS coatings have done a great job again and they are now a nice metallic grey. I then dropped them to my tyre place to have 4 new tyres fitted, new valves and all balanced. Refitted the 2 bits of the entre caps and new ford centre badges and back on the car.

No decent pics yet cos its freezing, so these will have to do for now.

Got painted grills on the front of the car today as grill etc was off anyway to change a bulb. Looks better in black IMO than grey. Also new ford badges in black carbon instead of the blue. Also fitted a new jacking point cover as one was missing.

Next up should be my amps arriving so I can make a start on the boot install.

Andy_K
24th June 2013, 19:55
Not updated this in a while....

Few little bits changed on the car such as the egr valve which died. Luckily it was covered on warrantee so didn't cost me anything for ford to sort out. Car runs better than ever now, although it is due a service.

There are a couple of other little things that need sorting via the warrantee, so for now I've decided not to modify the car. I'll just keep all the modifications stockpiled do another couple of months until the warranty runs out in September, then stick them all on together :y:
Keep finding bits for it though, picked up 2 genesis profile amps to run the stereo install, and got a set of Forge silicone intercooler pipes and a full 2.5" Mongoose stainless steel exhaust. Also just got a set of 320mm front disks and calipers off a focus ST225 eBay for cheap :y:

Daft question, but how are your tyres holding up? I keep looking at the ST220 and the only thing putting me off is tyre costs...

Andy_K
25th June 2013, 09:37
Tyres have been fine so far. The Pirelli's that came on the car were obviously part worn, and can't remember how old they were when I got it, but I probably put 10k miles on them before they needed changing.
Got nankang budgets on now and they are wearing fine. Had 5k on them and not worn much at all. And only cost just over £200 for the set if 4 delivered which wasn't bad at all. Tyre prices aren't much worse than any other car really. The 205 55 16 (iirc) on my pug 307 were similarly priced for premium brands.

As long as the tracking/alignment is ok tyre wear shouldn't be too bad.
They are a lot if car for the money. The petrol versions are getting cheap now as well as everyone is put off by the v6

Yep, some hovering around the 2k mark which is why my interested has peaked! But I think the standard tyres, the conti sports or something, are like £130 a pop, and that's pretty expensive. If your tyres are adequate and doing a decent job though, I may be more interested! Think the tyres on my Volvo were £77 a pop and they're doing ok, so I'd be happy enough with up to £80 I reckon. I don't really ever go for premium, just a mid range tyre is fine for me, don't drive hard enough to warrant anything more!

Andy_K
25th June 2013, 10:06
That was my feeling as well. There is a lot of brand snobbery regarding tyres. I priced up oem tyres (Pirelli p rosso) but was getting quote of £400+ for the set. I've used nankangs before and although they aren't a premium brand, they've always been fine for me. They grip ok and wear well. I don't hoon the car round anyway. It's just a steady motorway workhorse really

Update on this.

Exhaust, decat and asbo brakes are all fitted. Brakes started with grooved discs and yellow stuff pads, but the discs caused vibrations and I didn't like it so swapped for standard discs which feel much better. Got braided lines on as well.

Then swapped the chrome door handle or all black off a pov spec car and painted the chrome strips below the windows. Painted the light inserts black as well.

The grey st alloys died courtesy of a pot hole so got some zetec s rims refurbished for winter:

Nice.

I've had 5 Mk3s - 2 1.8s, a 2.2 (TitaniumX) and 2 TDCI 130s.

The last TDCI I had had an Airtec, Forge hoses, decat, lowered and tuning box...went well...maybe nearly as well as the boxes 2.2...but the Airtec was a complete ballache to fit and I've never do another.

For my current one i'll be going with the Racebits intercooler (see ST Drivers forum - they make as much power as the Airtec but smaller/easier to fit and only £150ish). Also got ST225 brakes for mine but still need to refurb some 17s before they can go on...

How's you're aux tensioner...mines rumbling like mad and I'm only on 46k!

Struggle to think of any car I'd replace mine with...it does everything well.

My tensioner needs replacing. Horrible sound on it but I will wait a few weeks.

Had my tensioner done last year at about 50k. Luckily I got a full ford warranty on the car so did it under that along with the egr valve.

I'd the airtec really that bad? I was going to try and tackle mine at the weekend.

I agree they are good cars. Not quite as quick as people make out but they are a good all rounder.

Well you've got to bear in mind I fitted mine to a 03 plate Zetec so didn't have the luxury of the deep ST bumpers therefore had a lot of cutting of the plastics.

From what I've read you won't have that problem BUT the Airtec is a lot wider so if you're fitting it with the Forge hoses you will certainly need to trim one of them by around 10-20mm IIRC (you'll see what I mean). As well as that as the Forge hoses don't bend as easy you may also need to move the metal U bend pipes behind the fog holes outwards by one bolt hole to get clearance.

Its worth the effort though...the Airtec looks awesome and you can run flat out everywhere without the same performance loss the standard IC suffers.

Is you're a Euro 3 or 4?

If its a 3 I'd get the EGR blanked ASAP but regardless get the inlet manifold off an cleaned out...I did my last one at 43k and you wouldn't believe the build up of crap inside that and the EGR...was like a different car when cleaned out!

What is the problem if doing it on a Euro 4?

I believe mine is Euro 4 with it being 06 plate. I think 05 onwards is 4

Not fucked, I have this feeling it's never been cleaned and will be full of shit.

Blanking them off is supposed to make them perform better by all accounts.

Euro 3 is vacuum operated so you can just blank them with no issues.

Euro 4 are electronically operated so blanking them causes the engine light to come (though doesn't affect anything).

