Basically I am debating whether or not to get an iPad
My laptop keeps overheating and won't come back on for a good 15 minutes
I only used it for;
Youtube
iTunes
Spotify
Catching up on TV programs
E-mails
Browsing the Internet
Would you recommend getting one if I will only be using it for the above? Any help would be appreciated

One word ... Yes!
Having said that there are a lot of Android devices that are cheaper and will do the same job without the price tag. Itunes is going to be an issue there though assuming you have an iphone.

Turn on icloud and use it to manage your backups between iphone and ipad.
No you cant us the ipad to update your iphone, the ipad is just a bigger iphone and has the same limitations.

When i had mine i loved the portability of it. Only things i found annoying were me not able to watch a dvd or load a CD cause obviously it doesn't have a disc drive. Plus the lack of java sometimes hinders the ipad. But like brettles said, there are some other tablets out there that do run java and are cheaper than the ipad. And lastly like your problem i didn't like me no being able to plug my phone or camera into it. . but i got round that by going over to my sisters every now and then to sort that out. .
