Anyone good at maths??

A boy wants a shirt that he's seen in a shop for £97. He does not have any money so he borrows £50 off his mum and £50 off his dad, so he now has £100.

He buys the £97 shirt and gets £3 change.

He gives £1 to his mum and £1 to his dad and keeps £1 for himself.

He now owes £49 to his mum and £49 to his dad.

So £49 + £49 = £98 + £1 (he kept for himself) = £99.

Whats happened to the other £1???

Simples ... he borrowed £100 and has reimbursed £2 therefore still owes £98 - the £1 he kept from the change is still within the £100 he borrowed so doesn't come into the equation.

You have his expenditure
(£50 + £50) - £97 = £3
Total debt is still £100 - he's in credit still.

The debt paid off is £100 - £2 = £98


The pound in his pocket is borrowed money and is a debt not an asset.

Im having a guess and could be way off is it something to do with dividing 97/2 which would = 48.50 which would be to mum and then dad something along them lines.

Yes except he only paid back £2, not the whole amount.
The £1 is still money owed. If he paid this back he would owe £48.50 to each parent.

Its like getting a loan from the bank for £10,000 for a car, and only buying a saxo for £400
You might have £9600 in the bank, but you have £10k of debt.