They work better with the EGRs blanked as the exhaust gases can't mix with the oily air from the turbo and cause soot build up. Mine is actually Euro 4 and I've blanked it...the engine light is a pain but as long as you check it occasionally with a reader (e.g. F-Super) to make sure theres nothing genuinely wrong its worth the hassle IMO.

Won't it fail MOT like that though?

Won't it fail MOT like that though?

Yes.

But if you reset the light it takes around 30-40 miles to detect its been blanked again which will get you through the MOT, or you could just reset it and remove the blank for the MOT.

You get various blanks ranging from a dummy EGR to a small plate that slides in between the EGR and exhaust return pipe...if you get one of those its just case of loosening the 2 nuts and pulling the plate out...5 minute job to fit/remove.

Hey...I was wondering how you find the ASBOs compared to the standard brakes?

I've got a set waiting to go on once I upgrade to 17s though I'm swaying over doing it still due to needing new tyres, get the wheels coated and buy discs/pads...

I've heard they're a good improvement but its always interesting to hear peoples opinions.

Andy_K
17th April 2014, 06:12
They are much better than standard. The car stops better an they don't fade like the standard brakes. I forgot how good they were until recently when I had a wheel bearing changed. They used to vibrate which must have been due to the bearing on its way out, but now everything's tight again, they're back to their best

u33db
17th April 2014, 06:16
Good to hear!

I'm hoping to get mine on in the next 2 months...cant wait...this is the 3rd set I've bought but always ended up selling the other sets...not this time though!

Looks the muts nuts mate, what power you at now and what's the mpg like on these?

My uncle had a 2.2 tdci a few years back and it was great,he's got titanium x now I think,I haven't had a shot of that one yet.

u33db
17th April 2014, 10:56
I'm getting 49.5mpg out of my 2.0 130 and that'd be around 155/160bhp with a fair bit of booting it around.

2.2 should be around the same mpg but with 180ish bhp once boxed/mapped depending on mods..

Andy_K
17th April 2014, 12:37
I average about 40mpg. Thats mostly short trips around town with a few motorway runs a week. On a long run, it can get up to around 60mpg if you take it steady with cruise control on.
power isn't massively high on they, but the torque is. mines 155 bhp standard. Probably only about 160 bhp now, but the decat made it rev a lot easier and freed up a fair bit of torque.

u33db
17th April 2014, 12:49
Think if you're going the Bluefin route they have a map optimised for an intercooler now which will see close to 200bhp.

Have you see the guy on talkford/stdrivers who running nitrous though his;

Next up is definitely a remap. Thinking of AMD Essex to do it as they seem to have a good reputation and its a custom map rather than a flash map. Will be serviced beforehand though as its due one and to make sure it's all healthy. Front pads and rear arb bushes need doing too. Still needs the install doing but may do that next time I have a week off.

Here's a few more photos from over the summer

Wow!

Car is looking stunning mate! really liking the mods on this, the wheels and the splitter really set it off. im currently looking at getting one of these as an upgrade after the saxo.

Any advice when looking for a decent one? Wheres best to be looking for them? found a few on ebay and autotrader, a lot of car for the money.

Andy_K
18th October 2014, 18:07
Thanks mate.

They carry ain't are a lot of car for the money. Trader and eBay are probably your est bet but there's owners forums on the net and Facebook that have selling page and the other usual places like Gumtree.

Just the usual things to look for really. Rust on the arches and bottom of doors. Injectors can fail at around 80k and clutch/dmf. Egr valves clog up and the hose that connects the egr to the turbo can split. Look for lots of smoke on acceleration and a slight hesitation when going on the accelerator.
Oh and the bumpers can start to sag which is quite easy to fix and front bumpers sit low so often get knocked.

Brettles1986
18th October 2014, 18:15
Looks really smart that.

I have a cracked front bumper like most but not sorting yet.

I have plans for mine after Xmas for front bumper repair, splitter, uprated intercooler, induction kit, decat and remap.

I love mine as it gives good MPG and it's a quick car considering its size.

Andy_K
18th October 2014, 18:19
Exactly. For the money I can't think of anything better to drive or that is better equipped.

Cooler and decat really improve the castle though. Mine revs almost like a petrol car now and it pulls a lot harder. Remap should compliment all the mods nicely.

I've cracked my bumper. The splitter holds it together. Looking for a replacement but they are stupid money. Might have it painted next year.

I don't really want to upgrade the whole system tbh and need to sort the crank pulley before I do anything.

What intercooler as well? I was looking at racebits gen 2.

I've got the Graeme welch one. Can't fault it. Got it off eBay.
Cooler is the airtec one. I got it second hand for same price as a racebits one. Loads of people use the racebits or a universal one.

Yeah I've done the full lot. Larger bore as I knew Id be tuning it. It doesn't make that weird noise when coming off boost as well which is a bonus.

Not sure if they're stainless but the standards made of decent steel anyway.

Update time:

I've swapped all the air hoses for silicone versions, including the induction hose.
Holds boost a bit better now. Cleaned the egr valve out again and then sent the car off to msd in Blackpool for a remap. It pulls a lot stronger through the gears now. Pretty happy with it as it stands.

Finally fixed the pdc system as well. Turns out a sensor had gone down and the control box had fried itself. Ford offered to fix it for £350. £30 and eBay did the job instead.

Car is currently on base model rims for winter. New set of summer tyres coming next payday and a refurb of the rota wheels and they'll be back on.

Also getting quotes to tidy up the bodywork and smooth the front plate recess. And still need to finish off the boot install.

Busy times!
